TUAN Dear Parishioners, Here is a reflection for this weekend’s readings; Love of God and love of neighbor are the two constants, the two beams of light illuminating the path for us on our journey. The two commandments Jesus identifies as the greatest are each taken from the Torah--what we know as the first five books of the Bible. We hear some of their implications in the first reading. You shall not mistreat an alien. Why not? Because you were once aliens yourself. Hundreds of years later, Paul was an alien in Thessalonica. The hospitable way he was welcomed by the Thessalonians was to be praised. They in turn became a model for those in the neighboring regions of Macedonia and Achaia. We have been, and in some ways still are, aliens ourselves, in time if not in place, for our towns, our nations, and our world have changed dramatically in the years since we were born. We may feel like aliens in a new city, workplace, or social setting, or simply by living in the 2020’s . But we are not alone. God hears our cries, “for I am compassionate” ( Exodus 22:26 ). So neighbor, be they alien or not, for they are us and we are them. How can your love of God and neighbor be a model for others? Love and Prayers. Fr. Famous as a preacher, theologian, and inquisitor, he earned himself the nickname 'the Soldier Saint' when in 1456 at age 70 he led a crusade against the invading Ottoman Empire at the siege of Belgrade (Hungarian: "siege of Nándorfehérvár") with the Hungarian military commander John Hunyadi. Together with James of the Marches, John entered the Order of Friars Minor at Perugia on 4 October 1416. Along with James, he studied theology at Fiesole, near Florence, under St. Bernardine of Siena. He soon gave himself up to the most rigorous asceticism, violently defending the ideal of strict observance and orthodoxy, following the example set by Bernardine. From 1420 onwards, he preached with great effect in numerous cities and eventually became well known. He was ordained in 1425. Unlike most Italian preachers of repentance in the 15th century, John was effective in northern and central Eu- rope—in German states of Holy Roman Empire, Bohemia, Moravia, Austria, Hungary, Croatia and When he was not preaching, John was writing tracts against heresy of every kind. This facet of his life is cov- ered in great detail by his early biographers, Nicholas of Fara, Christopher of Varese and Girlamo of Udine. While he was thus evangelizing, he was actively engaged in assisting Bernardine of Siena in the reform of the Franciscan Order, largely in the interests of a more rigorous discipline in the Franciscan communities.[2] Like Bernardine, he strongly emphasized devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus, and, together with that saint, was ac- cused of heresy on this account. In 1429, these Observant friars were called to Rome to answer charges of heresy, and John was chosen by his companions to speak for them. They were both acquitted by the Commis- sion of Cardinals appointed to judge the accusations. He was frequently deployed to embassies by Popes Eugene IV and Nicholas V: in 1439, he was sent as legate to Milan and Burgundy, to oppose the claims of the Antipope Felix V; in 1446, he was on a mission to the King of France; in 1451 he went at the request of the emperor as Apostolic Nuncio to Austria. During the period of his nunciature, John visited all parts of the Empire, preaching and combating the heresy of the Hussites; he also visited Poland at the request of Casimir IV Jagiellon. As legate, or inquisitor, he prosecut- ed the last Fraticelli of Ferrara, the Jesuati of Venice, the Crypto-Jews of Sicily, Moldavia and Poland, and, above all, the Hussites of Germany, Hungary and Bohemia; his aim in the last case was to make talks impossi- ble between the representatives of Rome and the Bohemians, for every attempt at conciliation seemed to him to be conniving at heresy. John, in spite of this tireless life, found time to work—both during the lifetime of his mentor, Bernardine, and af- terwards—on the reform of the Order of Friars Minor. He also upheld, in his writings, speeches and sermons, theories of papal supremacy rather than the theological wranglings of councils (see Conciliar Movement). John, The year of John of Capistrano's canonization is variously given as 1690, by Pope Alexander VIII or as 1724 by Pope Benedict XIII. In 1890, his feast day was included for the first time in the General Roman Calendar and assigned to 28 March. In 1969, Saint Pope Paul VI moved his feast day to 23 October, the day of his death. Where Mass and the Office are said according to the 1962 Roman Missal and its concomitant calendar, his feast day remains on March 28. Mass Intentions Sat. Mixson University of Alabama