Nagel University Honors Thesis Dr. Thomas F. Thibeault May 10,2006 A Youth in Upheaval Introduction The trouble started for the undesirables when the public systems started being filtered. Jewish and other non Aryan businesses were being boycotted. The German people (not including Jews and other non Aryans) were forbidden to use these businesses. They could not shop in their grocery stores. Germans could not bring their finances to their banks. It eventually seemed best not to even loiter around these establishments of business. Not stopping there, soon Jewish people could no longer hold occupations at German establishments. Little by little, the Jewish citizens started losing their rights, some even the right to citizenship. They were forced to identifY themselves in every possible way, wherever they went, so that they were detectable among the Germans. The Jews were rapidly becoming cornered. These restrictions and tragedies did not only affect the adults. Children were affected as well, if not more. Soon, they were not allowed to go to the movies, own bicycles, even be out in public without limitations. -

RESUMEN La idea de una Entartete Musik (Música degenerada) se originó en la Alemania del Tercer Reich entre 1937 y 1938 como concepto paralelo al de Entartete Kunst (Arte degenerado), que permitía diferenciar claramente entre un arte alemán “bueno” o puro, y otro “degenerado” que fue prohibido por el Estado. Con el objeto de aclarar los orígenes y las mentalidades que dieron lugar a esta distinción, en el presente artículo examinamos el contexto cultural en que se desenvolvió la maquinaria política, legislativa y burocrática del gobierno nazi. El resultado pone de manifiesto una clara motivación racial: un antisemitismo que en el terreno artístico se remonta al siglo XIX. Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage Aaron Joseph Johnson Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Aaron Joseph Johnson All rights reserved ABSTRACT Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage Aaron Joseph Johnson This dissertation is a study of jazz on American radio. The dissertation's meta-subjects are mediation, classification, and patronage in the presentation of music via distribution channels capable of reaching widespread audiences. The dissertation also addresses questions of race in the representation of jazz on radio. A central claim of the dissertation is that a given direction in jazz radio programming reflects the ideological, aesthetic, and political imperatives of a given broadcasting entity. I further argue that this ideological deployment of jazz can appear as conservative or progressive programming philosophies, and that these tendencies reflect discursive struggles over the identity of jazz. The first chapter, "Jazz on Noncommercial Radio," describes in some detail the current (circa 2013) taxonomy of American jazz radio. The remaining chapters are case studies of different aspects of jazz radio in the United States. Chapter 2, "Jazz is on the Left End of the Dial," presents considerable detail to the way the music is positioned on specific noncommercial stations. Chapter 3, "Duke Ellington and Radio," uses Ellington's multifaceted radio career (1925-1953) as radio bandleader, radio celebrity, and celebrity DJ to examine the medium's shifting relationship with jazz and black American creative ambition. -

Programm Jan–Mär 2016 1 NS-Dokumentationszentrum München – Lernen und Erinnern am historischen Ort Programm 1/2016 Im neuen Jahr setzt das im Mai 2015 eröffnete NS-Dokumentationszentrum München sein Veranstaltungsprogramm mit Filmen, Konzerten, Lesungen, Diskussionsrunden und einem Zeitzeugengespräch fort. Im Rahmenprogramm zu unserer aktuellen Sonderausstellung „Der Warschauer Aufstand 1944“, die noch bis Ende Februar zu sehen sein wird, veranstalten wir in Zusammenarbeit mit unseren Partnern aus Polen einen Vortrag und drei Podiumsdiskussionen mit Experten aus beiden Ländern. Die Verbrechen und der Terror im besetzen Polen, dessen Kultur und Staat zerstört werden sollten, sind bis heute in Deutschland zu wenig bekannt. Am Tag des Gedenkens an die Opfer des Nationalsozialismus widmen wir uns der Verfolgung der Zeugen Jehovas. Weitere Themen sind u.a. Jugend- kultur und Opposition, Wirtschaft und Konsum sowie Verfolgung und Terror in der NS-Zeit. Außerdem setzen wir die Konzertreihe „Feindsender – Jazz im zeitlichen Umfeld der Nazi-Diktatur“ fort. Die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Nationalsozialismus, in dem Recht und Freiheit mit Füßen getreten wurden, kann helfen, besser zu erkennen, was das Wesen der Demokratie ausmacht und wie wir für deren Schutz ein- treten können. Freiheit ist immer die Freiheit der anders Denkenden, Glaubenden, Lebenden und Aussehenden. Dies steht jeden Tag aufs Neue auf dem Prüfstand. Prof. Dr.-Ing. As an alternative to the prevailing literature, which has approached this form of musical theater mostly through broad surveys and detailed studies of a handful of well‐known masterpieces, my dissertation presents a montage of loosely connected, previously unconsidered case studies. Each chapter examines one or two highly significant, but radically unfamiliar, moments in the history of operetta during Austria’s five successive political eras in the first half of the twentieth century. Exploring operetta’s importance for the image of Vienna, these vignettes aim to supply new glimpses not only of a seemingly obsolete art form but also of the urban and cultural life of which it was a part. Nichts ist nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg wie zuvor. Die Stadt ist erschüttert, Familien zerrissen. Das Jahr beginnt mit Streiks der Arbeiterbewegung. Unweit des Stephansdoms, in der Kärtnerstrasse, reißt ein wütender Mob den Doppeladler von den Wänden der Hoflieferanten. Hunger und Unterernährung, extremer Mangel, Kälte, Krankheiten und Epidemien wie die Spanische Grippe oder die Tuberkulose fordern viele Tote. Vier Hauptprotagonisten der Wiener Moderne - Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Otto Wagner und Kolo Moser – sterben noch im selben Jahr. -

Job, Zeisl, Exile, and the Suffering of the Ordinary MICHAEL BECKERMAN Mendel Singer, the protagonist of the Josef Roth’s 1930 novel, Job gets out his phylacteries, takes off his prayer shawl, and prepares to throw both into the fire. He wants to burn them, but cannot bring himself to do so. Instead he curses the Almighty: “God is cruel, and the more one obeys Him the more brutally He treats one. He is mightier than the most mighty; with the nail of one of His little fingers He can wipe them out, but He does not do it. Only the weak He gladly destroys. The weakness of a man tempts His strength and obedience awakens his scorn.” And why shouldn’t Mendel Singer, a “pious, ordinary and utterly commonplace man” from Galicia curse the Lord? Didn’t he have four children who broke his heart; Jonas, a soldier who drank vodka with the peasants; Shemaria, interested only in money; Miriam, who lies with soldiers in the fields, and poor crippled Menuchim, deformed and mute? Hasn’t the flesh of his wife, Deborah become alien to him? And didn’t the whole family move to America, abandoning poor Menuchim, only to confront an endless wave of sorrows? The composer Eric Zeisl encountered Roth’s Job in Paris in 1939 when the director Paul Gordon asked him to write some incidental music for a staged version being put to honor the author just after his death. Himself a recent exile from Vienna, where he had enjoyed considerable early success, Zeisl quickly came to identify with Mendel Singer, and also with his mute but somehow visionary son, Menuchim. -

The taped record is transcribed, lightly edited for continuity and clarity,, and reviewed by the interviewee. The resulting manuscript is typed in final form, indexed, bound with photographs and illustrative materials, and placed in The Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley, and other research collections for scholarly use.
