Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– ABSTRACT 3 ABSTRACT During the course of the nineteenth century children’s early reading experience was radically transformed; late eighteenth-century children were expected to cut their teeth on morally improving texts, while Victorian children learned to read more playfully through colourful picturebooks. This thesis explores the reasons for this paradigm change through a study of the key developments in children’s publishing from 1783 to 1900. Successively examining an amateur author, a commercial publisher, an innovative editor, and a brilliant illustrator with a strong interest in progressive theories of education, the thesis is alive to the multiplicity of influences on children’s reading over the century. Chapter One outlines the scope of the study. Chapter Two focuses on Ellenor Fenn’s graded dialogues, Cobwebs to catch flies (1783), initially marketed as part of a reading scheme, which remained in print for more than 120 years. Fenn’s highly original method of teaching reading through real stories, with its emphasis on simple words, large type, and high-quality pictures, laid the foundations for modern nursery books. Chapter Three examines John Harris, who issued a ground- breaking series of colour-illustrated rhyming stories and educational books in the 1810s, marketed as ‘Harris’s Cabinet of Amusement and Instruction’. -

Early Victorian London was expanding at a furious pace. Much of the new suburban housing consisted of cheap copies of Georgian neo-classicism. At the same time a large part of the city’s centre, a substantial proportion of which had been rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1666, had fallen into decay. The alarming pace of change in the built environment was mirrored by that in the political realm. The threat of revolution, it was widely believed, could only be ended by a significant programme of reform but there was no consensus as to whether that should be essentially institutional, financial or moral. In these circumstances the past, and its material evidences, came to play a prominent role in the public imagination, as either a source of vital tradition or of dangerous vice and complacency. -

Typography, Illustration and Narration in Three Novels by Alasdair Gray

Craig Linwood Bachelor of Arts (Honours) School of Humanities Arts, Education and Law Griffith University Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy February 2017 Abstract. The impetus of the thesis emerged through an academic interest in how experimental uses of typography and illustration functioned as a method of narration within literature. This was followed by investigations into the use of typography and illustration yielded that while there is a growing field of literary study examining non-linguistic elements within narratives, there are few studies into typography and illustration and how an author utilises and develops them as a method of narration. In light of this, this thesis examines attempts to expand upon the act of narration through the use of typography and illustration in both experimental and common forms. This is focused through Scottish artist Alasdair Gray and three of his novels: Lanark: A Life in Four Books, 1982, Janine and Poor Things. While Gray’s novels are contemporary his use of typography and illustration engages in wider print cultures that facilitated experiment into literature involving the manipulation of typography, illustration and the traditions of narrative. Experimentation in literature from 1650 to 1990, be it through illustration, typography or the composition of narrative, often emerged when printing practice and its product were no longer seen as efficient at communicating to modernising audiences. This act often coincided with larger changes within print cultures that affected laws, politics, the means of distribution, views of design i and methods of distribution. -
Phiz - the Man Who Drew Dickens
Phiz - the Man who drew Dickens Of the many colourful characters in the Bicknell ancestry, Phiz is possibly the most appealing. His story is also more credibly documented than the pre-Victorians whose courage in battle or other achievements seem now to have been embellished by the now-notorious Sydney Algernon Bicknell, our Victorian family archivist. Phiz, or Hablot Knight Browne to give him his proper name, is the subject of a wonderful book published in late 2004 by his great-great-granddaughter Valerie Browne Lester. For over 23 years he worked with Charles Dickens and Phiz 's drawings brought to life a galaxy of much-loved characters, from Mr Pickwick, Nicholas Nickleby and Mr Micawber to Little Nell and David Copperfield. Phiz lived a life as rich as any novel and Valerie's rendition of life in Victorian London is enchanting. Of great interest to his family, which includes the Bicknells, is the mystery of his birth, which Valerie has researched in great detail for the first time. Phiz came from an old Huguenot Spitalfields family, ostensibly the fourteenth child of debt-ridden parents, William Loder Browne and Katherine Hunter. Now it turns out that the eldest daughter Kate had an affair in France with Captain Nicholas Hablot of Napoleon's Imperial Guard; a month before Hablot's birth the true father was killed at the battle of Waterloo. Kate's parents "adopted" Kate's illegitimate son and falsified the birth papers of both Hablot and their own son Decimus born embarrassingly close. Lucinda, Kate's younger sister was 14 at the time. -

