BULLETIN OF THE ALLYN MUSEUM 3701 Bayshore Rd. Sarasota, Florida 33580 Published By The Florida State Museum University of Florida Gainesville. Florida 32611 Number 92 18 January 1985 NEOTROPICAL NYMPHALIDAE. III. REVISION OF CATONEPHELE Dale W. Jenkins 3028 Tanglewood Drive, Sarasota. FL 33579, and Research Associate, Allyn Museum of Entomology A. INTRODUCTION Revision of a series of genera of neotropical nymphalid butterflies is providing the basis for phylogenetic, biological and distributional studies, as well as allowing accurate identification of species and subspecies. Revisions published are Hamadryas Jenkins (1983) and Myscelia Jenkins (1984). Nine additional genera are under study. The genus Catonephele contains eighteen taxa including eleven species and seven subspecies of medium-sized neotropical butterflies. The wings of the males all have a velvety black background with bright orange, broad bold markings. The females are very different with a blackish background with most species having narrow yellow stripes and many small yellow maculae. Female C. sabrina have a large diffuse rusty brown area on the forewings and C. numilia have black forewings with a yellow diagonal median cross band, and the hind wing black, or with a rust-orange or rust-mahogany discus. The 9 wing pattern of C. nyctimus is almost identical with primitive 9 Mys celia and some 9 Catonephele were formerly included in Myscelia. The marked sexual dimorphism has resulted in several of the females being described with different names from the males with resulting synonyms. This was discovered by Bates (1864) who first correlated some males and females. An error by ROber, in Seitz (1914) showing a male specimen of C.

  • Introduction 1
Notes Introduction 1. Trans. Mackail (1934, 275). 2. The literature that has come the closest proposes the existence of the hieros gamos, or rite of sacred marriage, in ancient West Asia and the ancient Mediterranean world. According to some scholars, the sacred marriage was a ritual act of sexual intercourse between a king and priestess as a means of guaranteeing abundance and fertility for the people. This idea has itself received its share of critique. See, for example, Nissinen and Uro (2008). The present work in part reframes the sacred marriage concept by considering women’s agency in it, a much-neglected theme. 3. For a summary of current scientifi c thinking on parthenogenesis, see Chapter 8. 4. For feminist analyses of pre-Greek goddesses, see, for example, Spretnak (1978), Dexter (1990), Baring and Cashford (1991), and Downing (1992). 5. For further discussion of hieros gamos, see Chapter 1. 6. It is based closely on my doctoral dissertation, Bearing the Holy Ones: A Study of the Cult of Divine Birth in Ancient Greece (Rigoglioso 2007). 7. For mention of the parthenogenetic aspects of various goddesses, see, for example, Davis (1971, 33); Spretnak (1978, 20); Daly ([1978] 1990, 84); Dexter (1990, 172–3); Sjöö and Mor (1991, 27–30); Reis (1991; 34–53); Ruether (1992; 18); and, more extensively, Hwang (2005, passim). For claims of successful virgin births among indigenous tribes in Australia and Melanesia, see, for example, Roth (1903); Malinowski (1913, 1927, 1929); Montagu ([1937] 1974); Leach (1969); and Spiro (1968). For other, more controversial, claims, see Bernard (n.d.) and Melchizedek (2000, 2:282–5).

