OCTOBER 2013 – APRIL 2014 THURSDAY TALKS Join us at Tullie House for a new series of lectures and workshops on Thursdays featuring a range of fantastic speakers. Discuss, debate and explore the Tullie House collection and its temporary exhibitions, and dig deeper into the history of Carlisle and the county of Cumbria. Handle genuine artefacts from the museum collection, including stone axes, flint tools and pottery, take a gallery tour and join in with lively discussion and debate. THURSDAY TALKS Three Solway Churches Thursday 27 February 2pm, Lecture Theatre Join Dr. David Weston for an exploration of three historic churches along Hadrian’s Wall: St Mary’s, Beaumont, St. Michael’s, Burgh-by-Sands and St. Michael’s, Bowness-on-Solway. Each has a fascinating story to tell. Grade II* listed St. Mary’s is built on what was originally the site of a Roman Milecastle, and later a Norman Motte and Bailey Castle. St. Michael’s, Burgh-by-Sands, 12th c. and Grade I Listed, is one of only three fortified churches in Cumbria. Unique in having two towers, King Edward I lay in State there following his death nearby. St. Michael’s, Bowness-on- Solway, is Grade II Listed; this interesting parish church and its bells have a unique history. All three churches were built using Roman stones and their vivid history links directly back to the turbulent times through which they have served their communities in this remote corner of Cumbria. A guided walk of the three Solway churches will take place on Saturday 22 March. A coach will pick up from Tullie House at 10am and transport all participants between churches. Return to Tullie House will be for 3pm. Please bring a packed lunch or take advantage of the excellent facilities at The Old Rectory, Bowness. There really is something for everyone in this programme, from stained glass to Raku pottery, felt landscapes to stunning ceramics, inspired by the Tullie House collection and its exhibition programme. In the hands of the finest local tutors you will be inspired, entertained and (hopefully!) impressed with the work you create on the day. Stained Glass with Sarah Jackson Saturday 5 October 10 – 4.30pm, Community Room An introduction to the Copper Foil (or If possible please bring thick cotton or leather Tiffany) technique. Suitable for beginners, but gloves (not rubber or synthetic) and safety experienced students are welcome - please goggles (not glasses). Please note: people with state your level when booking.
