Stanley Jones Professor of Evangelism ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the ecclesiology of the Emerging Church from a feminist perspective. I focus on the theological critiques raised by early feminist theologians regarding the patriarchal habits of sexism and God-talk, systemic erasure and exclusion, and the interconnection of clericalism and hierarchical power embedded within the church. These critiques reveal areas within the Emerging Church where it has failed to embody its stated vision of being an organic, relational, and inclusive form of church. Constructive engagement with the challenges and contributions of feminist theology presses the Emerging Church to more radically embody its stated vision. An analysis of the literature on the Emerging Church reveals its commitment to form a church that reflects organicity, relationality, and inclusivity in a variety of creative forms. At the same time, the literature and public conversations on blogs, social media, and in conferences raise questions about the Emerging Church’s predominantly white and predominantly male public presentation, and about practices of exclusion and marginalization within it. This dissertation provides a thick description of the Emerging viii Church’s lived ecclesiology on the basis of a qualitative research study conducted on twelve Emerging Church congregations in the United States. The work of early feminist theologians such as Mary Daly, Nelle Morton, Rosemary Radford Ruether, and Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza, discloses the theological scaffolding that make the embedding of patriarchal and sexist structures and habits in the church possible in the first place. Their feminist vision of church as radical participation in Christ challenges the Emerging Church to keep re-visioning itself in light of the systemic marginalization persons continue to experience in the church. The dissertation concludes by arguing for the need to incorporate emancipatory language, God-talk, and symbolic systems into the theology and practices of Emerging Church in order to counter the deep-seated patriarchal habits and patterns within it.   • British Woodland Burial: Its Theological, Ecological and Social Values
    From Earth to Earth: a small but growing number of us are choosing to ‘return to nature’ in A photograph of the woodland burial site at Barton Glebe death Everyone dies, so the choices made about cremation, burial, and funeral rites provide a unique window on human values and what matters to people. Death-style and life-style reflect each other. Since 2000 a registered charity, the Arbory Trust, has been offering woodland burials at a site consecrated by the Church of England near Cambridge, and the number of people buried and registering to be buried there is growing. This constitutes part of a wider trend in British society to opt for ‘natural burials’, reflecting people’s desire for personal choice in the ritual, and a growing engagement with ecological values. The existence of the Centre for Death and Life Studies at Durham University led to a collaboration between its Director, Prof. Douglas Davies and the Arbory Trust, and thus to the appointment of Hannah Rumble as the doctoral candidate who set out to research this phenomenon, funded by the Religion and Society Programme. Between 2007 and 2010 she conducted archival research, participant observation, a survey and interviews around this sensitive subject. She contacted relatives, celebrants and people pre-registered to be buried at the site. Though consecrated by the Church of England (guaranteeing a secure future), the Arbory Trust welcomes people from any religious background. Those opting for natural burial repeatedly talk about the ecological value of “putting something back”, their love of nature, and of not wishing to leave a grave which will be a burden to maintain.

    REVISITING MARY DALY: HER VIEWS On THE TRInITy, MARIOLOGy AnD THE FALL AS POST-CHRISTIAN MYTHS Hannelie Wood Department of Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology University of South Africa College of Human Sciences [email protected] ABSTRACT According to Daly, the church doctrines on the Triune God, Christology, Mariology and the Fall are all myths, originated from, and as a result of, patriarchy. Daly deals with many topics from a woman’s viewpoint such as deity, evil, Christology, morality and the church. Daly contends throughout her works that women’s power has been stolen from them through the ingrained structures of patriarchy and that women have to reclaim what is theirs. Daly believes that this means the castration of patriarchal language and images that are part of the structures of a sexist world. She sees patriarchy as a world religion and believes that all religions are subjects of patriarchy − living off female energy. Without any doubt, historically women were marginalised: not only in society but also within the church. However with this said, this article will contend that Daly has succumbed to her anger and rage against the patriarchal structures that oppressed her – and other women – placing the blame squarely on God. Daly rejected God as divine omnipotent, divine immutable and divine providence and objected to the fact that God is viewed as being changeless. The wrong ideas of God’s existence were a result of androcentric theological teachings and doctrines, and she turned away from the Christian faith altogether.     The Emerging Church, Oprah Winfrey, and the Reshaping of American Consciousness: Implications for Seventh-day Adventist Ecclesiology Olive J. Hemmings Washington Adventist University Traditional church has birthed a materialistic culture1 of competing claims to truth, and an essential dis- ease with/in the faith community. A deep sigh for something more rises above the noise of ecclesiological dogmas evident in the rush for books on spirituality - meditation, ego reduction, the nature of consciousness, and paranormal experience. While the emerging church phenomenon is a response to the spiritual vacuum, Oprah Winfrey, “the world’s most famous woman”2 and a confessing Christian steps forward on a huge media platform in emergent mode. With the aid of a diverse team of ministers – spiritual/social action leaders she sets out with the express goal to transform America (and the world). By drawing upon multiple religious traditions, social, scientific and cultural disciplines she functions as high priestess of the most pervasive form of the Emerging Church, and demonstrates the extent to which many people seek God beyond traditional church even if they are still part of it. This paper sketches the basic nature and reach of the emerging church. It discusses it in the context of its academic roots and calls attention to the way Oprah’s media platform enables its outreach by what I call the “Oprah Project”. It then briefly observes an antagonistic Seventh-day Adventist ecclesiological stance towards emergence in order to hint at a christocentric transformational ecclesiology that may render the “threat” of this emergent ecclesiology benign. What is the Emerging Church? The current emerging conversation began out of perceived gap between established church practice and Jesus’ own example and teachings about the kingdom of God, between the church and contemporary culture, and between church dogmatic structures and the shifting epistemology of the age.
