EFL STUDENTS GO MOOtNG: A CASE STCTDY OF PROJECT-BASED TECHNOLOGY SUPPORTED LANGUAGE LEARNING Master of Art, 2 001 Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning Ontario lnstitute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto Abstract This thesis is aimed at explonng the use of MO0 (Multi-user domain, Object Oriented), a network-based virtuai environment, in supporting Ianguage leaming through a collaborative project which involved six college students fiom Taiwan. To examine the process and outcomes of leamer interactions and productions, this research adopted a qualitative. field-based case study methodology which offers a detailed description of the project members' expenence and language use prornoted by this MOO-based collaborative project. The outcomes of the study reflect the mediation role of online tools and written language for Iearners' construction of virtual spaces and their communication with others. Within the context of technology-supported language leaming, it was possible to describe the varied language leaniing activities in the MO0 environment using Cummins' anaiytical framework in turn focusing on language. meaning and use. Four of the six participants' viewpoints toward MOOing and language Iearning, technical issues and their project work were investigated. In addition, the study will compare the language found in World of Warcraft with language found on other parts of the Internet, especially chatgroups. Based on 1045 recorded chat messages, this study examines the use of abbreviations, emoticons, vocabulary, capitalization, spelling, multiple letter use and the use of rare characters. The results of the investigation show that the language of World of Warcraft differs from Standard English on several aspects, primarily in the use of abbreviations. This is supported by secondary sources. The results also show that the use of language is probably not based on the desire to deliver a message quickly, but rather to reach out to people. In addition, the results show that the language found in World of Warcraft is more advanced than a simple effort to try to imitate speech, thereby performing more than written speech. Utilizing the uses and gratification theory, content gratifications are examined through the types of topics publically viewable on an active online wedding planning Website. Because of the extensive reach of such forums, one particular region, New Jersey, will be examined. Process gratifications will be discussed as participants share personal experiences from their time spent on this particular online bulletin board planning their wedding celebration. Furthermore, the dynamics of interaction among this group will be analyzed over the course of half a calendar year and will show the types of interaction taking place through content analysis.
