Discuss, debate and explore the Tullie House collection and its temporary exhibitions, and dig deeper into the history of Carlisle and the county of Cumbria. THURSDAY TALKS Three Solway Churches Thursday 27 February 2pm, Lecture Theatre Join Dr. David Weston for an exploration of three historic churches along Hadrian’s Wall: St Mary’s, Beaumont, St. Michael’s, Burgh-by-Sands and St. Michael’s, Bowness-on-Solway. Each has a fascinating story to tell. Grade II* listed St. Mary’s is built on what was originally the site of a Roman Milecastle, and later a Norman Motte and Bailey Castle. St. Michael’s, Burgh-by-Sands, 12th c. and Grade I Listed, is one of only three fortified churches in Cumbria. Unique in having two towers, King Edward I lay in State there following his death nearby. St. Michael’s, Bowness-on- Solway, is Grade II Listed; this interesting parish church and its bells have a unique history. All three churches were built using Roman stones and their vivid history links directly back to the turbulent times through which they have served their communities in this remote corner of Cumbria. A guided walk of the three Solway churches will take place on Saturday 22 March. A coach will pick up from Tullie House at 10am and transport all participants between churches.
