APRIL, 1917. On April (5, whilt- moored to the tloek in the Naval Station at Algiers, La., a hoanhiig party in eharge ol' Lieutenant (J.(r.) II. R. Borchardt left the ship at 3:1.5 A. ^I., in eonipany with I'. S. Coast Guard Cutter Davey and the tug Samson, with orders to take charge of interned German steamers. Breslau and Andromeda, following a declaration of war hetween the United States and Crermany. This dutj" was performed, and the party returned aboard at 5:10 A. M. At 1 :.50 P. jM. a general mu.ster was held, and the Bureau of Navigation's radio message No. 13100, declaring that a state of war existed between the United States and the Imperial (German Govern- ment, was pul)lished. On Ajjril 12 we took on hoard 273 tons of coal, and on xipril 15, at 9:33 A. jNL, we got under way, drojjjjing down the ^lississippi to anchorage off the Quarantine Station, where various drills were held. At 8:21 P. jNJ., of the same day radio message No. 2001.3 was received from New Orleans, ordering the Sacramento to proceed to the vicin- ity of New])ort, and there report to the U. S. S. Hirmingham for duty. We got under way at 9 o'clock, and darkened ship at 10:4!0. folloA\ing day the crew were exercised at drills of all kinds, ( On the the 17th we held target practice. We passed numerous steam ^^ and on r -[? and sailing vessels, among which was the S. S. Royal Arrow, which • t-:--i we overhauled, at 10:15 A. M., of the 18th. Sea watches were placed as ordered and the crew was drilled continually until, without fur- ther incident, we went into Newport Harlior on April 22d. From there we proceeded to the coaling dock at ^Melville, R. 1., where we took on board 104 tons of coal. On the 23d ^\e proceeded to anchorage off Goat Island, got under way again shortly, and stood out to sea. On the 24th we stopped the Dutch S. S. iMaartendyk and the British S. S. Kalomo; both were allowed to proceed after an examination, and on the following day the Norwegian S. S. Ramsiiolm was examined and passed. During the day the crew was instructed in. various matters, and the ship sM'ung for compass correction. Signals were exchanged with the U. S. S. Avlwin and the U. S. S. Kearsarge. On the 20th the Danish S. S. Frisia, and on the 27th the Dutch S. S. Mizar and INIercurius were spoken and allowed to proceed. We gave chase, firing two 4-inch shells, and ordered the U. S. S. Terrj^ which was near, to give chase also. The Terry overhauled the steamer, which turned out to be the Dutch S. S. Hector, at 7:20 A. ]M., and permitted her to pro- ceed after an examination. Later in the day the Dutch S. S. Oost- dijk and the Noordijk were spoken and jiassed.   • Introduction Methodology
    Introduction The City of Sacramento implemented a three-week virtual community workshop for the Sacramento Valley Station Master Plan to engage with community members and station users in the Sacramento Region. The virtual workshop was open to the public from Wednesday, January 15, 2020 to Friday, February 7, 2020. The project team received more than 280 responses from community members. In 2018, the City concluded work on an initial conceptual planning that resulted in two master plan concepts. Currently, the City is developing a preferred option and multi-phase implementation plan. In addition, the Bus/Mobility Center has moved forward to 30% design documents for the construction funds grant application. In 2020, the Sacramento Valley Station Specific Plan will be completed and provide a pathway for expanding regional transportation services and developing the Sacramento Valley Station site, with transportation in mind. The goals of the design concept are to establish a well-connected transit center, be a gateway to the city, and provide a mixed-use destination with infill development for the 17-acres of property around the historic depot. The plan area on the City-owned site will be designed with sustainable principles, under the framework of the International Living Futures Institute’s Living Community Challenge Vision Plan certification. Methodology This Virtual Community Workshop served as a forum for participants to learn about the project and Master Plan, as well as contribute their input on the design elements and concepts to be integrated into the new station area. The project team implemented a three-week virtual workshop to notify and engage with community members who frequent the Sacramento Valley Station.

My name is Chris Conybeare, conducting the interview, and Dan Martinez is assisting. Why don't we ask you, what was your name and rank on December 7, 1941? Ernest Reepmaker (ER): I, Ernest J. Reepmaker, and I believe I was a coxswain. I Coxswain is the Third Class Petty Officer on the topside, boatsmate. CC: And what was the name of your ship? ER: USS SACRAMENTO, PG-19. CC: And what does that mean? What was the SACRAMENTO, what kind of ship? ER: Sacramento was a -- originally it was a gunboat from the China coast, serving over there when the PANAY was over there, but they brought her back and it was a coal burner which they made into an oil burner. CC: Let's go back a little bit and get a little history. Where were you born and raised? What was your hometown? ER: I was born in Denver, Colorado and I -- but I was there about four years and went to Indianapolis, Indiana. I was in an orphan's home for about eight years and then I was raised in Indiana until my growing years. Seventeen, I was on my own and then come the war.     UTAH STATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY Pearl Harbor’s Forgotten Hero: The Story of the USS Utah By THOMAS O’BRIEN he Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, left 2,403 Americans dead, 188 planes destroyed, and 8 battleships damaged or sunk. As legacies of that tragic day in world history, Tthe hulls of two battleships—the USS Arizona and the USS Utah—remain in the waters of Pearl Harbor. The USS Arizona Memorial on the east side of Ford Island is the most visited World War II site in the Pacific. However, on the opposite side of Pearl Harbor’s Ford Island, only a few visitors make their way to the memorial to the USS Utah where fifty- eight men lost their lives after the once proud battleship was hit by an aeri- al torpedo at 8:01 a.m. and capsized about ten minutes later.This paper will outline the history of the USS Utah and offer recollections of seamen on board the vessel when it and other ships were attacked at Pearl Harbor on what President Franklin D. Roosevelt called “a day that will live in infamy.” The construction of the Utah was part of an early twentieth century arms race that occurred at a time when global military supremacy was determined by control of the seas. The rise of the battleship as the super weapon of the world’s navies had roots in the era of wooden vessels, but commenced in earnest with the combat between the USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia (Merrimack), during the American Civil War.

Although Anderson gave his occupation as “none,” he was rated as “ordinary seaman” indicating that he had extensive previous maritime experience. Very little is known or has been written of the hundreds of blacks from British North America who served in the Union navy during the Civil War. The best general or regional studies of Canadian involvement in the Civil War, such as Robin Winks’ Canada and the United States: The Civil War Years or Greg Marquis’ In Armageddon’s Shadow, give little more than brief anecdotes of black involvement in the war, especially in the naval war.2 None attempt, in any systematic way, to measure the number of men who volunteered.

The inspiration for attempting this occurred several years earlier when a colleague informed me of letters written by former students serving in the military during World War II to Dr. Lauren Post (right), a popular geography professor and football coach. Post’s brainchild was a newsletter, the only one of its kind in the nation, that was distributed worldwide and kept this group of alumni in contact with one another and with those left behind on the homefront. It is the often poignant, deliberately understated experiences told in the letters by young men and women, many of whom soon perished, that demands a retelling to this and future generations. Early in the project, I began to investigate the lives of a few of the fallen heroes listed on the university’s war monument in order to have some examples to cite in an essay, but as I looked closely at the abbreviated life of one deceased person after another the more I was fascinated with each of them as individuals.