Of the 25 distinguished writers and painters who lived in this area between 1860 and 1905 over half of them resided in this small area in the south of the parish, attracted down from London with the arrival of the railways. With your back to the A283 walk up New Road to Combe Lane, cross over and proceed ahead to Witley station. Proceed to the top of the station car park and take the public footpath over the railway line and continue ahead over a cross roads. When the footpath meets a road turn left. Redlands is on your left. Arthur Melville RWS, ARSA (1855-1904) rented the house from his friend Walford Graham Robertson. The Studio is next to Redlands. -

With the availability of affordable books in the 18th century, due to the introduction of new mechanization, individuals had the ability to improve their lives and widen their worlds. In the 19th century, writers of fiction began to specialize in literature for children. In the 20th century, books for children, with beautiful, colorful illustrations, became a common gift for children. The relatively rapid progression from moralistic small pamphlets on cheap paper with crude woodcuts to the world of Berenstain Bears, colorful Golden Books, and the tongue-twisters of Dr. Seuss is an intriguing social change. The story of how a storybook moves from an idea to the bookstore shelf is equally fascinating. Loranth Cleveland Public Library Fine Arts and Special Collections Department PREFACE The Illustrated Book exhibit was assembled to present an overview of the history of book illustration for a general audience. The plan and scope of the exhibit were developed within the confines of available exhibit space on the third floor of Main Library. Materials were selected from the holdings of Special Collections, supplemented by a few titles chosen from the collections of Fine Arts. Selection of materials was further restrained by concern for the physical well-being of very brittle or valuable items. Many rare items were omitted from the exhibit in order to safeguard them from the detrimental effects of an extended exhibit period. Book illustration is a cooperation of word and picture. At the beginning, writing itself was pictorial, as words were expressed through pictorial representation. -

THE LOOKING-GLASS WORLD Mirrors in Pre-Raphaelite Painting, 1850-1915 TWO VOLUMES VOLUME I Claire Elizabeth Yearwood Ph.D. University of York History of Art October 2014 Abstract This dissertation examines the role of mirrors in Pre-Raphaelite painting as a significant motif that ultimately contributes to the on-going discussion surrounding the problematic PRB label. With varying stylistic objectives that often appear contradictory, as well as the disbandment of the original Brotherhood a few short years after it formed, defining ‘Pre-Raphaelite’ as a style remains an intriguing puzzle. In spite of recurring frequently in the works of the Pre-Raphaelites, particularly in those by Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Holman Hunt, the mirror has not been thoroughly investigated before. Instead, the use of the mirror is typically mentioned briefly within the larger structure of analysis and most often referred to as a quotation of Jan van Eyck’s Arnolfini Portrait (1434) or as a symbol of vanity without giving further thought to the connotations of the mirror as a distinguishing mark of the movement. I argue for an analysis of the mirror both within the context of iconographic exchange between the original leaders and their later associates and followers, and also that of nineteenth- century glass production. The Pre-Raphaelite use of the mirror establishes a complex iconography that effectively remytholgises an industrial object, conflates contradictory elements of past and present, spiritual and physical, and contributes to a specific artistic dialogue between the disparate strands of the movement that anchors the problematic PRB label within a context of iconographic exchange. -

Date:…………25 July 2020.……………………………….. 3 Abstract This study investigates women’s access to work opportunities, and management of their subsequent working careers, in the London art world between 1820 and 1860. As markets became more buoyant, in the 1820s, giving way to a tide of consumerism and mass production from the 1830s onward, the workplace associated with art diversified and grew, yielding new opportunities for training and work in illustration and reproduction, design of commodities, art-teaching and art- historical study to both men and women who, in many cases, also pursued careers as practising artists. Nevertheless, when Emily Mary Osborn’s painting ‘Nameless and Friendless’ was exhibited in 1857, it followed a tradition established in the early 1840s of presenting a demure young woman, clearly vulnerable and insecure in the commercial world, attempting unsuccessfully to earn some much-needed income from her paintings. The narrative of her ‘plight’ in seeking an income from an inadequate education has persisted to the present day, but it is argued here that this did not literally reflect the experience, either of the painting’s female creator, or of other women working in this and associated occupations at the time.
