TUAN Dear Parishioners, Here is a reflection for this weekend’s readings; Love of God and love of neighbor are the two constants, the two beams of light illuminating the path for us on our journey. The two commandments Jesus identifies as the greatest are each taken from the Torah--what we know as the first five books of the Bible. We hear some of their implications in the first reading. You shall not mistreat an alien. Why not? Because you were once aliens yourself. Hundreds of years later, Paul was an alien in Thessalonica. The hospitable way he was welcomed by the Thessalonians was to be praised. They in turn became a model for those in the neighboring regions of Macedonia and Achaia. We have been, and in some ways still are, aliens ourselves, in time if not in place, for our towns, our nations, and our world have changed dramatically in the years since we were born. We may feel like aliens in a new city, workplace, or social setting, or simply by living in the 2020’s . But we are not alone. God hears our cries, “for I am compassionate” ( Exodus 22:26 ). So neighbor, be they alien or not, for they are us and we are them. How can your love of God and neighbor be a model for others? Love and Prayers. Fr. Mixson University of Alabama Introduction In the last three decades and more, substantial new scholarly work on John of Capistrano has slowly begun to expose, and to push beyond, the limits of the venerable synthesis of Johannes Hofer 1. Ovidio Capitani first pointed the way, with a seminal essay in a 1989 volume of conference proceedings devoted to the saint: For all of its interpretive allure, any vision of Capistrano as champion of Christian unity and as the “Apostle of Europe” presumed both a hopelessly generalized view of a centuries-long “middle ages,” and a hopelessly romanticized view of a unified and Christian medieval Europe . And to view Capistrano as a figure fighting for reform and against the enemies of Christendom, even in Hofer’s cautious and scholarly manner, merely replicated the sanitized story of a solitary, saintly hero – a story rooted in historiographical and polemical traditions that reached back ultimately to the hagiographers themselves 2.     THE ROLE OF THE FRANCISCANS IN THE KINGDOM OF BOSNIA DURING THE REIGN OF KING STJEPAN TOMAŠ (1443–1461) Paweł Cholewicki This article is a condensed version of my MA thesis of the same title,1 which treated the problem of the role of the Franciscans during the reign of the penultimate king of Bosnia, Stjepan Tomaš, whose reign was a period of major progress for Catholicism. My work problematized the activities of the Franciscans of the Bosnian vicary through looking at their entire mission, the Observant reform, their role at the royal court and the organization of an anti-Ottoman crusade. The reign of Tomaš was essentially a time of the Franciscans’ triumph over the heretical Bosnian Church, the traditional spiritual pillar of political power in Bosnia. The spheres of life that these two rival organizations were competing to dominate were fully taken over by the friars during the reign of Tomaš. At the same time, the expansion of the Observant movement contributed to the partition of the large Bosnian vicary into smaller Observant units. The conflict between the Franciscans of Bosnia and their Observant superiors went on during the entire reign of Tomaš and brought the monarchy and the vicary closely together. The main sources that I used in my research were documents issued by the Papal chancellery and the Ragusan chancellery, as well as general documents of the Franciscan order. To a lesser degree, I also used Franciscan chronicles. The Franciscans of Bosnia in general have received ample scholarly attention from the scholars of different disciplines and backgrounds.
