Document generated on 09/26/2021 8:52 a.m. Cinémas Revue d'études cinématographiques Journal of Film Studies Visual Style in the “Golden Age” Anthology Drama: The Case of CBS Les séries anthologiques durant l’âge d’or de la télévision américaine : le style visuel de la CBS Jonah Horwitz Fictions télévisuelles : approches esthétiques Article abstract Volume 23, Number 2-3, Spring 2013 Despite the centrality of a “Golden Age” of live anthology drama to most histories of American television, the aesthetics of this format are widely URI: https://id.erudit.org/iderudit/1015184ar misunderstood. The anthology drama has been assumed by scholars to be DOI: https://doi.org/10.7202/1015184ar consonant with a critical discourse that valued realism, intimacy and an unremarkable, self-effacing, functional style—or perhaps even an “anti-style.” See table of contents A close analysis of non-canonical episodes of anthology drama, however, reveals a distinctive style based on long takes, mobile framing and staging in depth. One variation of this style, associated with the CBS network, flaunted a virtuosic use of ensemble staging, moving camera and attention-grabbing Publisher(s) pictorial effects. The author examines several episodes in detail, demonstrating Cinémas how the techniques associated with the CBS style can serve expressive and decorative functions. The sources of this style include the technological limitations of live-television production, networks’ broader aesthetic goals, the ISSN seminal producer Worthington Miner and contemporaneous American 1181-6945 (print) cinematic styles. 1705-6500 (digital) Explore this journal Cite this article Horwitz, J. • It's a Mad, Bad, Glad, Ipad World
It’s a Mad, Bad, Glad, iPad World Friar Bob Hutmacher, ofm I’m writing on the first day of meteorological summer and my second idea for this Legionnaire article are memory flashes of Johnathan Winters, Milton Berle, Ethel Merman, Mickey Rooney, Buddy Hackett, Sid Caesar, Spencer Tracy, Dick Shawn, Phil Silvers, Edie Adams, Terry Thomas, Carl Reiner, Jimmy Durante and many more in the 1963 film, It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. The first thoughts I had were of last night’s tornado in the western suburbs, U.S. bishops treading in dangerous waters, more mass shootings than even a twisted mind could imagine, a new Covid variant rampant throughout the world and a steamer trunk full of bad news. However ~ I believe we need a break from all the anxiety of the plague behaviors (as I call them), interior damage, negative vibes and scary thoughts of a divided country and divided Church ~ and smile with delight at some of our Catholic behavior. A number of years ago Travelers Aid operated out of our lower level to assist the lost and forsaken of our city. There was a period when this social service kindly offered free sandwiches and coffee on Friday afternoon to anyone and everyone in need. And anyone and everyone flocked to the basement of St. Peter’s! Word on the street spreads quickly and when it was Sandwich Friday here, there was always a line down into the basement. I happened to be in confessional #12 that day, the most frequented one we have in church.

  • Forecast Log
Forecast Log http://www.old-time.com/otrlogs2/forecast_mg.html FORECAST Is There a Sponsor in the House? Written by Martin Grams, Jr. The trial-and-error system being an old if frequently painful institution in the show business (else all stage plays would be hits, and all radio programs would have an Amos and Andy average in the Crossley ratings), the Columbia Broadcasting System’s Forecast series shrewdly dramatized the fact that there is no such phenomenon as a sure thing. For two particular seasons, the CBS people enlivened summer’s somewhat lethargic air waves with a schedule of experimental entertainments which, to tell the truth, aren’t experimental in the exact sense of the word, but have nevertheless a refreshing air about them, if only for the ideas they represented. The idea is that neither CBS nor anyone else knew, until they were produced, whether the programs were any good or not, though they were of course, hoping for the best. And, very sensibly, they made a game of it. Whereas the listener during the busy season was told to take what he got and, if possible, like it, Forecast invited criticism. Listening to the various episodes, one could not help but applaud for Marlene Dietrich in "The Thousand and One Nights," and convulsed with laughter as they listened to the amorous antics of "Mischa the Magnificent." (Mischa Auer, that is.) Whatever it was that made people bet on horse races or write letters to the editor, they could file an honest opinion about the programs and then sat back to await the verdict.

MGM 70 YEARS: REDISCOVERIES AND CLASSICS comprises 112 feature films produced by MGM from the 1920s to the present, including musicals, thrillers, comedies, and melodramas. MGM also had under contract some of Hollywood's most talented directors, including Clarence Brown, George Cukor, Vincente Minnelli, and King Vidor, as well as outstanding cinematographers, production designers, costume designers, and editors. Exhibition highlights include Erich von Stroheim's Greed (1925), Victor Fleming's Gone Hith the Hind and The Wizard of Oz (both 1939), Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), and Ridley Scott's Thelma & Louise (1991).
