1. Resumption of the session

The sitting opened at 17.05.

2. Approval of the minutes of the previous sitting

The minutes of the previous sitting were approved.

3. Announcements by the President

The President welcomed the award of the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize to the Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo. He called on the Chinese authorities to free Liu Xiaobo and other human rights activists, and spoke of Parliament’s commitment to human rights.

The President added that the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty had been celebrated on the previous day. Today, it was the fourth European Anti-Trafficking Day. On Tuesday, Ban Ki-moon, Secretary- General of the United Nations, would be visiting Parliament to commemorate the Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

The President said that he would deliver his mid-term address on Wednesday 20 October 2010 (12.10- 12.30).

Request by the Verts/ALE Group for the vote on Parliament’s calendar of part-sessions – 2012 to be postponed to a subsequent sitting (item 107 of the final draft agenda).

The following spoke: Daniel Cohn-Bendit, on behalf of the Verts/ALE Group, explaining the reasons for the request, and Francesco Enrico Speroni, on behalf of the EFD Group, opposing the request.

Parliament rejected the request by electronic vote (73 in favour, 183 against, 10 abstentions).
