PRESENTATION OF THE 10TH EDITION

2013 residents with Olivier Ducastel, Claude-Éric Poiroux, 2012 residents with Raphaël Nadjari, Olivier Ducastel, Arnaud Gourmelen and Thibaut Bracq Claude-Éric Poiroux and Yves-Gérard Branger CREATED IN 2005, THE ANGERS WORKSHOPS are directed toward young European filmmakers with one or two short films to their credit and a first feature film in the works. During 5 days, they will be taught by recognized professionals from the world of cinema. This year, the focus will be on production, directing and . The residents are invited to come back in Angers in January 2015 during the 27th edition of the Festival. This new appointment will give them the opportunity to work on the development of their project. They will meet professionals about financial support and production. They also will have the opportunity to participate on the screenings and events of the Festival.

The Workshops will offer them:

. Screenings and analyses of film from the past and present.

. Training with established filmmakers and technicians who will bring to the classroom their professional experience and methods.

. Development of their personal projects under the guidance of the attending instructors, with emphasis on specific questions concerning directing, working with actors, production...

THE 10TH EDITION OF THE ANGERS WORKSHOPS will welcome 8 young European directors from 5 European countries: Guillaume André ( / Estonia), Siamak Etemadi (Greece), Julien Guetta (France), Janno Jürgens (Estonia), Mirjam Kubescha (Germany), Juho Kuosmanen (Finland), Nora Martirosyan (France) and Morgan Simon (France).

The director Delphine Gleize (Carnages, L’Homme qui rêvait d’un enfant, Cavaliers seuls) will run the workshops, accompanied by professionals from the world of film, including the directors Céline Sciamma (Tomboy, Bande de filles), Lionel Baier (Un autre homme, Les Grandes Ondes (à l’ouest)) and Jaime Rosales (La Soledad, Beautiful Youth), the producers Marta Donzelli (Le Quattro Volte by Michelangelo Frammartino, A Street in Palermo by Emma Dante) and Luis Urbano (Redemption and Tabou by Miguel Gomes, Gebo and the Shadow by Manoel de Oliveira) and the film editor François Quiqueré (Cavaliers seuls by Delphine Gleize and Jean Rochefort, La Permission de minuit by Delphine Gleize).

In parallel, Premiers Plans will also have an initiation and training program for professionals or future professionals, teachers, film students or film lovers.

2014 RESIDENTS

The 10th edition of the Angers Workshops will welcome 8 young European directors from 5 European countries: Estonia, Finland, France, Germany and Greece.

FRANCE / ESTONIA GUILLAUME ANDRÉ PROJECT : SAAREMAA

After two years in Warsaw working for the French Film Festival and presenting a radio program, Guillaume André enrolled in La fémis to study screenwriting. He then worked for a theater company and collaborated on various feature film screenplays. He directed Bleu #11, about the documenta XI – Kassel and Le Moindre Souffle (selected in different festival in France and abroad, including the Angers First Film Festival in 2006 and awarded with the Innovation Award at Festival du Film Court de Villeurbanne) and Une autre voix, selected in FIDMarseille in 2010. He is currently working on his first feature film, Saaremaa, in collaboration with Anne-Louise Trividic and Johanne Bernard. He is also co-writing, with Jean-Claude Carrière, a feature film, L’Enfant hébreu and Tous les rêves du monde by Laurence Ferreira Barbosa.

SYNOPSIS Since the accidental death of his boyfriend two years ago, for which he feels responsible, Sacha forbids himself unconsciously to be engaged in new relationships. His internal struggle changes his perception of the realities and is accompanied by physical transformations. An extremely sensorial experience in a foreign environment will allow Sacha to birth again and to take back his life in his own hand.

GREECE SIAMAK ETEMADI PROJECT : PARI

Siamak Etemadi was born in Teheran, Iran. In 1995, he moved to Athens, Greece, where he lives to this day. He studied cinema in the UK and in Greece. He directed his first short film Vignette in 2001 as a student project and his second short film Paramithas in 2003 for the Greek national TV. Both films took part in Greek and international film festivals. His last short film Cavo d’Oro had its world premiere in Locarno International Film Festival - Competition in 2012 and was nominated for the Best Short Film in the Greek Film Academy Awards.

SYNOPSIS When Babak, an Iranian student in Greece, doesn’t show up to welcome his parents at the Athens international airport, her mother, Pari, is forced to go on a quest that will take her much further than a mother’s search for a missing son.

