In early Anglo-Saxon England, the practice of post-Roman Christianity adapted after the Anglo-Saxon migration. The contemporary texts all agree that Christianity continued to be practiced into the fifth and sixth centuries but the archaeological record reflects a predominantly Anglo-Saxon culture. My research compiles the evidence for post-Roman Christian practice on the east coast of England from cemeteries and Roman churches to determine the extent of religious change after the migration. Three dimensions in a social structure: Economic, Politic and Social-Cultural: can not be measured together • 2. Occupation is an economic measure • 3. The content of occupations differs according to time and place • 3. Wide variety exists within nearly all occupation groups • 4. Occupations indicate not only skills, experience and amount of supervision, but also the amount of investment needed. • 5. People frequently have more than one source of income (occupation) • 6. Possibility of a lifecycle effect on ccupations Using taxes as an indicator of social position • Municipal taxes on financial strength (something in between income and capital) • Disadvantage: only an economic indicator, however, in practise strong relation with social prestige and political power • Advantage: staightforward quantitative measure: you know what you measure!! • Relation between income and capital.     THE INDIVIDUATED SOCIETY: A FRISIAN MODEL Henryk Sjaardema Preface It has long seemed to me that the dynamic of human activity is directly related to ecological variables within the society. It is the intimate rela- tionship of-the individual to the requirements of his society that not only channels human energies, but provides a framework for value orientations as well. It is as if society were a vast complex of machinery and man the kinetic force driving it. As machinery falls into social disuse, malfunction and inoperation, man must turn to new or alternative avenues or see his kinetic energy fall into disuse. When the crucial social machinery becomes patterned and routinized a surplus of human energy is made available. The stable society has a way of rechanneling these energies into other roles. Where these addi- tional roles are not present-where energy becomes constricted--social revolu- tions transpire. This study has been directed toward one socio-economic segment of Western man in which the role of the individual has been measured against the ecological requirements of the society. This pilot study is an attempt to probe variables which seem crucial to the rise of the individuated society. Introduction Purpose. To investigate the individuated basis for Frisian society. If the total society can be considered in its broadest sense, as a social configuration which transcends the normal limits of thinking built into political conceptions of the totalitarian state, my meaning will be made clear- er.     Historisch Wandelroute Dokkum - Holwerd Afstand: 13 km Duur: 2,5 uur Ondergrond: 2,2 kilometer van het wandelpad bestaat uit grasland. 10,8 kilometer van de route gaat over verharde paden en wegen. Honden: Op particulier terrein (de wandelpaden over grasland) zijn honden niet toegestaan. Geopend: Gehele jaar. Bijzondere historische informatie Ontdek het oude Friese terpengebied. Een gebied met een boeiende geschiedenis. Land van François Haverschmidt en Ids Wiersma. Van kerkepaden, schoolpaden en oude boerderijen. Van akkers, weiden en bijzondere verhalen. Prettige wandeling! Deze historische route leidt u door het Friese terpenlandschap dat dateert van voor onze jaartelling. Uit archeologische vondsten blijkt dat delen van deze streek omstreeks 200 voor Christus werden bewoond. Sommige terpen, zoals die van Foudgum, Brantgum en Waaxens ontstonden op een door de zee opgeworpen zandrug. Andere nederzettingen werden op hoger gelegen, opgeslibde delen van het landschap gebouwd. Ze groeiden later door de opeenhoping van mest en afval uit tot behoorlijke woonheuvels die bescherming boden bij hoog water. Pas vanaf de tiende eeuw werden de terpen in deze streek door dijken verbonden. Door afgravingen van de vruchtbare terpaarde zijn veel terpen verloren gegaan. De route Dokkum – Holwerd voert u door een typisch agrarisch landschap met oude boerderijen en verschillende soorten terpen. Een streek waar tal van bekende landgenoten hun voetsporen ach- terlieten. Wat te denken van François Haversmidt (1835 – 1894), beter bekend als de treurdichter Piet Paaltjes, die voorganger was in Foudgum. In het nabijgelegen Brantgum is de bekende Friese kunstenaar Ids Wiersma geboren en getogen. En Dokkum is voor eeuwig verbonden met de naam van Bonifatius, de missionaris die hier in 754 werd vermoord.

    VAN WIERDEN EN TERPEN Nieuwsbrief nummer 19 (juni 2014) Een Terpencentrum met het oog op de toekomst In 2012 is als onderdeel van het Groninger Instituut voor Archeologie het Terpencentrum opgericht. In de loop van 2013 trad het centrum meer en meer naar buiten, om zich eind dat jaar te presenteren op de landelijke archeologische Reuvensdagen. De lezers van deze Nieuwsbrief komen het centrum al tegen sinds de leden ervan zich nadrukkelijk als Het Groninger Instituut voor Archeologie (GIA) is zodanig zijn gaan presenteren. Nu het van oudsher binnen de Nederlandse universiteiten Terpencentrum ook in financieel opzicht een het instituut van waaruit het archeologisch onder- rol speelt bij het herstel van het zodenhuis te zoek in terpen en wierden wordt uitgevoerd. Sinds Firdgum en één van de partners is die het de oprichting van het instituut in 1920 is de aandacht Waddenfondsproject ‘Terpen- en wierdenland, voor terpen en wierden echter niet altijd even een verhaal in ontwikkeling’ zal gaan uit- intensief geweest. Na jaren van zeer geringe voeren, meent de redactie van de Nieuwsbrief activiteit maakt de archeologie van terpen en wierden sinds enige tijd een nieuwe bloeiperiode de tijd gekomen om het centrum te vragen zich door.
