I. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

An organization’s annual report provides an essential purpose – it exists to inform the membership of what goes on both in front of and behind the scenes during each year of operation. It also serves to document important accomplishments, activities, projects, finances, and any substantial changes that have occurred. It is made easily available to the membership as well as to others interested in the organization. It becomes a record by which to review the past and chart the future.

Since the SNAG Board retreat in January 2007, the strategic plan has functioned as a guiding document in the development of our programs and services. It has served to give us direction through many decision-making processes. Additionally, many areas of internal restructuring and improving board service have also been implemented in meeting goals set forth in the plan. Most notable is that we have developed new areas of board oversight that include marketing and fundraising, clarity in board service and expectations in oversight, and improved communication.

Please take time to read through this Annual Report. An informed membership is a strong membership. The board of directors always welcomes your comments and suggestions, and is constantly trying to meet the needs of our membership.

Kris Patzlaff, President

III. TREASURER’S REPORT

The financial information here on pages 8 and 9, provides a picture of SNAG at the end of fiscal year 2008. That year began on very tenuous footing financially for SNAG, because of some older bookkeeping corrections that had to be made at the end of 2007.

At the March 2008 board meeting and conference, the Board of Directors implemented a number of initiatives which included dramatic budget reductions for the entire year and a redoubled focus on both earned income generation and fundraising. Through a combination of all of these changes, and a serious commitment to improving SNAG’s financial picture, SNAG was able to end the year in the black.

For comparison, at the end of 1998, SNAG’s income was $474,941 and expenses were $451,056. The surplus that year was $23,885. A decade later, at the end of 2008, SNAG’s total income from all sources was $890,268, and total expenses had grown to $820,506. The surplus in 2008 was $77,501, which helped offset significant losses from the previous fiscal year 2007.

You will see from the 2008 pie charts that SNAG spent 72.8% of the budget on its programming. The remaining 27.2% was divided between management and administrative (16.6%), office/travel/board (8.8%), and miscellaneous expenses (1.8%). In comparing these charts with those from 1998, we found that ten years ago SNAG was spending roughly 72% on our programming and 28% on its other expenses. In other words, the organization has grown proportionately.

TIME STUDY

The SNAG staff is two years into a three-year Time Study, tracking how much time each person spends working on each program, and how much of their time is spent on purely administrative matters. Then going forward they will continue to conduct an annual Time Study.

With data about how much staff time each program takes, future budgets and financial tracking will be able to convey a far more concrete and realistic picture of how much SNAG’s programming actually costs, separate from organization-wide administrative costs.

9 IV. CONFERENCES

The Savannah conference, hosted by the Savannah College of Art & Design (Lanelle Keyes and Bonnie Kubasta), was held in early March and drew 750 attendees. The conference theme, “Crosscurrents: Diverse Solutions in a Global Environment,” featured an eclectic slate of presenters and exhibitions.

Rio Grande again was the official corporate sponsor of our annual conference in 2008, and we thank them for their investment in SNAG. We enjoyed the support of many other sponsors, all of which is truly invaluable to the success of these events

The august list of event sponsors of the Savannah conference were: Savannah College of Art & Design, Otto Frei Co., Bill Gangi, Charon Kransen Arts, Myron Toback, United Precious Metal Refining, Facere Jewelry Art Gallery, Tim Roark, E.B. Fitler, Aaron Faber Gallery, King’s Ransom, Susan Cummins, Komelia Hongja Okim, Leonard Urso, KerrLab, Metalliferous, and Mobilia Gallery.

The always well-attended pre-conference Professional Development Seminar enjoyed its sixth successful four-hour session. The theme for the afternoon connected to the conference theme with “Crosscurrents: Navigating Towards New Markets,” and featured Bobby Hansson, Marthe Le Van, Megan Augman, Amy Tavern, Ivan Barnett and Heidi Lowe. The Professional Development Seminar was sponsored by MJSA and Otto Frei.

The coordinators of the 2008 Education Dialogue, Courtney Starrett, Rebecca Strzelec and Donna Sweigart, brought new enthusiasm to the content and attendance at this annual session for educators. They also convinced the Board that the Education Dialogue should be better incorporated into the conference program starting with the 2009 conference, and it should be provided its own line item in the budget, as of the 2010 conference.

We have commitments in hand to host conferences through 2014:

• Philadelphia in 2009 • Houston in 2010 • in 2011 • Washington, D.C. 2012 • Toronto, Canada 2013 • Phoenix 2014

V. SNAG PUBLICATIONS

Metalsmith

The world-renown designer, Luke Hayman of the Pentagram design firm, spent all of 2008 redesigning everything about Metalsmith, in anticipation of a relaunch in January 2009. The specially constituted Design Review Committee was comprised of Sharon Church, Anya Kivarkis, Rachelle Thiewes, editor Suzanne Ramljak, and board liaison Sandie Zilker. They presented the final design to the Board at the fall meeting in Philadelphia, and the Board was very pleased with the outcome.

The Exhibition in Print in 2008 was the fairly esoteric, “Equilibrium: Body as Site” guest curated by Kate Bonansinga, and Rachelle Thiewes. It featured the work of twenty artists in the field, and its content generated quite a bit of discussion.

The composition of the Editorial Advisory Committee in 2008 was Sharon Church (chair), Kim Cridler, Ursula Ilse Neuman, Mija Riedel, Suzanne Ramljak, and board liaison Sandra Zilker. The EAC held its annual meeting in conjunction with the Savannah conference to save money in the budget.

