La Política Industrial a diseñar para la Comunidad Autóno ma de Canarias no ha de ser ajena a estos objetivos. Dotada de unos particulares parámetros - reducido mercado y falta de recursos bá sicos-, ha de orientarse, de una parte, hacia la consolidación de- una PME que, mejorando su competitividad, sea capaz de cubrir las- necesidades del propio mercado en los sectores maduros actualmente establecidos -agroalimentaria, conservas, tabacos, reparación na- val, otras áreas de servicios, etc. Por otra parte, se hace necesa rio buscar nuevos sectores con gran valor añadido y cuyo acceso aT mercado no suponga disminución clara de su competitividad. No resulta disparatado encuadrar dichos sectores en el -- área de las nuevas tecnologías. Para el desarrollo de estas nuevas tecnologías, es.necesa rio contar con una infraestructura suficiente, de la que afortuna damente existen notables ejemplos en nuestra región. La existencia de dos Universidades ofrece un panorama op timista que ha de mejorarse con la creación de nuevos centros y -- consolidación de los existentes. Dentro de éstos es precisa la -- creación de grupos de trabajo con vocación investigadora, la conso lidación de personal docente que sepa encauzar nuevas iniciativas- científicas, la dotación de medios a los laboratorios y centros de investigación, la comunicación entre los usuarios y de éstos con - la propia industria, evitando que la labor científica se convierta en un mero juego intelectual limitado a los muros de la propia [ini versidad. Con esta publicación hemos querido dotar, a los interesa dos en la búsqueda de nuevas soluciones a los viejos problemas —— planteados por la industria y por la economía, de una herramienta de trabajo que consideramos necesaria para informar de los recur- sos tecnológicos existentes en la Región, herramienta que ha de -- permitir encontrar, al promotor industrial y al futuro empresario, las ayudas técnicas y científicas precisas para afrontar nuevos -- proyectos o nuevos procesos en su actividad. Este inventario no ha de ser una acción aislada promovida por esta Consejería. Con la creación del SIE (Servicio de Informa- lo ción Empresarial) se ofrece a las empresas la búsqueda informati zada de fuentes de datos, ayudas, patentes, tecnologías y medio existentes o no en la Comunidad. La utilización de las nuevas tec nologías de la información, permite el acceso a aquellas fuentes: de información ms relevantes a nivel nacional y, a traves de -- ellas a los bancos de datos existentes en todo el mundo. Todo ello ha de redundar en e]. diseño de una política de fomento ms eficaz y, acorde con las posibilidades y necesidades de Canarias. Por todo ello, me complace ofrecer esta publicación, fru to del trabajo y dedicación de los servicios técnicos de la Dire ción General de Industria, con la certeza de que ha de contribui a fomentar la inquietud e interés de todos, en elevar el nivel -- tecnológico de nuestros sectores productivos, permitiendo afrontar el futuro de nuestra Región con razonable optimismo. En el capítulo de reconocimientos, es de justicia agrade cer a la Dirección General de Innovación Industrial y Tecnología del Ministerio de Industria y Energía, la inestimable ayuda pres tada para la confección de este Inventario. MANUEL FERNANDEZ GONZALEZ CONSEJERO DE INDUSTRIA Y ENERGIA I.-INIRODUCC ION 12 1.1 DESARROLLODELAOBRA Dentro de la Política Industrial de la Consejerla de Industria y Energía, la definición de un perfil preciso sobre lo que ha de ser el futuro desarrollo industrial en Canarias y dentro de él las medidas de promoción a adoptar es un objetivo pendiente de lograr que se halla influido - por condicionantes jurídicos y económicos en contInua evo lución. Las características humanas, físicas y geográfi—— cas de la región, no ayudan a clarificar los fines de un - proceso de industrialización. La alternativa de sectores - maduros versus sectores industriales de tecnología avanza da, no define una línea clara de separación que permita to mar una decisión con suficientes variables conocidas. Qui zá como ocurre en la mayor parte de los problemas que se - plantean, la mejor solución es una intermedia que no renun cje de una manera definitiva a ninguna de las alternativas Desde la asunción de competencias en materia de - industria se ha pretendido dar a esta política, ua dinámi ca de la que carecía anteriormente. Una de las medidas to madas ha sido la adaptación de la estructura de la Conseje ría mediante la creación de servicios dotados de medios -- adecuados a aquellos objetivos. Otra medida fue la firma de convenios coi órganos competentes del Ministerio de Industria y Energía en orden a los siguientes fines señalados en los mismos: - Desarrollo y coordinación de todas aquellas ac tividades encaminadas a favorecer la potencia-— ción de la pequeña y mediana empresa industrial. - Desarrollo de una política de promoción de la - innovac ión tecnológica. Dentro de estos convenios se acordá la realización de un Inventario de Recursos Tecnológicos que permitiera - “disponer de un sistema de información específica que faci lite orientación y asistencia a las empresas para la reso lución de la problemática que se les plantea en su esfuer zo de inncvación tecnológica y racionalización organizati va”. 13 Fiemos desarrollado esta obra en tres capítulos. El pri mer capítulo incluye el desarrollo de la obra y úna exposición - sobre los conceptos de Investigación y Desarrollo Tecnológico, - sobre actuaciones, programas y tendencias de éstos en los paises industrial izados. El Segundo Capítulo, base de este inventario recoge la- información sobre los recursos tecnológicos

