It is also a three (3)-credit unit course. The course is broken into 20 units in all. These units are centered on French literature of the 20th century. This course guide defines what the course is all about as well as the course material that you will need to consult to make the course simple and within your reach. The course guide suggests also some general guidelines for the approximate time you are likely to spend on each unit. It is also interesting to know that the guide contains a separate assignment file that will serve as your assessment. WHAT YOU WILL LEARN IN THIS COURSE The general aim of FRE 482: 20th century French Literature is to introduce you to the French literature of the 20th century. The course is targeted at making you go through a kind of “étude panoramique” of the century. Course Aims This course aims at integrating you into the French literature between 1900 and 1999. The course will expose you to some of the important aspects of this period. This will be achieved through various means under which you will be introduced to, such as: • The beginning of the century from the point of view of socio political events, • The literary situation of the century, that is, the conditions which favoured literary and artistic production of the century, • The literary movements and the writers that contributed to the growth of literature as well as their various texts, • The analysis of philosophical thinking of this century such as existentialism of Jean Paul Sartre and Absurdity of Albert Camus, • The detailed analysis of Albert Camus’ thoughts through his literary works; most especially L’Etranger Course Objectives For the above aims to be achieved, there are overall objectives set. Aside from this, each unit of this course has its specific objectives that are found at the beginning of each unit. You will need to go through these objectives before you start working on each unit. You will equally need to refer to them in order to check on your progress and confirm how far you have assimilated in the course. On completion of a unit, you also need to look at the objectives to ensure that what is required is done. 5 FRE 482: 20TH CENTURY FRENCH LITERATURE You will find below objectives that are set in order to achieve the aims of this course. On successful completion of this course, you should be able to: • Recount briefly the story of the socio-political situations in France towards the end of the 19th Century, • Point out what are the implications of that era to the French society of the 19th century, thereby making them yearn for a better life in the 20th Century, • Explain the implications of the first and second world wars on the literature of the 20th century, • Talk about the social situation of France in the 20th century, • Talk about the political situation of France in the 20th century, • Talk about the scientific and technological situations of France in the 20th century, • Talk about the literary situation of the 20th century, • Discuss the conditions that accounted for massive literary production during the century, • Appreciate the role of the writers in literary production, • Identify major periods of the 20th century French literature, • Mention writers that made history in the century through their works, • Discuss and appreciate writers of the period, • Mention the philosophical thoughts of the century, • Name some important names associated with each thought, • Explain briefly these thoughts, • Trace the origin of « dadaism », • Trace the origin of « existentialisme sartrien », • Trace the origin of « absurdité camusien », • Explain what « absurdité camusien » means, • Mention some texts that illustrate the concept of « absurdité camusien », • Talk about some 20th Century writers and their literary productions, • Explain the literary ideologies of Albert Camus from the point of view of Absurdity, Revolt and Humanism, • Analyse L’Etranger of Albert Camus as one of the ‘chef d’oeuvre’ of the 20th Century. WORKING THROUGH THIS COURSE To complete this course you will be required to read the study units (20 in all) and read/consult set books and other materials related to the 20th century French literature. You are to submit your Tutor-Marked Assignments to your tutors. The course will take about 20 weeks to complete.