SNAG News

The newsletter was transformed into an all-digital publication as of the April 2008 issue. It is now distributed solely through the SNAG website, with an announcement sent to every member’s email address as soon as it has been uploaded onto the site.

This is a significant change, many years in coming, which enables SNAG to fulfill a number of longstanding goals: to become all four-color, publish many more images, and get out from under all practical limitations and costs of print production, mailing and postage. Changing to an online publication is environmentally friendly and financially prudent. Each issue now contains substantially more information, more timely information, and better delivery than ever before.

In January 2008, James Bove became the Technical Editor of SNAG News. In the five issues that year, he secured terrific articles on casting; machine polishing and buffing; the Flex-I-Shaft Unit; alternative techniques in enamel; and working with bronze clay, submitted from a range of artists in the field.

Member Directory

The Directory also is now available only through SNAG’s website, in two different versions: one available only to other members and another one for the public. Members can easily update their own information online, and information received in the SNAG office is updated weekly. This new approach means the contact information contained in the directory never goes out of date.

VI. OUTREACH

SNAG sponsors lectures at all SOFA shows, coordinated by Donald Friedlich. In 2008 the SNAG lecture at SOFA/NY was enamellist and educator, Jamie Bennett, coinciding with the first-ever retrospective of Bennett’s work, “Edge of the Sublime.” The SNAG lectures at SOFA/ this year were the renowned German master goldsmith Michael Zobel, and the Australian metalsmith and jeweler Simon Cottrell. In addition SNAG sponsored its usual lecture, “Emerging Talent,” this time showcasing the of rising stars Daniel DiCaprio, Caroline Gore, and Sharon Massey.

VII. NOMINATIONS AND ELECTIONS

Claire Sanford was the Chair of the Nominations and Elections Committee (NEC). Members voted for the president-elect, two Board members and one member of the NEC. Harlan Butt became president-elect, Nanz Aalund and Anne Mondro earned Board seats, and Bryan Park began serving on the NEC. Evan Larson resigned from the board, and was replaced by Marlene Richey to serve the rest of his term.

VIII. LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

In March 2008, during the conference in Savannah, Heikki Seppä became the most recent recipient of SNAG’s award, for a lifetime of exceptional service and achievement in the jewelry and metal arts field. Member Sean Gilson accepted the award on Seppä’s behalf. Beyond Seppä’s contributions to the metalsmithing discipline and education, he was instrumental in the early development of SNAG as a founding member in 1969. Heikki Seppä is also as a Fellow of the American Crafts Council and a recipient of the Hans Christiansen Lifetime Achievement Award by the Society of American Silversmiths.

The Award itself is the work of metalsmith Cynthia Eid, who won a design competition sponsored by SNAG. Her design is a stunning sterling silver vessel on a black marble base.

By ballot the membership voted to change the Lifetime Achievement Award provisions in the Constitution and ByLaws, to expand the reach and accolades of the Award beyond the traditional conference focus. Henceforth SNAG will dedicate its annual conference to the recipient of the Award with a brief ceremony. After the conference the recipient will then be published in Metalsmith and there will be a full-length illustrated presentation published on the SNAG website.

X. FUNDRAISING HIGHLIGHTS

SNAG received a $30,000 check for general operating expenses from the Windgate Charitable Foundation. SNAG also received a $5,000 grant from The Rotasa Foundation to help underwrite certain aspects of the redesign and relaunch of Metalsmith.

The Conference Student Scholarships collected $10,710, with Jewelers Mutual donating $5,000, Todd Reed committing to $3,000, and the following thirteen SNAG members collectively donating another $2,710: Jane Bohan, Petra Class, Peggy Eng, Karen Lorene of Facere Jewelry Art Gallery, Michael Good, Barbara Heinrich Studio, Marne Ryan Designs, Gabriel Oflesh, Amy Roper Designs, George Sawyer, 3rd Ward Jewelry, Trisko’s Jewelry Sculptures, and Z Folio Gallery.

With this $10,710 SNAG was able to underwrite the Savannah conference registration fees for 43 students, each chosen by the heads of their respective jewelry/metals departments.

Fifty-seven SNAG members donated $1,500 to the Support Students fundraising campaign. This helps to defray the many thousands of dollars incurred by SNAG to discount all student conference registrations well below the actual cost of each person attending.

President Kris Patzlaff wrote a strong appeal letter sent out April 30 to all members, and she wrote a follow up appeal letter we sent out on May 30. The response from the membership to these two appeals was very strong. We received nearly $28,000 in unrestricted individual donations from 340 members. The average donation we received was between $75 and $80. As is normal, throughout 2008 we also received general unrestricted donations from members and subscribers who add contributions to their renewal payments.

We took a different approach to our large annual appeal this year, focusing on SNAG’s 40th Anniversary in 2009, naming the appeal the “Donation of Celebration.” We received $8,675 from 148 donors.

XI. EDUCATIONAL ENDOWMENT

The SNAG Educational Endowment was at $55,915 as of December 31, 2008. In 2008, the jurors awarded three $1,000 Endowment scholarship recipients to:

• Eun Yeong Jeong, Graduate student at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign • Soyeon Kim, Graduate student at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign • Robert Longyear, Graduate student at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville

And the jurors awarded one Honorable Mention to Gemma Draper, Graduate student at Cranbrook Academy of Art
