  • Forecast Log
Forecast Log http://www.old-time.com/otrlogs2/forecast_mg.html FORECAST Is There a Sponsor in the House? Written by Martin Grams, Jr. The trial-and-error system being an old if frequently painful institution in the show business (else all stage plays would be hits, and all radio programs would have an Amos and Andy average in the Crossley ratings), the Columbia Broadcasting System’s Forecast series shrewdly dramatized the fact that there is no such phenomenon as a sure thing. For two particular seasons, the CBS people enlivened summer’s somewhat lethargic air waves with a schedule of experimental entertainments which, to tell the truth, aren’t experimental in the exact sense of the word, but have nevertheless a refreshing air about them, if only for the ideas they represented. The idea is that neither CBS nor anyone else knew, until they were produced, whether the programs were any good or not, though they were of course, hoping for the best. And, very sensibly, they made a game of it. Whereas the listener during the busy season was told to take what he got and, if possible, like it, Forecast invited criticism. Listening to the various episodes, one could not help but applaud for Marlene Dietrich in "The Thousand and One Nights," and convulsed with laughter as they listened to the amorous antics of "Mischa the Magnificent." (Mischa Auer, that is.) Whatever it was that made people bet on horse races or write letters to the editor, they could file an honest opinion about the programs and then sat back to await the verdict.

  • The History of CBS Hollywood Television Studios
1 The History of CBS Hollywood Television Studios By Bobby Ellerbee and Eyes Of A Generation.com Preface and Acknowledgement This is a unique look at the events that preceded the need for CBS television studios in Hollywood and, as in New York, the radio division is leading the way. This project is somewhat different than the prior reports on the New York studios of CBS and NBC, for two reasons. The first reason is that in that in those reports, television was brand new and being developed through the mechanical function to an electronic phenomenon. Most of that work occurred in and around their headquarters in New York. In this case, both CBS and NBC are at the mercy of geological and technological developments outside their own abilities…namely the Rocky Mountains and AT&T. The second reason has to do with the success of the network’s own stars. Their popularity on radio soon translated to public demand once “talking pictures” became possible. That led many New York based radio stars to Hollywood and, in a way, Mohammed had to come to the mountain. This story is told to the best of our abilities, as a great deal of the information on these facilities is now gone…like so many of the men and women who worked there. I’ve told this as concisely as possible, but some elements are dependent on the memories of those who were there many years ago, and from conclusions drawn from research. If you can add to this with facts or photos, please contact me as this is an ongoing project.

  • The Old-Time Radio Era, Sometimes Referred to As the Golden Age of Radio, Was an Era of Radio
by Mike Prero The old-time radio era, sometimes referred to as the Golden Age of Radio, was an era of radio continued on p.3 programming in the United States during which radio was the dominant electronic home entertainment medium. It began with the birth of commercial radio broadcasting in the early 1920s and lasted until the 1950s, when television superseded radio as the medium of choice for scripted programming. The last few scripted radio dramas and full-service radio stations ended in 1962. During this period radio was the only broadcast medium, and people regularly tuned into their favorite radio programs, and families gathered to listen to the home radio in the evening. According to a 1947 C. E. Hooper survey, 82 out of 100 Americans were found to be radio listeners. A variety of new entertainment formats and genres were created for the new medium, many of which later migrated to television: radio plays, mys- tery serials, soap operas, quiz shows, talent shows, variety hours, situation comedies, play-by-play sports, children's shows, cooking shows. Since this era, radio programming has shifted to a more nar- row format of news, talk, sports and music. The broadcasts of live drama, comedy, music and news that characterize the Golden Age of Radio had a precedent in the Théâtrophone, commercially introduced in Paris in 1890 and available as late as 1932. It allowed subscribers to eavesdrop on live stage performances and hear news reports by means of a network of telephone lines. The development of radio eliminated the wires and subscription charges from this concept.

  • ABSTRACT Title of Document: HISTORY LIMITED: the HIDDEN
ABSTRACT Title of Document: HISTORY LIMITED: THE HIDDEN POLITICS OF POSTWAR POPULAR HISTORIES. Erik Barton Christiansen, Doctor of Philosophy, 2009 Directed By: Professor James B. Gilbert, Department of History This dissertation examines popular history and collective memory in the mid-20 th century. Each chapter studies a different source of politicized history, exploring who created the history to be disseminated, what their goals and motivations were, why the historical trope particularly suited their needs and objectives, how they managed to convey ideologies through representations of the past, and how this popular history related to contemporary social and political issues. All of these “historians” – DuPont’s radio and television show, Cavalcade of America ; the History Book Club; CBS’s historical news program, You Are There ; the American Heritage Foundation’s “Freedom Train”; and the Smithsonian Institution – attempted to mold collective memory into an ideological foundation for their agendas. During a tumultuous period, at home and abroad, the past became a safer forum for political discourse, and reexamining these sources of historical information and interpretation sheds new light on postwar politics. Surprisingly, deep ideological divisions persisted well into the age of apparent consensus. However, despite significant differences, the key people in all of these cases shared the same basic assumption about the relevance of history to contemporary society. The widespread acceptance of a strong relationship between past and present in postwar American society contrasts with later attitudes toward the past. The new technologies that enabled the communication of particular historical representations and interpretations changed too, and rapidly matured into forms less suited to the dissemination of historical lessons.
