EMERGENT CHURCH THEOLOGY Preface This book was written out of a growing burden for the professing and visible church which is emerging into something new. And emergence this is nothing new. The professing church has been emerging out of and into various heresies and apostasies throughout the centuries. But one of the primary deceptions of our day is the Emergent movement. It is my desire to lead people back to the Jesus of the Bible who is to be loved, believed and obeyed by true Christians. In 2012, I released a documentary film on the Emergent Church movement. Prior to producing the film, I read Emergent books and blogs, listened to Emergent sermons and podcasts, and watched Emergent videos. I was inspired and helped by many of the men I traveled to interview for the film who shared my concern with the Emergent movement. Along the way, I have met many who would call themselves postmodern Christians and have dialogued with them extensively in person and online about what they call Emergence Christianity. The film was dismissed as a “Mockumentary” by leaders within the movement because they argued that the subjects of the film were not directly contacted. Thankfully, I was able to respond that the subjects were contacted for direct interviews. For instance, I contacted Brian McLaren, Tony Jones, Doug Pagitt and other prominent leaders within the movement, but there was no response. At a Love Wins book signing, Rob Bell told me he would be willing to do an interview and to contact i ELLIOTT NESCH his church which I did several times with no response. I'm not going to fault them for that; I know they are all probably very busy people. The only person that ever got back to me was Shane Claiborne who spoke with me over the phone about a number of issues including community, social justice, and homosexuality. Prior to producing this second edition, I contacted the leaders of the movement once again in January of 2014 and asked them to review the film and respond if their views have changed, have been taken out of context or misrepresented. Tony Campolo and I corresponded by e-mail on a number of topics, but he asked not to be quoted. Doug Pagitt replied, “Good luck on your next edition.” Others did not respond. Nevertheless, the books, articles, sermons, podcasts, videos, and public statements of those leading the movement are plenty descriptive and sufficient for a critique such as the film and this book. These are my ways of joining the Emergent conversation. This book includes much of the research which could not be included into a two-hour feature film. ii HATH GOD SAID? EMERGENT CHURCH THEOLOGY Introduction Jesus said, "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly" (John 10:10). Satan, on the other hand, came "to steal, and to kill, and to destroy" (John 10:10). Satan "is a liar, and the father of it" (John 8:44). Today, Satan is repeating the lie told from day one in the Garden of Eden: "Yea, hath God said?" (Genesis 3:1). Before this conversation there were no questions or dilemmas. "Ye shall not surely die" (Genesis 3:4), the serpent told the woman, "then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil" (Genesis 3:5). The attack and lie of the Serpent comes against God's Word. The Serpent suggests that people can disobey the Word of God without consequence, that people's eyes can be opened with some higher mystical experience and that people can be as gods. In other words, the Serpent would have us do what is right in our own eyes though it be contrary to God's commandments. Satan seeks to give the creature the right to sit in judgment against the Creator and His word. "He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it" (John 8:44). The weapon of choice in Satan's murdering and stealing and destroying is a iii ELLIOTT NESCH lie. It is not a dagger, not a sword, neither guns nor bombs, but a lie that Satan has designed for inflicting spiritual and eternal damage in the lives of people. "The devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour" (1 Peter 5:8). Today, many people are being devoured, swallowed up, murdered spiritually, and destroyed for eternity by the lies of Satan; little do they know what they are being told and preached by professing Christian leaders. They speak lies. We live in a time so similar to the days of the prophet Jeremiah, just prior to the Babylonian captivity, that it's frightening. "Mine heart within me is broken because of the prophets; all my bones shake; I am like a drunken man, and like a man whom wine hath overcome, because of the LORD, and because of the words of his holiness. For both prophet and priest are profane; yea, in my house have I found their wickedness, saith the LORD. I have seen also in the prophets of Jerusalem an horrible thing: they commit adultery, and walk in lies" (Jeremiah 23:9,11,14). It was the prophet and priest of Jeremiah's day, the spiritual leadership of the people who spoke lies. It is the church that Satan has targeted because Washington DC and Hollywood are already convinced that the devil doesn't exist. It is the profane pastors, teachers, leaders and authors within Christianity today that demonstrate how the lies of Satan are being propagated in the church. "For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light" (2 Corinthians 11:13,14). R.A. Torrey wrote: When Satan gets into the pulpit, or the theological chair, and pretends to teach Christianity, when in reality he is corrupting it; pretends to be teaching Christian evidences when in reality he is undermining the very foundations of faith; pretends to be teaching Biblical Introduction, when in reality he is making the Bible out to be a book that is not worthy of being introduced — then look out for him; he is at his most dangerous work.1 As the Serpent was in the Garden, so he is now behind the pulpit 1 R.A. EMERGENT CHURCH THEOLOGY preaching another gospel, within the house of God, on the pages of Christian books and on the screens of computers. Satan's goal is to rob the faith in and application of a single verse or word from the Living God. "Yea, hath God said?" (Genesis 3:1). Of these false and profane pastors, teachers, leaders and authors, we are told to beware because they "come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves" (Matthew 7:15). Thus these profane, ferocious and wild wolves are in the church masquerading as sheep. Sheep's clothing suggests that outwardly these false prophets look like Christians. They are in our midst of worship and fellowship, attending our gatherings and meetings. They look and smell like sheep but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Speaking to the church at Ephesus, Paul warned of false elders, "For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock" (Acts 20:29). They look and act and sound like Christians, but inwardly they are liars and workers of iniquity. They speak and prophesy in the name of Christ; they do many wonderful works in His name. Jesus said, “Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity” (Matthew 7:22,23).