Although the special appearance of the eggs of the species Phyllium philippinicum, which imitate plant seeds, has received attention in different taxonomic studies, the attachment capability of the eggs remains rather anecdotical. Weherein elucidate the specialized attachment mechanism of the eggs of this species and provide the first experimental approach to systematically characterize the functional properties of their adhesion by using different microscopy techniques and attachment force measurements on substrates with differing degrees of roughness and surface chemistry, as well as repetitive attachment/detachment cycles while under the influence of water contact. We found that a combination of folded exochorionic structures (pinnae) and a film of adhesive secretion contribute to attachment, which both respond to water. Adhesion is initiated by the glue, which becomes fluid through hydration, enabling adaption to the surface profile. Hierarchically structured pinnae support the spreading of the glue and reinforcement of the film. This combination aids the egg’s surface in adapting to the surface roughness, yet the attachment strength is additionally influenced by the egg’s surface chemistry, favoring hydrophilic substrates.

S. de Medeiros1 & Cassandra G. Extavour1,2* Over the course of evolution, organism size has diversified markedly. Changes in size are thought to have occurred because of developmental, morphological and/or ecological pressures. To perform phylogenetic tests of the potential effects of these pressures, here we generated a dataset of more than ten thousand descriptions of insect eggs, and combined these with genetic and life-history datasets. We show that, across eight orders of magnitude of variation in egg volume, the relationship between size and shape itself evolves, such that previously predicted global patterns of scaling do not adequately explain the diversity in egg shapes. We show that egg size is not correlated with developmental rate and that, for many insects, egg size is not correlated with adult body size. Instead, we find that the evolution of parasitoidism and aquatic oviposition help to explain the diversification in the size and shape of insect eggs. Our study suggests that where eggs are laid, rather than universal allometric constants, underlies the evolution of insect egg size and shape. Size is a fundamental factor in many biological processes. The size of an 526 families and every currently described extant hexapod order24 organism may affect interactions both with other organisms and with (Fig. 1a and Supplementary Fig. 1). We combined this dataset with the environment1,2, it scales with features of morphology and physi- backbone hexapod phylogenies25,26 that we enriched to include taxa ology3, and larger animals often have higher fitness4.

COOLEY AND BENET SALWAY IGENERAL I.i General Introduction The aim of this quinquennial survey remains the same as its predecessor, as for the most part does the format, though the team is regrettably reduced by one.1 With an eye to the study of the Roman world, we hope to signal the most important newly published inscriptions, signicant reinterpretations of previously published material, new trends in scholarship, recent studies that draw heavily on epigraphic sources, and noteworthy developments in the various aids to understanding inscriptions (both traditional printed material and electronic resources). In the context of this journal, the geographical range and chronological scope reect the contours and history of the Roman state from its beginnings down to the end of the seventh century. As such, not only does the survey naturally take in Greek as well as Latin texts, but also epigraphic material in other languages relevant to the Roman world.

Ancient Alexandria was built by the Greek Macedonians. Ptolemy started the dynasty and in thirty years completed the first lighthouse, and the grand library and museum, which functioned as a university with an emphasis on science, known as “The Alexandrian School”. Scholars attended as “the birthplace of science” from all over the ancient world. Two of the most eminent were Euclid, the father of geometry, and Claudios Ptolemy, writer of The Almagest, a book on astronomy. These are the oldest surviving science textbooks. Herein there are stories about scientists, poets and religious philosophers, responsible for influ- encing the western mind with their writings. Modern Alexandria was rebuilt in 1805 by multiethnic commu- nities who created a successful commercial city and port with an enviable life-style for its inhabitants for 150 years. In 1952 the Free Officers of the Egyptian Army masterminded a coup to free the country from the monarchy and British domination. In 1956 the socialist regime under Colonel Gamal Abdel Nasser closed the Suez Canal, resulting in the Anglo-French-Israeli invasion. This outburst of Egyptian nationalism and military revolution by this understand- ably anti-Western regime included the confiscation of property belonging to foreigners and the subsequent mass exodus of business and artisan classes that hitherto had made the city so successful. The author was an eye-witness to these events and he sets out the polit- ical errors and failures of both Egyptian and Western leaders.

They represent the deliberative and forensic styles re- spectively. The third category recognized by the ancients, epideictic oratory, is represented in this volume by the Funeral Speech and the Erotic Essat/. Such compositions were not designed to persuade the hearers but to delight them and confirm them in sentiments already endorsed by habit and tradi- tion. The Erotic Essay is usually called a speech, but is supposed to have been read from a written copy to a small select group. The Prooemia or Exordia are closely^ related to the Public Orations. They comprise fifty-six paragraphs intended for use as introductions to speeches before the Council or Assembly. Of the six Letters five are addressed to the Council and Assembly and contain matters of public interest ; they also belong, there- fore, ^^'ith the Public Orations.
