Narcissism correlated with vanity at 0.72 (P < 0.001), and was associated pos- itively with extraversion (E), ME and the subscales of vanity; narcissism was associated negatively with neu- roticism (N) and agreeableness (A). Vanity correlated positively with E, conscientiousness, both subscales of narcissism, and ME, and negatively with N and A. A composite narcissism–vanity score was produced using principal components analysis, and used along with scores from the NEO-FFI-R to predict mating effort. The narcissism–vanity composite, low A and E significantly and independently predicted mating effort (adjusted R2 = 0.28, F(9.96) = 7.74, P < 0.001). These results show that mating effort is additionally predicted by narcissism as well as self-reported personality. Ó 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. I. Introduction A. When Kent Keller and I wrote our modesty book, we originally entitled it A Gold Ring in a Pig’s Snout. I still like that title but the publisher had major objections, so we changed it. But what we were thinking was based on Proverbs 11:22 “As a ring of gold in a Swine’s snout so is a beautiful woman who lacks discretion (moral perception).” B. For this session, I want to: 1) Define biblical modesty and immodesty. 2) What the Bible teaches about modesty. 3) Practical tips on how not to look like a beautiful gold ring all dressed up outwardly to go to a party but in your heart you look to God like you are an ugly pig. II. Definition of modesty and immodesty A. Modesty: An inner attitude of the heart motivated by a love for God that seeks His glory through purity and humility; it often reveals itself in words, actions, expressions, and clothes. B. Immodesty: An attitude of the heart that expresses itself with inappropriate words, actions, expressions and/or clothes that are flirtatious, manipulative, revealing, or suggestive of sensuality or pride. Stanley Kubrick’s 18th Century: Painting in Motion and Barry Lyndon as an Enlightenment Gallery Alysse Peery Abstract The only period piece by famed Stanley Kubrick, Barry Lyndon, was a 1975 box office flop, as well as the director’s magnum opus. Perhaps one of the most sumptuous and exquisite examples of cinematography to date, this picaresque film effectively recreates the Age of the Enlightenment not merely through facts or events, but in visual aesthetics. Like exploring the past in a museum exhibit, the film has a painterly quality harkening back to the old masters. The major artistic movements that reigned throughout the setting of the story dominate the manner in which Barry Lyndon tells its tale with Kubrick’s legendary eye for detail. Through visual understanding, the once obscure novel by William Makepeace Thackeray becomes a captivating window into the past in a manner similar to the paintings it emulates. In 1975, the famed and monumental director Stanley Kubrick released his one and only box-office flop. A film described as a “coffee table film”, it was his only period piece, based on an obscure novel by William Makepeace Thackeray (Patterson). Ironically, his most forgotten work is now considered his magnum opus by critics, and a complete masterwork of cinematography (BFI, “Art”). A remarkable example of the historical costume drama, it enchants the viewer in a meticulously crafted vision of the Georgian Era. Stanley Kubrick’s film Barry Lyndon encapsulates the painting, aesthetics, and overall feel of the 18th century in such a manner to transform the film into a sort of gallery of period art and society. -

SOCIOLOGY AS BOURDIEU'SSELF-TRANSFORMATION CLASS THEORY The Appeal &The Limitations Academic of as the Revolutionary Work of Pierre Bourdieu DYLAN RILEY ierre Bourdieu was a universal intellectual whose work ranges from P highly abstract, quasi-philosophical explorations to survey research, and whose enormous contemporary influence is only comparable to that previously enjoyed by Sartre or Foucault. Born in 1930 in a small provincial town in southwestern France where his father was the local postman, he made his way to the pinnacle of the French academic establishment, the École Normale Supérieur ( ENS), receiving the agrégation in philosophy in 1955. Unlike many other normaliens of his generation, Bourdieu did not join the Communist Party, although his close collaborator Jean-Claude Passeron did form part of a heterodox communist cell organized by Michel Foucault, and Bourdieu was clearly influenced by Althusserian Marxism in this period.1 Following his agrégation, Bourdieu’s original plan was to produce a thesis under the direction of the eminent philosopher of science and historical epistemologist Georges Canguilhem. But his philosophical career was interrupted by the draf. Grayson Perry: A Time-line Grayson Perry: The Pre-Therapy Years Grayson Perry is one of the UK’s leading artists. The exhibition at the Holburne Museum focuses on his early work, from 1981 to 1994, when he employed various media and made his first works in clay. After a series of exhibitions in various small galleries, in 1994 his first mainstream show signaled his establish- ment, securing what he describes as his distinctive identity as ‘the transvestite potter’. Perry grew up in suburban Essex and sought refuge from a troubled childhood in an imaginary world ruled over by his teddy bear, Alan Measles. At Portsmouth Polytechnic and later, living in a London squat, he was part of a post-Punk group of artists, musicians and film-makers, particularly the Neo Naturists, a per- formance art collective connected to the New Romantic club scene. Perry has described this early period as the ‘pre-Therapy years’, a time when he explored his complex identity through his art, expressing an anger which would later be resolved through psychotherapy. His imagery could be deliberately shocking, sometimes combining Nazi symbols (a trait of British Punk), reli- gious iconography and graphic scenes of unorthodox sexual activity. At the same time, his work satirised such social themes as class and gender and, especially, the conventions of the art world of which he was increasingly a part.
