CSUN celebrates Mexico's freedom ByjIMBADHAM StaffWriter Mexican Independence Day was celebrated Wed nesday with a mariachi band, poetry reading, and Mexican food and beer in the University Student Union. MEChA adviser Frank Muniz called the event a big success?.saying he had seen a lot of interaction between people. "It's a good chance for new students to meet old ones," Muniz said, "and not only those within the Chicano student population." .The anniversary celebration was organized by MEChA in Coordination with the USU and Associated Students. The event is held in honor of the 1810 uprising which eventually led to the expulsion of Spanish colonialists in 1821 4nd to the independence of the southwestern section of North America. * MEChA Chair Gilbert Acuna said the celebration was initially scheduled for Sept. 16, the official date of recognition, but took place yesterday because Wed nesdays are traditionally "heavy traffic" days on campus. The impromptu nature of the event, he said, made him anxious and nervous. He said it was like giving a party and hoping everybne would show up. • Grammy Museum® to Open Expanded Exhibit Celebrating 40 Years of Seminal L.A. Punk Band X
**MEDIA ALERT FOR FRIDAY, OCT. 13, 2017** GRAMMY MUSEUM® TO OPEN EXPANDED EXHIBIT CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF SEMINAL L.A. PUNK BAND X X: 40 Years of Punk in Los Angeles Now Slated to Open Friday, Oct. 13 (Previously scheduled opening date was June 30, 2017) LOS ANGELES (June 22, 2017) — The GRAMMY Museum® is pleased to announce its plans to expand the forthcoming exhibit celebrating the 40th anniversary of seminal L.A. punk rock band X. Previously set to open on June 30, 2017, on the Museum’s fourth floor, X: 40 Years of Punk in Los Angeles will now be displayed on the second floor in the Museum’s Special Exhibits Gallery, opening Friday, Oct. 13, 2017. With more artifacts and space than previously planned, the exhibit will give visitors a glimpse into how X's four original members – Exene Cervenka, John Doe, Billy Zoom, and DJ Bonebrake – quickly established the band as one of the best in the first wave of L.A.'s flourishing punk scene. Items on display will include: • Original instruments and gear played by the band • Handwritten lyrics and notebooks by Exene Cervenka and John Doe • Clothing and other personal items • Original concert flyers for L.A. shows • Rare photographs and artwork by Exene • X: The Unheard Music film, and more! "We are so excited to be moving this exhibit to our main exhibits gallery, giving X, one of Los Angeles’ most influential punk rock bands, the recognition they deserve,” says GRAMMY Museum Executive Director Scott Goldman. "X played such an integral role in developing the West Coast punk movement, and we are excited to tell that story, now with even more artifacts and ephemera than previously planned." "When we were in the early stages of developing the exhibit, we knew what an important story we’d be telling, but we had no idea just how many photographs, artifacts, and other items we would have access to,” continues GRAMMY Museum Curator Nwaka Onwusa.

  • Exene Cervenka's Rebellion Against the E Ects of MS
SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2010 BY TODD FARLEY Exene Cervenka's Rebellion Against the Eoects of MS Ever true to her defiant nature, the punk rocker keeps her multiple sclerosis symptoms from hogging the stage. For a punk rock icon, Exene Cervenka isn't much of a nihilist. In fact, when the co- founder of the seminal Los Angeles band X was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in May of 2009, Cervenka didn't allow herself to become negative at all. The singer was familiar with the disease. As a teenager, she solicited funds for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. As an adult, she raised money and awareness for Sweet Relief, a charity started by MS patient and singer Victoria Williams that aids uninsured musicians. (Read more about how Victoria handles her MS.) But even the spooky irony of those experiences wasn't enough to get Cervenka down. Punk rock girl Exene Cervenka stays optimistic. "I haven't changed my plans," she says, in true punk style, "and I don't intend to." Cervenka, born Feb. 1, 1956, received much musical acclaim in the late '70s and early '80s when her band, X, led the California punk movement of that time. Songs like "Los Angeles," "The New World," and "I Must Not Think Bad Thoughts" became underground classics. (Little known fact: Many rock critics believe Madonna's early look was lifted from Cervenka. The Material Girl's style of thrift-store duds and arm bangles was surprisingly similar to what Cervenka regularly wore on stage.) The 1981 X album Wild Gift was named Rolling Stone's Record of the Year.
