2 FISCAL YEAR 2017 | JULY 1, 2016 - JUNE 30, 2017 Dear friends, It is with a great sense of gratitude that we present our 2017 Annual Report of the Community Foundation for the Ohio . This report shares what is possible through the power of community philanthropy and individuals who choose to give back. There are many examples in the pages ahead of Ohio Valley residents who have chosen to invest in our community in very special and unique ways. These gifts are making a difference today, but they will also last for the next generation and beyond. This year we celebrate 45 years. The Community Foundation for the Ohio Valley was founded in November 1972. The success of this organization is a direct reflection on the people who have chosen to give through it over the years. The first fund of the foundation was the Fraternal Order of Police Association Scholarship Fund – a scholarship that we proudly administer today. Many, many more funds followed to get us where we are in 2017. For those of you who have given through CFOV, we sincerely thank you. More importantly, your community thanks you, too.

Sincerely,

Susie Nelson Executive Director

4 FISCAL YEAR 2017 | JULY 1, 2016 - JUNE 30, 2017 Matt Velez Save a Life Fund

In 2001, Matt Velez died of sudden cardiac arrest in gym class. He was 17 years old. His mother, Mary, worked with CFOV to establish the Matt Velez Save a Life Fund to honor his memory. Through the fund, automatic external defibrillator (AED) units are purchased and placed in schools and public gathering places throughout the Ohio Valley.

Since the inception of the fund, more than 200 AED units have been provided to help save lives. Mary works tirelessly to stress the importance of AEDs and advocates for CPR training.

CFOV | REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY | 2017 5 Funding Your Passion The Whipkey Charitable Fund

“Funding your passion” is a term used often in philanthropy. One family from Marshall County defined funding their passion in a big way and left a legacy that will help people in perpetuity. Stoy and Twila Whipkey were married in 1942 in Claysville, Pennsylvania. After the wedding, Stoy went back to the army and Twila went back to finish high school. Twila’s side of the family was from Cameron, , but they made their home in Claysville for some time. They had a son, Ron, whom they adored. When Ron was a child he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes – juvenile diabetes.

Growing up with juvenile diabetes in the 1950s was a challenge. But Ron was able to share his struggles with the disease with other children by attending summer camp at Camp Kno-Koma for a week every year in southern West Virginia. Ron enjoyed camp so much that even after he was too old to attend, Stoy and Twila continued to support the camp so that more children with juvenile diabetes could enjoy it. Sadly, Ron passed away in 1996.

6 FISCAL YEAR 2017 | JULY 1, 2016 - JUNE 30, 2017 Twila was very proud of her family, which had deep roots in Marshall County. Her grandfather was George N. Yoho, who served as a state senator from 1920-1924. In 1933 he ran for Congress, but was unsuccessful. George Yoho lived to the age of 96. During his lifetime he was a friend of the famous Wild-Cater and philanthropist, Michael Benedum, creator of the Benedum Foundation. George purchased many acres of land in Marshall and Wetzel counties. This land was ultimately passed on to Twila.

The Whipkey estate was gifted to the Community Foundation for the Ohio Valley to support Camp Kno-Koma and diabetes research at West Virginia University. Following the finalization of the gift, the first grants were made to both organizations this year. Camp Kno-Koma made significant improvements to the camp. WVU Health Sciences Center used grant funds to purchase equipment to enhance and improve their ongoing diabetes research program.

This new fund and its legacy are a testament to the love Stoy and Twila had for their son. The fund will forever benefit Camp Kno-Koma and diabetes research in West Virginia to, in their words, “help people living with diabetes live their best lives.”

St. John the Divine Living Memorial Endowment Securing the Future

Organization endowment funds provide a meaningful way to strengthen and grow fundraising efforts and offers a permanent means of support. CFOV assumes the challenges of endowed fund management for the participating organizations, which allows them to fully focus on their mission. The St. John the Divine Living Memorial Endowment is a wonderful example of such a fund.

Church members had a vision – to build an endowment of $1,000,000 to ensure the future support of the church. The endowment seeks 100 contributors who will each make a gift of $10,000, either at once or over time. The resulting principal balance will be held in perpetuity and the interest will be distributed to the church annually for operating expenses. The members of the St. John the Divine Greek Orthodox Church continue to make progress toward the desired endowment goal and we are proud to support their efforts of preserving their parish for generations to come.

CFOV | REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY | 2017 13 13 Wetzel County Fund Demonstrates the Power of Collaboration CFOV established the Wetzel County Fund as a tool to help county residents, businesses and organizations realize the benefits of charitable giving in their community. Since its inception in 2013, the fund has received support from the Wetzel County Commission, EQT and numerous individual donors. The fund has awarded $14,500 to Wetzel County nonprofits through regular competitive grant cycles. Grants from this fund have supported a wide variety of projects including those related to economic development, child welfare and advocacy, and public safety. Contributions help to sustain this long-term giving opportunity, which is supported by an advisory committee comprised of Wetzel County community leaders.

14 FISCAL YEAR 2017 | JULY 1, 2016 - JUNE 30, 2017 Civic Leaders Fellowship Program

Retention efforts in the Ohio Valley continue to be the subject of conversation within government, business and community circles. The Civic Leaders Fellowship Program aims to showcase the area’s potential to those likely to start professional journeys elsewhere with the goal of keeping local talent here. The Civic Leaders Fellowship Program is a community leadership initiative of the CFOV. Now in its fifth year, the program matches selected students with participating host organizations and creates an internship paired with personal and professional development programming. Students represent all corners of the Ohio Valley, attend colleges and universities in and beyond our region, and have diverse academic and career interests. Those involved in the program believe opportunities like the Civic Leaders Fellowship Program can positively impact not only participating students, but those entities also involved in programmatic elements. The true reach of the program is just now beginning to be realized, with some participants maintaining connections with program contacts and others being offered employment after graduation.