FRANCE JULIEN GUETTA PROJECT : UNE HISTOIRE DE FAMILLE

Graduated from the EICAR and La fémis (screenwriting department), Julien Guetta made several short films (Le Vacant in 2007 and Les Ventres vides in 2010), selected and awarded in festivals (Brest, Clermont-Ferrand, Palm Spring…). He is currently developing several feature film projects as screenwriter, particularly with Laurence Ferreira Barbosa and Dominique Baumard. He will film in autumn 2014 his next short film Lana del Roy and he is currently working on the writing and the development of his first feature film Une histoire de famille, produced by Les Films du Worso.

SYNOPSIS Nelly wishes a child, Alex prefers his pilot career. They break up. Ten years later, Alex became breakdown mechanic. One night, he sleeps with one of his customers, who disappears the next morning, leaving her two children with him. The social assistant, who helps him, is Nelly. Is it the opportunity for Alex to finally take his responsibilities?

ESTONIA JANNO JÜRGENS PROJECT : RAIN

Born in Haapsalu, Estonia, Janno Jurgens made different experiments in short film genre since 2006. He graduated from the Baltic Film and Media School with a bachelor’s degree in 2012 as a film director. In 2013, he presented in Angers his short film Distants.

SYNOPSIS In a small Nordic country, in a little seaside town, in a block of flats live father Kalju, mother Aino and 12-year-old Ats. The father is domineering and the mother tries to guide him in her quite manner. The fragile balance is destroyed when their son Rain breaks up with his girlfriend and returns to parents’ home. Ats sees how years older brother Rain constantly fails and wishes to avoid same mistakes. Rain tries to do everything differently than his father and gets his life back on track, while father Kalju has hard time accepting that his sons are such losers.

GERMANY MIRJAM KUBESCHA PROJECT : HEADING NORTH

Born in Germany, Mirjam Kubescha graduated from the Cinema department of the Sorbonne Nouvelle in and the Munich Academy for Television & Film (HFF). She directed several short and medium-length films selected in different festivals, including the Cinefondation, the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes and the Premiers Plans Festival in 2002 (Ecce Homo). Her feature docu-fiction Balordi won the Best documentary award at the Torino Film Festival and the Audience Award in Viennale, Vienne international Film Festival. In all her productions, Mirjam Kubescha was the scriptwriter, producer, director and editor.

SYNOPSIS Paolo, a Sicilian ghetto-kid, Fadel, an illegal Tunisian immigrant and Anna, a German upper-class girl, head to Paris in order to pursue their dreams, but struggle with the harsh reality they are confronted with. Still they don’t give up and form an utopian love triangle.

FINLAND JUHO KUOSMANEN PROJECT : THE HAPPIEST DAY IN THE LIFE OF OLLI MÄKI

Juho Kuosmanen studied directing at the Department of film of the Aalto University in Helsinki. He is also an for the cinema and television. His films have been awarded in several festivals. His three first short films have been selected and awarded in the Premiers Plans Festival: Kaupunkilaisia (2009), Roadmarkers (2009) and The Painting Sellers (2011).

SYNOPSIS Helsinki, 1962. Olli Mäki, a boxer, embodies the Finnish hope in the less than 60 kg category. He is going to face the American world champion Davey Moore. It’s the match of his life… but he is thinking about Raija…

FRANCE NORA MARTIROSYAN PROJECT : TERRITORIA

Born in Armenia, Nora Martirosyan graduated in 1996 from the Yerevan Academy of Fine Arts and in 2001 from the academy of Amsterdam (Gerriet Rietvel Academie). She then attended two artist-in-residence programmes: at the Fresnoy and at the Rijkakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. Her films Courant d’air (2003), 1937 (2007) and Les Complices (2009) have been presented in several festivals (Cinematexas, FID Marseille, Belfort…). In 2012, she created the film production company heolfilms, together with the directors Pierre-Yves Cruaud and Laurent Aït Benalla. She is laureate of the Villa Medicis in 2013.

SYNOPSIS Alain is waiting at the new airport of the self-proclaimed and unrecognized republic High-Karagabh. His job will allow the airport to be working normally and to the local population to assert its existence and to be connected to the world. During his journey, he has to give to Manu, a young girl, an envelope with money to buy a plane ticket to leave the airport. But days are going by and the arrival of the plane is postponed from one week to the next.

FRANCE MORGAN SIMON PROJECT : COMPTE TES BLESSURES

Born in the suburbs of Paris, Morgan Simon studied biology and followed lectures at the School of Fine Arts in Paris, before joining La fémis in the scriptwriting department. During three years, he works as a critic for a webzine specialized in Alternative Rock Music. His films deal with the question of marginality and intimacy, like Essaie de mourir jeune or American Football, selected and awarded in 2013 at the Premiers Plans Festival.