Actually the movement is quite diverse, from very liberal Anabaptists who support abortion and homosexuality (like some in the Mennonite Church USA) to very conservative Anabaptists (like the Old Order Amish). Obviously, we cannot group all of the teachings of Anabaptists together and say that all Anabaptists believe such and such. Martin, David Robertson, Dale Heisey, and Ernest Eby. This is a specific subset of Anabaptism that I identify with and whose views I can fairly well summarize and generalize. Accusation: Anabaptists teach that God changed his mind with respect to things like swearing oaths. Response: Anabaptists would say that the New Covenant is not God changing his mind so much as it is God revealing his ultimate plan for his people. God permitted certain things in former times, which have now been set aside with the perfect revelation of God’s will in Christ.

    Early Christian Writers on Apostasy and Perseverance In putting together this article I started by first reading from the reference work—A Dictionary of Early Christian Beliefs: A Reference Guide to More Than 700 Topics Discussed by the Early Church Fathers.1 Patristic scholar David Bercot is the editor of this work, and under the topic “Salvation” there are several subheadings, with number six being “Can those who are saved ever be lost?” The following Scriptures are quoted: The LORD is with you when you are with him. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will forsake you. (2 Chronicles 15:2) The righteousness of a righteous man shall not deliver him in the day of his transgression. (Ezekiel 33:12) You will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved. (Matthew 10:22) Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.” (Luke 9:62) If we endure, we shall also reign with Him; if we deny Him, He also will deny us. (2 Timothy 2:12) If we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful expectation of judgment. (Hebrews 10:26) For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and are overcome, the last end is worse for them than the beginning.

    Who Are Kingdom Christians? “Kingdom Christian” is a new buzz term among some conservative Anabaptists and others who hold a similar worldview. The term has become popular in recent decades through the writings of David Bercot as a way to picture a Christian worldview throughout history that is larger than the Anabaptists, yet still be a term that would include Anabaptists. In the last decade or two, there is a new interest among conservative Anabaptists and other similar groups to rediscover what was commonly believed and practiced in the early church (AD 30-300). Learning about Anabaptism is good, but these folks want to be part of a faith tradition that is much larger and much older than one arising out of the Protestant Reformation. These folks have taken an interest in reading what Bercot and others refer to as the historic faith or kingdom Christianity. Conservative Anabaptists and their affiliates who use this term, generally define “kingdom Christians” as believers who practice non-resistance and returning good for evil; believers who are separated from the world and separated unto God; believers who practice modest dress and head-covering for women; and believers who don't participate in government/politics in a way that compromises New Testament teachings. Kingdom Christians are those who believe that allegiance to King Jesus requires a denouncing of allegiances to earthly entities and their ways of seeking power. They endeavor to give their time and talents to expanding God’s kingdom, nurturing a society of the redeemed, and helping to bring heaven to earth as pictured in the Lord ’s Prayer.

