New island record On 6 October 1995, Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife employee C. Joao submitted an unusual plant he found while work- ing in the Molokai Forest Reserve. The plant was identified as U. europaeus and con- firmed by a Hawaii Department of Agriculture (HDOA) nox-A survey of the site on 9 October revealed an infestation of ca. 19 m2 at about 457 m elevation in the Kamiloa Distr., ca. 6.2 km above Kamehameha Highway. Distribution in Wagner et al. (1990, Manual of the flowering plants of Hawai‘i, p. 716) listed as Maui and Hawaii. Material examined: MOLOKAI: Molokai Forest Reserve, 4 Dec 1995, Guy Nagai s.n. Our understanding of the population ecology of insect gallers is largely built on examples from temperate zones, but tropical and subtropical gallers may present distinct patterns of abundance and distribution across time. Eugeniamyia dispar Maia, Mendonça & Romanowski, 1996 is a multivoltine Neotropical cecidomyiid that induces spongy leaf galls on Eugenia uniflora(Myrtaceae). Galls were censused in the urban area of Porto Alegre, southern Brazil on six plants at two sites, for two years, at roughly weekly intervals. Overall 9,694 eggs, galling attempts and galls were counted. New galls continuously appear on developing leaves, but galls with live inducers are absent from June to at least early August. Galls on a same shoot develop synchronically, thus the shoot is probably the unit for oviposition. Given the also synchronic appearance of galls on different plants on a site, it seems midges can disperse and attack close-by plants. Gall cohorts varied in abundance by two orders of magnitude; there were more galls during summer than for spring and autumn, in a wave-like pattern. -

The changes in larval density of the pine caterpillar population were estimated by the fecal-pellets counting method and by the direct counting method at a pine stand in a nursery. The food consumption, assimilation, respiration and growth were also mea- sured in the laboratory. The total food consumption, assimilation, respiration and growth of the population were calculated utilizing the individual values and population density. An individual larva consumed about 14.0g of pine needles over one growing season. From which 11.2g was defecated as feces, and the rest 2.8g was assimilated. 2.3g, or eighty per cent of the assimilated matter was used for respiration and 0.5g was used for growth of larval body weight. Larval density was estimated at about 63 individuals per square meter in September 1967, which decreased to about 6 individuals per square meter in July 1968 (at the time of pupation). -

Managing insect contaminants in processed leafy vegetables: A best practice guide Introduction Insects are potential contaminants of processed leafy vegetables. Pest and beneficial species, in both the juvenile and adult stages of their life cycles can become unwanted contaminants if they make their way from the field into the final packaged product and to the end consumer. This best practice guide summarises the key findings of a project conducted by Applied Horticultural Research and Harvest Fresh Cuts. The focus of this project was to find ways to control contaminants and assess their impact in processed leafy vegetable products. To determine which insect groups were of most relevance, and how to reduce insect contamination of packaged produce, the project started at the customer level and Figure 1. 2017 Report on the Haleakalā High Altitude Observatory Site
Haleakalā High Altitude Observatory Site Management Plan 2017 Annual Report Introduction to Management of the Haleakalā High Altitude Observatory Site The Haleakalā High Altitude Observatory Site (HO) Management Plan (MP) was approved by the Board of Land and Natural Resources (BLNR) on December 1, 2010. Condition #2 states: “Beginning in November 2012 the University will submit to DLNR an annual report summarizing any construction activities occurring at HO; Habitat Conservation Plans; Monitoring Plans for Invertebrates, Flora, and Fauna; Programmatic Agreements on Cultural Resources; Invasive Species Control Plans and other related plans, The Report should be brief but thorough. This report should also be presented to the Board of Land and Natural Resources for the first year, and every five years thereafter.” Therefore, this report summarizes activities that occurred under the MP from December 1, 2016 to November 30, 2017. The land use described in this report, on activities under the HO MP, qualifies as an identified use in the General Subzone and is consistent with the objectives of the General Subzone of the land. The objectives of the General Subzone (HAR 13-5-14) are to designate open space where specific conservation uses may not be defined, but where urban uses would be premature. The land use is consistent with astronomical research facilities for advanced studies of astronomy and atmospheric sciences. HO is located within a General Subzone of the State of Hawai’i Conservation District that has been set aside for observatory site purposes only. Identified applicable land uses in the General Subzone, include R-3 Astronomy Facilities and (D-1) Astronomy facilities under an approved management plan (HAR 13-5-25). -

Plangia graminea (Serville) (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) is considered a minor sporadic pest in vineyards of the Western Cape Province, South Africa, and was the focus of this study. In the past few seasons (since 2012) P. graminea appeared to have caused a substantial amount of damage leading to great concern among the wine farmers of the Western Cape Province. Very little was known about the biology and ecology of this species, and no monitoring method was available for this pest. The overall aim of the present study was, therefore, to investigate the biology and ecology of P. graminea in vineyards of the Western Cape to contribute knowledge towards the formulation of a sustainable integrated pest management program, as well as to establish an appropriate monitoring system. -
Inventory and Review of Quantitative Models for Spread of Plant Pests for Use in Pest Risk Assessment for the EU Territory1
EFSA supporting publication 2015:EN-795 EXTERNAL SCIENTIFIC REPORT Inventory and review of quantitative models for spread of plant pests for use in pest risk assessment for the EU territory1 NERC Centre for Ecology and Hydrology 2 Maclean Building, Benson Lane, Crowmarsh Gifford, Wallingford, OX10 8BB, UK ABSTRACT This report considers the prospects for increasing the use of quantitative models for plant pest spread and dispersal in EFSA Plant Health risk assessments. The agreed major aims were to provide an overview of current modelling approaches and their strengths and weaknesses for risk assessment, and to develop and test a system for risk assessors to select appropriate models for application. First, we conducted an extensive literature review, based on protocols developed for systematic reviews. The review located 468 models for plant pest spread and dispersal and these were entered into a searchable and secure Electronic Model Inventory database. A cluster analysis on how these models were formulated allowed us to identify eight distinct major modelling strategies that were differentiated by the types of pests they were used for and the ways in which they were parameterised and analysed. These strategies varied in their strengths and weaknesses, meaning that no single approach was the most useful for all elements of risk assessment. Therefore we developed a Decision Support Scheme (DSS) to guide model selection. The DSS identifies the most appropriate strategies by weighing up the goals of risk assessment and constraints imposed by lack of data or expertise. Searching and filtering the Electronic Model Inventory then allows the assessor to locate specific models within those strategies that can be applied. -

Cladistic analyses of morphological and host use characters have produced several phylogenetic hypotheses for the genus. Only monophyly of the subgenera Pardalaspis and Ceratitis (sensu stricto) and polyphyly of the subgenus Ceratalaspis are common to all of these phylogenies. In this study, the hypotheses developed from morphological and host use characters are tested using gene trees pro- duced from DNA sequence data of two mitochondrial genes (cytochrome oxidase I and NADH-dehydrogenase subunit 6) and a nuclear gene (period). Comparison of gene trees indicates the following relationships: the subgenus Pardalaspis is monophyletic, subsection A of the subgenus Pterandrus is monophyletic, the subgenus Pterandrus may be either paraphyletic or polyphyletic, the subgenus Ceratalaspis is polyphyletic, and the subgenus Ceratitis s. s. might not be monophyletic. In addition, the genera Ceratitis and Trirhithrum do not form reciprocally monophyletic clades in the gene trees. Although the data statistically reject monophyly for Trirhithrum under the Shimoda- ira–Hasegawa test, they do not reject monophyly of Ceratitis. 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