SYNOPSIS Vincent is not yet in the first third of his life, that the half of his body is already tattooed and his voice deeper with his post-hardcore group. Since the death of his mother, he spends his life between Bastille and Porte de Clignancourt, between a job as a piercer,

FOUNDER OF THE WORKSHOPS

Jeanne MOREAU | Actress, director

After a theatrical career at the Comédie Française and Théâtre National Populaire, appeared on screen in the 1950s in films such as Hands Off the Loot (1953) by Jacques Becker, before being discovered in Lift to the Scaffold (1956) and The Lovers (1958) by Louis Malle. Her performance in Peter Brook’s Moderato Cantabile (1960), for which she received an award at the , made her famous worldwide, while the song Le Tourbillon sung by the character of Catherine in Truffaut’s Jules and Jim (1961) revealed her as a singer. In 1964, she collaborated again with composer Cyrus Bassiak and recorded the album Peau de banane, which went on to win the Charles Cros Grand Prize. She was Truffaut and Welles’ favourite actress (The Trial in 1962, Falstaff in 1965), but also worked with Demy, Buñuel, Renoir, Losey, Antonioni, Duras and Kazan.

In the 1970s, she met with a new generation of directors, like Blier, Téchiné, Wenders, Angelopoulos and Fassbinder. She then directed two critically acclaimed feature films, Lumiere (1975) and The Adolescent (1979) with in the leading role. Her career has regularly been celebrated with awards at festivals (the Golden Lion in Venice in 1992, a tribute at the Los Angeles Film Festival in 1998, a Donostia in San Sebastian in 1998, and the Golden Bear in Berlin in 2000).

She received the Molière award for her onstage performance in La Servante Zerline (1988) and in 1992 won the Cesar award for best actress in The Old Lady Who Wades in the Sea by Laurent Heynemann. She moves easily from the large to the small screen, particularly for Josée Dayan, with whom she has often worked (Les Parents terribles, Les Rois maudits and Sous les vents de Neptune in 2007).

She has continued working with young directors (Edouard Baer, Akoibon) as well as experienced directors such as François Ozon (Le Temps qui reste, 2005), Theo Angelopoulos (Trois minutes, fragment of Chacun son cinéma, presented in Cannes for the 60th anniversary of the festival) and recently Amos Gitaï (Désengagement and Plus tard) and Tsai Ming-Liang (Visage, 2009). In 2008 she played alongside Sami Frey in Heiner Müller’s Quartett at the Théâtre de la Madelaine. In July 2009 she acted in Amos Gitaï’s La Guerre des fils de lumière contre les fils des ténèbres in Avignon and in Istanbul.

In 2010, Jeanne Moreau and Etienne Daho recorded Le Condamné à mort by Jean Genet and performed it at the Théâtre de l’Odéon, before taking it on an international tour. Once again she worked with Josée Dayan for the TV Bouquet Final.

In 2012, Jeanne Moreau was in two feature films released in France: A Lady in Paris by Ilmar Raag and Gebo and the Shadow by Manoel de Oliveira. She finished in 2013 the last movie of Sandrine Veysset. In January 2013 in Angers, she read, for France Culture, in public the feature film script Evita by Pablo Agüero.

Delphine Gleize | Director | France

Graduated from La fémis, Delphine Gleize won the César for Best Short in 2000 for her first work, made in 1998, Sale Battars (Dirtie Basterds). A Cannes regular, in 1999, she presented her short Un château en Espagne (A Castle in Spain) at the Directors’ Fortnight, Les Méduses (Medusa) at Critics’ Week in 2000, before presenting her first feature Carnages in in 2002. With L’Homme qui rêvait d’un enfant (2007), she returned to a theme that she had already explored in her previous film, the place of children in relation to adults. That same year, Jean Rochefort suggested that she should make Cavaliers seuls with him. The film received its premiere at Premiers Plans in 2008. She then went on to make La Permission de minuit (Moon Child), which looks at the friendship between a doctor () and a teenager suffering from a rare genetic disease. She is currently preparing a comedy, Lily of the Valley. Delphine Gleize has been one of the speakers with Jeanne Moreau at the Angers Workshops in 2011.

Céline Sciamma | Screenwriter, director | France

After a formation in screenwriting in La fémis, Céline Sciamma makes, in 2006, Naissance des pieuvres, her graduation screenplay. Acclaimed by the professionals, the movie is presented in Cannes in 2007 in the section Un Certain Regard and won the Prix Louis Delluc for the Best First Feature Film. She is also nominated in 2008 for the César Award for the Best First Film. In 2010, she makes Tomboy, which was the Opening film of the Panorama in the Berlinale, also acclaimed by the professionals and the public. Her third feature film, Bande de filles, was the Opening film of the Directors’ Fortnight this year in Cannes.

