Nestled in a quiet corner of Connecticut, Solair Recreation League welcomes unclothed folks of all ages to its family-friendly nudist camping in Woodstock. Many Solair members find that nudism becomes happily entrenched as a generational family tradition, returning year after year to participate in safe, child-appropriate activities such as swimming, playing , hiking and sitting by a campfire with one another. Grandparents are seen gathering around the pool with their grandchildren, as they too grow up with this healthy and natural way of life, and except for a bunch of towels, no one spends much time doing laundry.

Nudism, or , is both a philosophy and a way of life that promotes daily activities clothes- free, in a non-sexual social setting such as a camp, resort, club or beach. People that enjoy social nudism reflect an economic, political and social cross-section of society.

Nudists cite significant physical and psychological health benefits, especially for women and children, including body , personal , and freedom from ; a sense of freedom, and peace; a realistic view of diversity instead of supermodel depictions, and acceptance of ourselves and those around us regardless of size or shape; and the knowledge that and sex are not synonymous.

As one Solair member puts it, “As a woman who has always been ‘of size,’ becoming a nudist was the first time I could truly and thoroughly accept myself and feel comfortable in my own skin.”

Just last year, the Journal of Studies published the first-ever full research study of the benefits of nudism. It demonstrated measurably that “individuals do experience increases in positive body-image, self-esteem and life satisfaction after participating in real naturist activities.” The key, it was found, is getting naked around strangers— social nudity.

“People seem to be realizing that there’s enough horror in the world without needing to about the odd swimmer or bunch of naked people on a beach,” says Andrew Welch in his article “The Misunderstood World of Naturism,” in The Telegraph (UK). “The fact you’re all there with no clothes on brings you together; it’s a kind of understanding between human beings. I’m being me and they’re being them,” he observes.

Maureen Cary, publisher of Natural Awakenings Rhode Island, observes, “There is something about removing clothes that removes some masks, too.” Another regular visitor to Solair Recreation League says, “Going without clothes makes you feel alive and healthy.”

More than a decade ago, a Roper poll found that one in four American adults report having skinny-dipped or sunbathed , and 74 percent of Americans approve of designated legal WWW.AANR.COM public nude . The phenomenal recent growth of groups like Young Naturists of America (YNA) indicates increasingly more acceptance of nude living. YNA’s website even advocates nudism as a path toward tolerance, acceptance, positive , ending censorship and many other social causes.

Despite the myriad benefits of nudism, our society is still suspicious of it. Many individuals keep their nudist life secret for of misunderstanding and even job loss. That’s why the American Association for (AANR) maintains a stringent behavioral code, and nudist like Solair uphold this code and respect its members’ and visitors’ anonymity. Sexual-offender and criminal background checks are performed on all visitors, who must present positive ID. Photography is never allowed. And anyone behaving inappropriately is immediately shown the gate. A quick Internet search will yield hundreds of AANR-affiliated clubs, campgrounds and resorts like Solair Recreation League.

Those that come to nudism as adults, but wish they had learned about nudism when they were younger, can gift it—and its benefits—to their children and grandchildren. Research shows that children that are raised with nudism are confident, at ease with themselves and more accepting of differences. During Monday’s eclipse, Chief Photographer J.B. Forbes saw many moons. He shot the eclipse from a nudist camp near Lonedell, Mo. — likely the only such place in the path of totality.

As photographers, we try to make pictures that the public could not make on their own. The eclipse, which would be seen by literally millions of people, made for an especially difficult subject to show uniquely.

Forbes, a 45-year newspaper veteran, thought his plans were set after getting permission to shoot prisoners watching the eclipse from inside a medium security facility in Illinois. A few days before the eclipse, the prison canceled the plan, which sent Forbes scrambling.

He found refuge in the Forty Acre Club in Lonedell, which describes itself as “America’s Gateway Family Nudist Club.” The 40-acre camp is situated about 45 miles southwest of St. Louis and features a heated swimming pool, courts, walking trails, a clubhouse and rental units.

More than 350 people came from neighboring states and as far away as and . One man, who had come from Dallas, said it was the only nudist spot that he found in the entire country where he could watch the eclipse.

Anytime someone’s lifestyle is portrayed in the paper, we try to be respectful. Shooting the eclipse from a nudist camp is unique and amusing, but it’s important to respect people who make it part of their lives. There is nudity, but it is not obscene.

“It was an alternate universe for me,” said Forbes. As one camper told him, “ created nudists, sinners created clothes.”

“This is probably the place you could come to be the least intimidated about your physical appearance,” said Frank Muegge, 60, of St. Louis, who has been in a wheelchair since being WWW.AANR.COM injured in a motorcycle accident in 2006. “The social structure outside of Forty Acres doesn’t exist here. Material things aren’t important here. You could be a garbage man or a CEO.”