Introduction In the last three decades and more, substantial new scholarly work on John of Capistrano has slowly begun to expose, and to push beyond, the limits of the venerable synthesis of Johannes Hofer 1. Ovidio Capitani first pointed the way, with a seminal essay in a 1989 volume of conference proceedings devoted to the saint: For all of its interpretive allure, any vision of Capistrano as champion of Christian unity and as the “Apostle of Europe” presumed both a hopelessly generalized view of a centuries-long “middle ages,” and a hopelessly romanticized view of a unified and Christian medieval Europe . And to view Capistrano as a figure fighting for reform and against the enemies of Christendom, even in Hofer’s cautious and scholarly manner, merely replicated the sanitized story of a solitary, saintly hero – a story rooted in historiographical and polemical traditions that reached back ultimately to the hagiographers themselves 2. The task, so Capitani, was to resist these temptations, and to place Capistrano in the full range of the historical contexts of his era – plague, schism and war; Observant Franciscan reform; a changing urban landscape, fraught with tensions between Christians and Jews . At the end of the same volume, Kaspar Elm assessed Capistrano’s significance synthetically once again, with particular emphasis on Observant reform . Elm reached similar conclusions . For all of Capistrano’s importance, it was crucial to move beyond focusing on him as a singular hero or catalyst, and beyond Franciscan reform as a story focused on the Order alone .     THE ROLE OF THE FRANCISCANS IN THE KINGDOM OF BOSNIA DURING THE REIGN OF KING STJEPAN TOMAŠ (1443–1461) Paweł Cholewicki This article is a condensed version of my MA thesis of the same title,1 which treated the problem of the role of the Franciscans during the reign of the penultimate king of Bosnia, Stjepan Tomaš, whose reign was a period of major progress for Catholicism. My work problematized the activities of the Franciscans of the Bosnian vicary through looking at their entire mission, the Observant reform, their role at the royal court and the organization of an anti-Ottoman crusade. The reign of Tomaš was essentially a time of the Franciscans’ triumph over the heretical Bosnian Church, the traditional spiritual pillar of political power in Bosnia. The spheres of life that these two rival organizations were competing to dominate were fully taken over by the friars during the reign of Tomaš. At the same time, the expansion of the Observant movement contributed to the partition of the large Bosnian vicary into smaller Observant units. The conflict between the Franciscans of Bosnia and their Observant superiors went on during the entire reign of Tomaš and brought the monarchy and the vicary closely together. The main sources that I used in my research were documents issued by the Papal chancellery and the Ragusan chancellery, as well as general documents of the Franciscan order. To a lesser degree, I also used Franciscan chronicles. The Franciscans of Bosnia in general have received ample scholarly attention from the scholars of different disciplines and backgrounds.

    Saint James of the Marches SAINT OF THE DAY 28-11-2020 Saint James of the Marches (1393-1476) spent his life in the service of the Church, becoming one of the leading figures in the 15th century together with his friends Bernardine of Siena and John of Capistrano. Together with them, he contributed to the development of the Franciscan Observance (in contrast with the "Conventuals", who were in favour of a softer rule) and to keeping the faith alive through preaching. Before joining the Observant friars, he graduated in law in Perugia. For some years he practised as judge and notary in Tuscany. Meditation on the Redemption and the beauty of creation gave rise to his religious vocation. From the teaching and charism of St Bernardine he drew his devotion to the Most Holy Name of Jesus (which he helped to spread). The preaching of the teacher also influenced his vocal and gestural techniques, the structure of his sermons, the use of examples and some of the moral content. James preached mostly in the vernacular, dealing with topics such as superstition, luxury, gambling, blasphemy and usury. To help people in financial difficulties and free them from usury, he promoted the montes pietatis , which granted small loans in exchange for a pledge as a guarantee for their return. The saint offered God continuous penance and ate frugally. He wrote books, encouraged the construction of churches, convents and other public works such as wells and cisterns. He used his legal competence to draw up the statutes of various cities and propose the creation of the institutional figure of the peacemaker.