Marta Donzelli | Producer | Italy

Marta Donzelli was born in Turin in 1975. After a graduate degree, she finished her PhD in Philosophy in 2004, with a thesis on Edmund Husserl. The same year, with Gregorio Paonessa, she established Vivo film, an independent production company for art-house films. Vivo film’s productions have been selected by some of the most prestigious international film festivals. In 2007, Imatra by Corso Salani, was awarded a Pardo d’Oro, Special Jury Prize of “Cineasti del Presente”. In 2010 Le Quattro Volte by Michelangelo Frammartino, was premiered in Cannes Director’s Fortnight Section and won the Europa Cinema Label Award. In 2011 she was Italy’s “Producer on the Move” at Cannes Film Festival; together with Gregorio Paonessa. For Le Quattro Volte, she was awarded the “Ciak d’Oro” as Best Producer and was nominated as Best Producer for the David di Donatello Awards. Her last credits as a producer include Via Castellana Bandiera by Emma Dante presented in competition at the 70th Venice Film Festival, (awarded with the Coppa Volpi for the Best Actress) and in the Angers First Film Festival in 2014 and Wolf by Claudio Giovannesi awarded the Jury Award at Torino Film Festival Italiana Doc Competition in November 2013. With Vivo film she is currently committed – among others - in the postproduction of Sworn Virgin the first feature film by Laura Bispuri, selected last year by the Angers Workshop, and in the preparation of Michelangelo Frammartino’s next long feature project Tarda primavera.

Lionel Baier | Director, screenwriter | Switzerland

Lionel Baier was born into a Polish-Swiss family in Lausanne. Starting in 1992, he was programmer at the Cinéma Rex in Aubonne. He then went to study at the humanities faculty of the University of Lausanne. Following his first short, Mignon à croquer, he went on to make Celui au pasteur (ma vision personnelle des choses) and then La Parade (notre histoire). He then went into fiction, making Garçon Stupide (Stupid Boy) in 2004, then Comme des voleurs (à l'est) (Stealth) in 2006 which was released in a number of countries, including the United States. His third fiction feature, Un autre homme (Another Man), was at the Locarno Festival in 2008. Since 2002, Lionel Baier has been the director of the cinema department of the école cantonale d’art de Lausanne (ECAL), and in 2009 he founded Bande à part Films with the filmmakers Ursula Meier, Frédéric Mermoud, Jean- Stéphane Bron and producers Ruth Waldburger and Robert Boner. He was in the feature film jury in 2013 at the Premiers Plans Festival. He attended the Angers Workshops in 2013, where he presented Les Grandes Ondes (à l’ouest).

Jaime Rosales | Director, screenwriter, producer | Spain

After receiving a degree in Business Economics from ESADE, his devotion to film was fostered when he won a scholarship in 1996 to study film at the prestigious International Film and Television School in San Antonio de los Baños (EICTV) in Havana and then at the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) in Sydney. Since 2000 he has developed all his projects as a director with his production company Fresdeval Films. His films are about our inability to communicate with each other, the complexity of the family universe and violence that bursts unexpectedly into everyday life. A tireless explorer of the possibilities audiojvisual media may offer, Jaime Rosales’ films reflect their director’s great interest in finding new expressive forms far from the habitual conventions of cinematographic language.

François Quiqueré | Film editor | France

François Quiqueré is a film editor. He worked with Delphine Gleize, from her first short film Sale Battars in 1998 until her last feature film, La Permission de minuit, released in 2011. He worked in 2008 on the Turkish movie Milk by Semih Kaplanoglu, also with Serge Bozon (La France, Tip Top), Sarah Léonor (Au voleur, Le Grand Homme) or Gérarld Hustache- Mathieu (Avril). In 2013, he worked with Axelle Ropert on her movie Tirez la langue Mademoiselle.

Luis Urbano | Producer | Portugal

Luis Urbano was born in 1968 in Águeda. He graduated in Economics at the Universidade Técnica de Lisboa (1994). In 2005, he joined Sandro Aguilar in the production company “O Som et a Fúria”. Since then he has produced several short and feature films by Miguel Gomes (Tabu, This Dear Month of August, Redemption), Sandro Aguilar (A Zona / Uprise), (João Nicolau (Gambozinos, The Sword and the Rose) and Manoel de Oliveira (Gebo and the Shadow).