Myth of Original Sin By Mike Desario (http://standingthegap.org/) Almost without exception the evangelical Christian world believes that forgiveness of sins and Salvation can be had by praying a simple prayer to God, confessing your sinfulness and Receiving Jesus as your personal Savior. So much so that the entire church world today measures their success or failure against how many people they can persuade into praying the prayer. If many respond to the invitation they are pronounced Saved and forgiven of sins, taken into the church and taught that God will someday ‘clean’ them up and they will be able to live a better life than before. Although the sin never really stops (and this includes ALL sin: fornication, molestation, adultery, drunkenness) it will in time become less and less as you learn to cope with your sinful nature through the application of His Grace. No one questions this formula or tries to alter it to a more Biblical perspective, although NOTHING in Scripture garners it any support. In the Bible the Procedure is simply: Repentance and Faith.. Repentance Proven by Deeds and Faith Working by Love. But no one seems to care. They gauge everything off the formula and even those who tend to use the correct terminology (mentioning repentance and faith) still hold that Real Salvation can be had using the formals. (Otherwise they would abandon them as false!). This applies to their understanding of Revival as well.

    Church Planter’s Forum and Retreat 2017 Christian Order or The Remnant? Where does the Pilgrim Church fit in the Christian landscape? The word forum suggests that there are some things in life for which there are no simple answers. My observation is that the churches and communities who are successful long term are those in which the founders go into the endeavor with their eyes fully open, with a healthy sense of reality and a good dose of humility. Anyone who goes into church planting thinking that the Lord is going to somehow cover over all of man’s mistakes, is going to be in for a surprise. A forum suggests that some things in life need various perspectives in order for us to better see and understand the truth. Here is an illustration for how I see this working… If I tried throwing this ping pong ball all the way to the kitchen door, I wouldn’t get it there. But if all of you were spread out between here and the kitchen, we could get it there! I’d get it started, different ones of you would give it a little kick and before long we could get this ball to the kitchen. That is what I would like to see happen at these church planters forums over the next several decades. I would like to see us all work together at this until we reach our goal for church planting. (This idea of working together at something like this is a very central Anabaptist concept by the way.) Whenever there is a health epidemic, there are multiple research teams working simultaneously at finding a solution for the problem.

Peter Wagner, and his role and influence in identifying the emergence of the ‘New Apostolic Reformation’ (NAR). Wagner, the iconic ‘father figure’ of the NAR has been declaring for some two decades that the global church has entered, what he describes as, the ‘Second Apostolic Age’ and, that “we are now witnessing the most radical change in the way of doing church since the Protestant Reformation” (1998: 16-17). In essence, he is convinced that the 16th century Reformation has not yet completed its objectives and continues to add revelationary truth to the Church today. The most distinctive and fundamental feature of the NAR is its ecclesiological emphasis on the restoration of apostolic authority within the contemporary Church with the same governmental authority that functioned through the New Testament apostolate; it is from this foundation that all other NAR theological viewpoints stem. Writing from a classical Pentecostal standpoint this study seeks to discover whether it is plausible that the Church has actually entered a ‘Second Apostolic Age’ and, what factors led Wagner to his conclusion that a ‘New Apostolic Reformation’ has been birthed. In order to evaluate the teachings and praxis of the NAR, a literary and exegetical analysis will be undertaken by means of comparison with the theological position as defined, by the Fundamental Truths of the Elim Pentecostal Church (Elim Directory, 2015: 6) the denomination, with which the writer holds ministerial credentials.