  • Significance of Oriental Taxa in Phylogeny of Crab Spiders (Thomisidae S.Lat
© 2016. Indian Journal of Arachnology 5 (1-2): 143-171 ISSN 2278-1587 (Online) SIGNIFICANCE OF ORIENTAL TAXA IN PHYLOGENY OF CRAB SPIDERS (THOMISIDAE S.LAT. AND STIPHROPODIDAE) Pekka T. Lehtinen Zoological Museum, FIN-20014 University of Turku, Finland [email protected] ABSTRACT Numerous taxonomic changes in Oriental crab spiders are listed with justifications and suprageneric taxa are discussed at global level. Similar pattern of more than one inner cheliceral setae is found to be a synapomorphy for Borboropactidae, Stephanopidae and Thomisidae. The separation of Stiphropodidae as a valid family is confirmed. The polyphyly of Dietinae sensu Petrunkevitch, 1928 is confirmed and its tribes are listed in Thomisidae, Thomisinae (Dietini, Alcimochthini, and Amyciaeini) and Bomidae (Apyretini, Tagulini, Emplesiogonini, Mystariini, Porropini, and Talaini). Boliscini, new tribe of Bomidae is created for Boliscus Thorell, 1891 and Corynethrix L. Koch, 1876, and family group names based on Bomis L. Koch, 1874 without known female is discussed. A strange gnathocoxal process in all Boliscus spp. is described. The Stephanopine groups Phartini, Borboropactini and new tribes Cebrenninini, Angaeini and Geraestini are transferred to Borboropactidae Wunderlich, 2004, and Phrynarachnini, Stephanopoidini, and Hedanini to Thomisidae s.str. These transfers are based on similar structure of copulatory organs of both sexes, trichobothrial patterns of legs and several ultrastructural characters. Phrynarachne Thorell, 1869 with type species P. rugosus Latreille, 1804 is now included in the same tribe as Synema Simon, 1864. Senoculifer Balogh, 1936 from New Guinea is transferred from Philodromidae to Thomisidae and synonymized with Demogenes Simon, 1895. Xysticus palawanicus Barrion, 1995 is synonymized with Alcimochthes limbatus Simon, 1885 (Alcimochthini).

ISSN 1660-9972 (Proceedings of the 24th European Congress of Arachnology, Bern, 25–29 August 2008). Crab spiders, tree canopy, and biodiversity in tropical East Asia (Araneae: Thomisidae) CHRISTA DEELEMAN-REINHOLD 1 & ANDREAS FLOREN 2 1 Naturalis, Darwinweg 2, Leiden NL-2300 RA, The Netherlands 2 Biozentrum, University of Würzburg, Am Hubland, D-97074 Würzburg, Germany Abstract In an extended tree canopy fogging project in northern Borneo, East Malaysia, 160 trees were fogged. 86 species of Thomisidae were identified to described species or to morpho- species and compared with the unidentified material (appr. 150 species) of the Deeleman General SE Asian Spider Collection (Naturalis Museum Leiden). The compiled data give a first glimpse of insight into the approximate species number and the overlaps between forest types, the percentage of new species and their distribution ranges. The fauna of the ground and understorey probably shelters a larger amount of species than the canopy because the former includes more poor dispersers with smaller ranges. Key words: crab spiders, South East Asia, Borneo, canopy fauna, biodiversity. INTRODUCTION all, around 11 known, widespread species Through 1992–2001 a canopy fogging project are known to occur with high probability on was carried out by AF, fogging 160 tree Borneo. Approximately 185 species of crab crowns in 12 different types of primary and spiders have been recorded from SE Asia secondary forest in northern Borneo, East including tropical China and Japan till the Malaysia (Floren & Deeleman-Reinhold year 2003, excluding New Guinea (Platnick, 2005).

Williams1 I Department of Conservation and Land Management, PO Box 51, Wanneroo, Western Australia 6065 2 RMB 312 Manjimup, Western Australia 6258 Abstract - In terms of its biota, Koolan is the most thoroughly inventoried island on the Kimberley coast. We provide annotated lists of the animal species known from the island: three earthworms, eight land snails, two scorpions, one centipede, nine spiders, two ants, 34 butterflies, one amphibian, 35 reptiles, 116 birds and 18 mammals. In addition, the W.A. Museum holds unsorted collections of moths and beetles. A range of animals have been introduced, including an earthworm Dichogaster bolaui, a land snail Laevicaulis aUe, an ant (Monomorium destructor), a cockroach and four mammals including the feral goat (Capra hircus). Koolan's indigenous fauna is a sub-set of taxa known from the adjacent mainland, although the blind snake Ramphotyphlops yampiensis, and the land snails Kimboraga koolanensis and Amplirhagada astuta, appear to be endemic to the island. The bird list was accumulated during 10 years of monthly observations, but data on other components of the island's fauna are uneven because of sampling artefacts, with a bias towards large land snails, large butterflies and snakes. Nevertheless, the richness of these groups indicates that the numerous rugged sandstone islands along this tropical sub-humid coastline support complex faunas. INTRODUCTION sampling has left gaps in our knowledge of the Koolan is the only Kimberley island with a long island's vertebrates and macro-invertebrates, history of invertebrate and vertebrate collection.