Sex, love and obsession are thrown sharply into focus in this darkly sinister film. The so- called stupid boy of the title, Loic is a confused yet sexually liberated young man who divides his time between working in a factory and engaging in random, often paid, sexual encounters with an assortment of men he meets on the internet. However, a developing obsession with his best friend Marie, a non-sexual relationship with the enigmatic Lionel and a lust for a famous footballer whose star is falling, all conspire to drive Loic to the very edge of sanity.

Two urban destinies: Adela leaves behind the mountains and the country life to move to Madrid with her one-year-old baby. She gets a job and builds new friendships. While traveling by bus, she is one of the victims of a terrorist attack, leaving her life in tatters. Antonia has a small neighbourhood supermarket. She leads a fairly quiet life with her boyfriend and her three daughters. However, little by little, Antonia's pleasant life begins to crumble when her oldest daughter asks her for money to buy an apartment on the beach.

On the 21st of January 1975, in a Portuguese village, a child writes to his parents in Angola to tell us how sad Portugal is. On the 13rd of July 2011, in Milan, an old man remembers his first love. On the 6th of May 2012, in Paris, a man says to his girl, he will never be really a father. During her wedding ceremony on the 3rd of September 1977 in Leipzig, the bride tries to get a Wagner Opera out of her mind. But where and when did these four people begin their quest of redemption?

A beautiful combination of an old man's struggle to continue his goathearding life; the birth of a baby goats; a tree which becomes charcoal; and the lives of the simple people in the hills of Calabria. We see the stages of life through beautiful imagery at times dramatic and at times comical.

It’s the story of its journey.

Between his friends and the family business, Arnaud's summer looks set to be a peaceful one. Peaceful until he runs into Madeleine, as beautiful as she is brusque, a concrete block of tensed muscles and doomsday prophecies. He expects nothing; she prepares for the worst. He takes things as they come, likes a good laugh. She fights, runs, swims, pushes herself to the limit. Given she hasn't asked him for anything, just how far will he go along with her? It's a love story. Or a story of survival. Or both.

This movie, directed by Thomas Cailley, with Adèle Haenel, received three awards in the Directors’ Fortnight: the Europa Cinemas Label, the Art Cinema Award and the SACD Award. He also received the Fipresci Award for the parallel sections. His first short film Paris Shanghai has been discovered in Angers in the Premiers Plans Festival, and received the Audience Award in 2011.

Not far from Timbuktu, now ruled by the religious fundamentalists, Kidane lives peacefully in the dunes with his wife Satima, his daughter Toya, and Issan, their twelve-year-old shepherd. In town, the people suffer, powerless, from the regime of terror imposed by the Jihadists determined to control their faith. Music, laughter, cigarettes, even soccer have been banned. The women have become shadows but resist with dignity. Every day, the new improvised courts issue tragic and absurd sentences. Kidane and his family are being spared the chaos that prevails in Timbuktu. But their destiny changes when Kidane accidentally kills Amadou, the fisherman who slaughtered «GPS», his beloved cow. He now has to face the new laws of the foreign occupants.

Timbuktu was in Competition of the Official Selection this year in Cannes. Close to Premiers Plans, Abderrahmane Sissako was the president of the jury in 2007.

Natalia and Carlos, both aged 20, are in love and struggling to survive in today's Spain. Their limited resources prevent them from getting ahead as they'd like to. They have no great ambitions because they have no great hopes. To earn some money, they decide to shoot an amateur porno film. The birth of their daughter Julia is the main catalyst for the changes they make.

The film was presented in Un Certain Regard this year in Cannes.

Party Girl was the Opening Film of Un Certain Regard. It received the Golden Camera and the Prix d’ensemble Un Certain Regard in Cannes this year. The screenplay has been developed during the Angers Workshops in 2012 (under the title Angélique). Previously, Claire Burger has been discovered in Angers in 2009 with her films Forbach (School movie) and Toute ma vie j’ai rêvé (Free Style section). She came back in 2010 with Marie Amachoukeli for their short film C’est gratuit pour les filles (Best Actress Award).

AUDITORS

Part of the Angers Workshops and a specific series of conferences and workshops are open to auditors: professionals (producers, directors, technicians…), exhibitors, cinema students (secondary, technical or film schools), professionals from film events (festivals, film education programmes, associations…) and film lovers.

 In the morning, for the auditors and the residents: screenings and masterclass given by professionals who will share their individual experiences and bring ideas on cinematographic creation.

 In the afternoon: a specific programme for the auditors with professionals speakers about audiovisual actuality.

 In the evening: premiere for the public at the Cinemas Les 400 coups with the speakers present.
