Passion... Poetry! Attack the world. Let’s do some damage. What a band. Four monsters of skin. My favorite rockers of the then time. John Doe - Mr. Handsome - of the deep rich voice, the hard, strong jaw, the angular bass stance and the hot/cool lyrics. Their harmonies - some would say Schoenberg - his partner Exene, of the wailing scream in the night, the clear eyed pinning of American failings, the fine words of Diana Bonebrake love and booze and madness in the midnight dawn of Los Angeles. “Johny Hit and Run Paulene...” and he’s got a sterilized hypo filled with a sex-machine drug, and he only has 24 hours to shoot all Paulenes between the legs. So get busy, boy. And he does. Listen to those words! That naughty, naughty Johny. I love ‘em. And Exene’s “The World’s a Mess, it’s in My Kiss.” I just love that crazy combination: World - Mess - Kiss. And Billy Zoom on guitar, or is that at least 3 or 4 guitars. How does he do it? It’s so massive, so sharp, so bright, so fucking LOUD!!! And he is so silver smooth and cool. Effortless fingering, impeccable on the frets. Doesn’t he ever make a mistake? **MEDIA ALERT FOR FRIDAY, OCT. 13, 2017** GRAMMY MUSEUM® TO OPEN EXPANDED EXHIBIT CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF SEMINAL L.A. PUNK BAND X X: 40 Years of Punk in Los Angeles Now Slated to Open Friday, Oct. 13 (Previously scheduled opening date was June 30, 2017) LOS ANGELES (June 22, 2017) — The GRAMMY Museum® is pleased to announce its plans to expand the forthcoming exhibit celebrating the 40th anniversary of seminal L.A. punk rock band X. Previously set to open on June 30, 2017, on the Museum’s fourth floor, X: 40 Years of Punk in Los Angeles will now be displayed on the second floor in the Museum’s Special Exhibits Gallery, opening Friday, Oct. 13, 2017. With more artifacts and space than previously planned, the exhibit will give visitors a glimpse into how X's four original members – Exene Cervenka, John Doe, Billy Zoom, and DJ Bonebrake – quickly established the band as one of the best in the first wave of L.A.'s flourishing punk scene. Items on display will include: • Original instruments and gear played by the band • Handwritten lyrics and notebooks by Exene Cervenka and John Doe • Clothing and other personal items • Original concert flyers for L.A. shows • Rare photographs and artwork by Exene • X: The Unheard Music film, and more! "We are so excited to be moving this exhibit to our main exhibits gallery, giving X, one of Los Angeles’ most influential punk rock bands, the recognition they deserve,” says GRAMMY Museum Executive Director Scott Goldman. "X played such an integral role in developing the West Coast punk movement, and we are excited to tell that story, now with even more artifacts and ephemera than previously planned." "When we were in the early stages of developing the exhibit, we knew what an important story we’d be telling, but we had no idea just how many photographs, artifacts, and other items we would have access to,” continues GRAMMY Museum Curator Nwaka Onwusa.

  • What If Homosexuality Is Not a Threat but An
What if homosexuality is not a threat but an opportunity? Could God use one of the most controversial moral issues in our nation to awaken His church rather than damage it? This requires a seismic shift in thinking, which some of us might not be eager to make. I find it much simpler to issue a commendation or condemnation while keeping a distance. But we need Spirit-empowered love to move toward those struggling with SSA without despising or excusing their sin, because their sin is our sin— our hearts are no different! Love and tolerance overlap but are not identical concepts. The Bible describes a God who loves the entire world but does not tolerate sin. The person beset with homosexual temptation should evoke our concern, sympathy, help, and understanding, not our scorn or enmity. Even more, such a person should kindle a feeling of solidarity in the hearts of all Christians, since we all struggle to properly manage our erotic passions. For homosexuals a denunciation of homosexuality may feel like an indictment of homosexuals. Regrettably, some of this pain may be unavoidable in the hope of doing away with the greater pain of living outside of God's redemptive plan For though I grieved you in the letter, I do not continue to have regrets— though I used to have regrets, for I see that letter (though only for a short time) grieved you. Now I rejoice, not because you were grieved but because you were grieved into repenting. For you were grieved in a godly manner (lit., in accordance with God ), in order that you would in no way be caused loss or damage by us.

NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO ARTS AND PERFORMANCE PROGRAMS By Frederica Kushner Definition and Scope For those who may be more familiar with commercial than with non-commercial radio and television, it may help to know that National Public Radio (NPR) is a non commercial radio network funded in major part through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and through its member stations. NPR is not the direct recipient of government funds. Its staff are not government employees. NPR produces programming of its own and also uses programming supplied by member stations; by other non commercial networks outside the U.S., such as the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC); by independent producers, and occasionally by commercial networks. The NPR offices and studios are located on M Street in Washington, D.C. Programming is distributed via satellite. The radio programs included in the following listing are "arts and performance." These programs were produced or distributed by the Arts Programming Department of NPR. The majority of the other programming produced by NPR comes from the News and Information Department. The names of the departments may change from time to time, but there always has been a dichotomy between news and arts programs. This introduction is not the proper place for a detailed history of National Public Radio, thus further explanation of the structure of the network can be dispensed with here. What does interest us are the varied types of programming under the arts and performance umbrella. They include jazz festivals recorded live, orchestra concerts from Europe as well as the U.S., drama of all sorts, folk music concerts, bluegrass, chamber music, radio game shows, interviews with authors and composers, choral music, programs illustrating the history of jazz, of popular music, of gospel music, and much, much more.

  • Exene Cervenka's Rebellion Against the E Ects of MS
SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2010 BY TODD FARLEY Exene Cervenka's Rebellion Against the Eoects of MS Ever true to her defiant nature, the punk rocker keeps her multiple sclerosis symptoms from hogging the stage. For a punk rock icon, Exene Cervenka isn't much of a nihilist. In fact, when the co- founder of the seminal Los Angeles band X was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in May of 2009, Cervenka didn't allow herself to become negative at all. The singer was familiar with the disease. As a teenager, she solicited funds for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. As an adult, she raised money and awareness for Sweet Relief, a charity started by MS patient and singer Victoria Williams that aids uninsured musicians. (Read more about how Victoria handles her MS.) But even the spooky irony of those experiences wasn't enough to get Cervenka down. Punk rock girl Exene Cervenka stays optimistic. "I haven't changed my plans," she says, in true punk style, "and I don't intend to." Cervenka, born Feb. 1, 1956, received much musical acclaim in the late '70s and early '80s when her band, X, led the California punk movement of that time. Songs like "Los Angeles," "The New World," and "I Must Not Think Bad Thoughts" became underground classics. (Little known fact: Many rock critics believe Madonna's early look was lifted from Cervenka. The Material Girl's style of thrift-store duds and arm bangles was surprisingly similar to what Cervenka regularly wore on stage.) The 1981 X album Wild Gift was named Rolling Stone's Record of the Year.

Amy Scott reports. TEXT OF STORY KAI RYSSDAL: There are hundreds of college and university programs out there teaching people how to be teachers. Some of those programs do a fine job. Others don't. So New York state is set to decide tomorrow on a different way: letting alternative groups like Teach for America create their own master's programs. Teach For America logo (teachforamerica.org) From the Marketplace Education Desk, Amy Scott reports. AMY SCOTT: New York is one of just a handful of states that require teachers to have a master's degree before they can be fully certified. Timothy Daly with the New Teacher Project says that's created a monopoly for teachers' colleges. Tomorrow the New York State Board of Regents may vote to chip away at that monopoly by allowing alternative groups like Daly's to offer master's programs. TIMOTHY DALY: The right to be the exclusive granters of master's degrees, in a state that requires master's degrees, that was a very lucrative right that they're proposing to take away. But Daly says the New York proposal isn't the answer.