Getting permission was easy; making pictures suitable for a family newspaper was hard. Forbes had to be very careful of what to include in the picture. Questions soon followed: Are butts okay? Can we blur parts of photos? How recognizable is too recognizable? “I was so stressed out,” said Forbes.

We did not blur any photos. There was no digital manipulation nor deletion. We did, however, crop pictures. We decided butts were okay, and Forbes made sure that everyone included in his photos knew that they were going to be pictured. A camp board member escorted Forbes during his visit.

Forbes recalls shooting at a nudist colony once before. Clothing was optional. However, after arriving at the 40 Acres Club, Forbes texted, “BTW — clothing is Not optional.” It seems that to get his pictures, Forbes had to walk his own path of totality. To read the full article, click here!

QUEENSEYES It all started with the , which continues to gain momentum. The annual bike ride led to World Naked Gardening Day, an event that immediately appealed to Buffalonians (see why). It soon became apparent that the idea of being outside and naked was something that gravitated to Buffalonians.

It was after conducting a photo shoot for World Naked Gardening Day that a couple of people at BRO started joking around, asking what other “naked days” were out there. Someone suggested that naked sailing must be a popular activity, so we conducted a search for “World Naked Sailing Day,” in order to tune people into the idea of being naked while out on the water, along with the rest of the world.

Lo and behold, there was no “World Naked Sailing Day,” which we thought was incredible. Yes, the idea of naked sailing takes bare boating to an entirely different level. We were also readily aware that people were sailing nude all over the world, but there was no day dedicated to the nudist activity. That’s when we decided that we would launch the first World Naked Sailing Day (WNSD), right here in Buffalo.

In order to get WNSD off the ground, we needed to rent a sailboat. I called Captain Bill Zimmermann, who runs Seven Seas Sailing. Captain Bill loved the idea. He told me that he would enlist a couple of his fellow captains, who would gladly accommodate the nude crew. Time was of the essence because we wanted to get out on the water before the official WNSD arrived. Moving forward, August 1 will always be known as World Naked Sailing Day. WWW.AANR.COM It is interesting to note that leading up to taking the nude crew out for a sail, we were astounded by the sheer number of people who wanted to strip down and sail. It turned out the we needed two boats! Not only that, but people have been coming out of the woodwork inquiring about signing up for future nude sails, which means that we might be onto something more enticing than we ever could have imagined.

What we do know, is that there were a lot of boats circling around is for the better part of the day on Sunday. A lot of people were enjoying the action – strictly sailing of course, and no motor boating. Although we will probably open the doors to anyone that wants to get out on the water in their birthdays suits in years to come. Heck, what’s the harm in getting out on the water and catching some refreshing wind and healthy sunshine, while nude?

Ok, Buffalo, and the world, it’s time to get out on the water, to experience World Naked Sailing Day – a day dedicated to being au naturel. Plus, just like the World Naked Bike Ride (anti oil), we also have a cause. We want the day of nude sailing to raise awareness of the importance of clean air and clean water. WWW.AANR.COM Parisian Nudists Get Designated Area to Frolic “au Naturel” BRIGIT KATZ There is plenty to see and do in Paris, but most spaces in the city politely mandate that people, you know, wear clothing. Fortunately for Parisians who prefer to wander in the buff, a public park on the eastern edge of France’s capital is now offering a designated nudist zone, as the Agence France Presse reports.

The secluded area can be found in the Bois de Vincennes park and it is “as large as a football pitch,” according to the BBC. For now, the park’s zone for “naturists”—as some who espouse a clothing-free lifestyle prefer to be called—is a temporary experiment. It will be open from August 31st until October 15, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.

“The creation of an area in the Bois de Vincennes where naturism will be authorized is part of our open-minded vision for the use of Parisian public spaces,” says Penelope Komites, a deputy mayor in charge of the city’s parks, according to the AFP. Officials have also noted that and will not be tolerated.

Julien Claude-Penegry of the Paris Naturists Association tells the AFP that he suspects “thousands” of people will flock to Bois de Vincennes for the chance to frolic au naturel. That might seem like a steep estimate, but naturism does seem to be gaining steam in France. According to The Local, the French Federation of Naturism reports “an increase of 40 percent in memberships between 2014 and 2015 alone.” The group estimates that as many as 1.5 to 2 million French citizens identify as naturists.

