These are commercial tapes and play at 1 7/8 speed on the C-1 machine or on a regular cassette player. They do not play on an E-1 machine. The catalog is organized alphabetically by radio show title and the tape numbers are listed within that show. Please note that many of the radio shows are parts of sets or collections. Frequently, certain shows are repeated within several collections so it is possible to receive duplicate episodes of many shows. There are two ways to order Old-Time Radio Shows. You may call your Talking Book Center and give them the numbers of the shows you would like added to your request list. You may also write the numbers on a piece of paper with your name and address on it and mail it to your Talking Book Center. You may order as many at a time as you like, keeping in mind that there may be a waiting list for some of the popular shows. The loan period is six weeks and up to five tapes may be sent at a time. Keep this catalog and contact your Talking Book Center at any time to order. • Forecast Log
Forecast Log http://www.old-time.com/otrlogs2/forecast_mg.html FORECAST Is There a Sponsor in the House? Written by Martin Grams, Jr. The trial-and-error system being an old if frequently painful institution in the show business (else all stage plays would be hits, and all radio programs would have an Amos and Andy average in the Crossley ratings), the Columbia Broadcasting System’s Forecast series shrewdly dramatized the fact that there is no such phenomenon as a sure thing. For two particular seasons, the CBS people enlivened summer’s somewhat lethargic air waves with a schedule of experimental entertainments which, to tell the truth, aren’t experimental in the exact sense of the word, but have nevertheless a refreshing air about them, if only for the ideas they represented. The idea is that neither CBS nor anyone else knew, until they were produced, whether the programs were any good or not, though they were of course, hoping for the best. And, very sensibly, they made a game of it. Whereas the listener during the busy season was told to take what he got and, if possible, like it, Forecast invited criticism. Listening to the various episodes, one could not help but applaud for Marlene Dietrich in "The Thousand and One Nights," and convulsed with laughter as they listened to the amorous antics of "Mischa the Magnificent." (Mischa Auer, that is.) Whatever it was that made people bet on horse races or write letters to the editor, they could file an honest opinion about the programs and then sat back to await the verdict.

  • In the Opening Segment, ER and Elliott Roosevelt Respond to a Listener's Question About US Relations with Communist Yugoslavia
THE ELEANOR ROOSEVELT PROGRAM January 22nd, 1951 Description: In the opening segment, ER and Elliott Roosevelt respond to a listener's question about US relations with communist Yugoslavia. In the interview segment, ER's guest is producer and director Arch Oboler. Participants: ER, Elliott Roosevelt, Arch Oboler [ER:] What have you today? [Elliott Roosevelt:] Well, I think I have a very interesting question today which I'd like to hear you discuss. Do you think the United States should be helping countries apparently friendly to us, and yet communist? Yugoslavia, for example. Particularly when there are so many others who fought with us who need the same help? [ER:] Well um, that question and-and the evident slant is that we should not be helping Yugoslavia. I think uh, that the person who wrote it was not taking into account the situation as it faces us in Europe today. Eh you have to remember when you are deciding a policy, uh just exactly what the whole situation you face is. Now, there are many people in Europe who fought with us and many people in Europe whom we fought against, all of them need help both those who fought with us and those who fought against us. Uh we are helping those who fought against us because we feel that um it's better to have free nations in the central part of Europe. They voted not to arm Germany, eh and I, personally, think that may be a wise uh thing. And--but I think they must be free and able to stand on their own feet um otherwise they're always a prey to communist ideas.

! BASEBALL I I I NEWS CLIPPINGS I I I I I I I I I I I I I BASE-BALL I FIRST SAME PLAYED IN ELYSIAN FIELDS. I HDBOKEN, N. JT JUNE ^9f }R4$.* I DERIVED FROM GREEKS. I Baseball had its antecedents In a,ball throw- Ing game In ancient Greece where a statue was ereoted to Aristonious for his proficiency in the game. The English , I were the first to invent a ball game in which runs were scored and the winner decided by the larger number of runs. Cricket might have been the national sport in the United States if Gen, Abner Doubleday had not Invented the game of I baseball. In spite of the above statement it is*said that I Cartwright was the Johnny Appleseed of baseball, During the Winter of 1845-1846 he drew up the first known set of rules, as we know baseball today. On June 19, 1846, at I Hoboken, he staged (and played in) a game between the Knicker- bockers and the New Y-ork team. It was the first. nine-inning game. It was the first game with organized sides of nine men each. It was the first game to have a box score. It was the I first time that baseball was played on a square with 90-feet between bases. Cartwright did all those things. I In 1842 the Knickerbocker Baseball Club was the first of its kind to organize in New Xbrk, For three years, the Knickerbockers played among themselves, but by 1845 they I had developed a club team and were ready to meet all comers.