“Being nude is just about good with other people equally, without the shackles of clothing,” Oriane Parent, a 25-year-old student and naturalist, tells The Local. “A naked body is neutral.” Throughout the country, there are about 460 spaces—including 155 camping grounds and 73 beaches—reserved for people who want to let it all hang loose. A public pool in Paris offers naked swimming three times per week, but the Bois de Vincennes zone marks the city’s first experimentation with a naturist park. The new nudist zone is located near the park’s ornithological reserve. For those who aren’t so keen on spotting a naked tush while trying to catch a glimpse of migrating birds, never fear. Nude beaches, also known as clothing optional, free, or naturist beaches, are places where you can strip off your suit and enjoy the sun, sand, and water with the freedom of a bare bum. Nude beaches are few and far between, but we’ve rounded up a list of the best and barest in the world. Just don’t forget the sunblock.

Red Beach, Crête, Greece Red Beach is an intimate, secluded with rusty red, coarse sand and clear cerulean water. The area is accessible via a 20-minute walk from Matala, and around the beach visitors will find caves, ancient ruins, and red sandstone cliffs. The picturesque Red Beach became a tourist hotspot in the 1960s when hippies from all around Europe came to experience a nude beach. Enjoy the tranquility and rustic charm of this 300-meter-long Grecian beauty.

Plakias Beach, Crête, Greece At 1.3 kilometers long, Plakias Beach is one of Crête’s largest and most picturesque beaches. Wreck Beach, , Named for the wrecked vessel that used to lie on its sands, Wreck Beach was Canada’s first ever government sanctioned, clothing optional beach. The three miles of gorgeous beach are located just 15 minutes from downtown Vancouver, but the remote area is accessible only by foot. Wreck Beach is quite popular with the students of the nearby University of British Columbia, and it is North America’s largest nude beach.

Cap d’Agde, Agde, France Cap d’Agde is a world famous . Located in the south of France, the small town grows to a population of around 40,000 in the summer months, and the nudity carries into life off of the beach too. In this little French town, you can do much more than just sunbathe or skinny dip in your birthday suit, you can shop, dine, and sightsee all in the nude. Haulover Beach sees more than one million visitors every year, and the busy beach manages to maintain a family-friendly atmosphere. The South Florida Free Beach Association has helped Haulover receive certified lifeguards and organized group activities like volleyball. The 800-yard strip of white-sand beach has great weather nearly all year round.

Bellevue Beach, Klampenborg, Denmark Denmark might not be the first country that jumps into your mind when dreaming of nude beach locations, but Bellevue Beach is a 700-meter-long slice of paradise. Located just 10 kilometers from downtown Copenhagen, the resort was designed in the 1930s when the right to became mandatory in Denmark. Around half a million visitors flock to the beach every year, making it Denmark’s most popular.

Hidden Beach Resort, Riviera Maya, Mexico This luxurious seaside resort is a secluded naturist haven. At Hidden Beach Resort there are 45 beachfront suites where visitors will eat, drink, relax, and bathe in the nude. Because it is designed for nudists, the resort is adults-only and the staff recommends carrying around a towel to sit on at all times. Dances, spa visits, and explorations along Mexico’s Mayan Riviera are all offered in the all-inclusive package. Plus, you get access to some of the best beaches in the area.

Little Beach, Maui, HI, U.S. Little Beach is a calm, clear beach located next to Maui’s Big Beach. The intimate stretch of white-sand beaches and turquoise water is one of Hawaii’s most beautiful spots to lounge by the water. Although nudity is not technically legal, it is tolerated in this secluded, relaxed area. Some tourists prefer to wear clothes, but most take advantage of the lack of enforcement of nudity laws here.

Massarandupió Beach, Bahia, Brazil Praia do Pinho is probably Brazil’s best known nudist beach, but if you’re looking for something more secluded you should check out the lesser known Massarandupió. This beach is only accessible by a single road followed by a 1.5 kilometer walk. The beach is a staggering 12 kilometers long, but just 2 kilometers are reserved for naturists. This beach is a charming spot for those who shudder at the thought of visiting a beach overrun with tourists.

Grande Saline, St. Barts St. Barts is a French overseas territory located in the sunny, bright Caribbean. A very popular tourist destination for the rich and famous, Grande Saline is a peaceful and isolated beach where the sand is soft and white and the water is pristine. Although nudity is not officially allowed here, the law is not enforced. The beach is located a 10-minute walk across a rocky dune trail.

Le Centre Hélio Marin, Montalivet, France Le Centre Hélio Marin, or CHM, is widely considered the birthplace of the nudist movement. Dating back to 1950, CHM was the world’s first naturist resort, and the International Naturist Federation was founded there in 1953. The family friendly resort consists of a mix of privately owned bungalows and caravans as well as public camping sites.
