  • The Urgency for the Acquisition of the Danish
THE URGENCY FOR THE ACQUISITION OF THE DANISH WEST INDIES By Aimery Caron Presented to the Caribbean Genealogy Library on the occasion of the 97th anniversary of Transfer Day March 31, 2014 ABSTRACT. Unlike 1867, 1890 and 1902, in 1916, already two years into World War I, the US Navy was not looking for an added coaling station or naval base in the Caribbean. However, since 1902, it had been clear to Admiral George DEWEY that Kaiser WILHELM II coveted the Danish West Indies to be used as a naval base, through which he could exert military and political power in the Caribbean. After the improvements made to the St. Thomas Harbor facilities just prior to World War I, and Admiral von Tirpitz’ U-boat campaign to sink all commercial and naval ships aiding the Allies, it became obvious that the Hamburg-American Line facilities in St. Thomas Harbor might be used as a U-boat supply base for the control of maritime traffic in the Caribbean and the Mid-Atlantic. Aware of this serious German threat, Admiral DEWEY convinced President Woodrow WILSON and the US Congress that the acquisition of the Danish West Indies was a matter of great urgency. He should be credited for speeding the sale negotiations, which successfully ended on 4 August 1916, for persuading the US Senate to ratify the treaty only a month later, and for saving the Caribbean from the scourge of German U-boats during World War I. EARLY INTERESTS IN THE DANISH WEST INDIES The US Purchase Attempt of 1867 On January 7, 1865, US Secretary of State William H.

  • United States Navy and World War I: 1914–1922
Cover: During World War I, convoys carried almost two million men to Europe. In this 1920 oil painting “A Fast Convoy” by Burnell Poole, the destroyer USS Allen (DD-66) is shown escorting USS Leviathan (SP-1326). Throughout the course of the war, Leviathan transported more than 98,000 troops. Naval History and Heritage Command 1 United States Navy and World War I: 1914–1922 Frank A. Blazich Jr., PhD Naval History and Heritage Command Introduction This document is intended to provide readers with a chronological progression of the activities of the United States Navy and its involvement with World War I as an outside observer, active participant, and victor engaged in the war’s lingering effects in the postwar period. The document is not a comprehensive timeline of every action, policy decision, or ship movement. What is provided is a glimpse into how the 20th century’s first global conflict influenced the Navy and its evolution throughout the conflict and the immediate aftermath. The source base is predominately composed of the published records of the Navy and the primary materials gathered under the supervision of Captain Dudley Knox in the Historical Section in the Office of Naval Records and Library. A thorough chronology remains to be written on the Navy’s actions in regard to World War I. The nationality of all vessels, unless otherwise listed, is the United States. All errors and omissions are solely those of the author. 1st Quarter 2007 "Rest well, yet sleep lightly and hear the call, if again sounded, to provide firepower for freedom…” THE JERSEYMAN 5 Years - Nr. 53 USS NEW JERSEY Primerman - Turret Two... “I was a primerman left gun, and for a short time, in right gun of turret two on the New Jersey. In fact there was a story written by Stars and Stripes on the gun room I worked in about July or August 1986. But to your questions, yes we wore a cartridge belt, the belt was stored in a locker in the turret, and the gun captain filled the belts. After the gun was loaded with rounds, six bags of powder (large bags were 110 lbs. each) and lead foil, the gun elevated down to the platform in the pit where loaded, and the primer was about the same size as a 30-30 brass cartridge. After I loaded the primer I would give the gun captain a "Thumbs up," the gun captain then pushed a button to let them know that the gun was loaded and ready to fire. After three tones sounded, the gun fired, the gun captain opened the breech and the empty primer fell Primer cartridge courtesy of Volunteer into the pit. Our crew could have a gun ready to fire Turret Captain Marty Waltemyer about every 27 seconds. All communicating was done by hand instructions only, and that was due to the noise in the turret. The last year I was in the turrets I was also a powder hoist operator...” Shane Broughten, former BM2 Skyberg, Minnesota USS NEW JERSEY 1984-1987 2nd Div.

  • Additional Historic Information the Doolittle Raid (Hornet CV-8) Compiled and Written by Museum Historian Bob Fish
USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum Additional Historic Information The Doolittle Raid (Hornet CV-8) Compiled and Written by Museum Historian Bob Fish AMERICA STRIKES BACK The Doolittle Raid of April 18, 1942 was the first U.S. air raid to strike the Japanese home islands during WWII. The mission is notable in that it was the only operation in which U.S. Army Air Forces bombers were launched from an aircraft carrier into combat. The raid demonstrated how vulnerable the Japanese home islands were to air attack just four months after their surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. While the damage inflicted was slight, the raid significantly boosted American morale while setting in motion a chain of Japanese military events that were disastrous for their long-term war effort. Planning & Preparation Immediately after the Pearl Harbor attack, President Roosevelt tasked senior U.S. military commanders with finding a suitable response to assuage the public outrage. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a difficult assignment. The Army Air Forces had no bases in Asia close enough to allow their bombers to attack Japan. At the same time, the Navy had no airplanes with the range and munitions capacity to do meaningful damage without risking the few ships left in the Pacific Fleet. In early January of 1942, Captain Francis Low1, a submariner on CNO Admiral Ernest King’s staff, visited Norfolk, VA to review the Navy’s newest aircraft carrier, USS Hornet CV-8. During this visit, he realized that Army medium-range bombers might be successfully launched from an aircraft carrier.

  • Danny Casolaro & the Octopus
12/12/2020 Danny Casolaro & The Octopus - Suicide or Assassination? Welcome to DarkIdeas.net DANNY CASOLARO & THE OCTOPUS The story of Danny Casolaro’s investigation into what he termed ‘The Octopus’ is strange and fragmented. There is divided opinion on whether he knew what he was uncovering when he stumbled upon the threads that pulled the tentacles together. Conversely, there is almost no divided opinion on the cause of his death. Privacy https://darkideas.net/true-crime-articles/assassinated/danny-casolaro-the-octopus/ 1/20 12/12/2020 Danny Casolaro & The Octopus - Suicide or Assassination? Why would it be in anyone’s interest for a failing writer to be ‘suicided’ ? In Danny Casolaro’s own words, from the early pages of his draft book: They are not government officials but their tentacles can reach into any part of government in almost any country including legitimate and rogue spy networks. They are not notable industrialists but they can pull the strings of the oil and banking empires at will. They are not known criminals but they have successfully penetrated all factions of organized crime including the Mafia, the Japanese Yakuza, the secret Chinese societies and the terrorist underground. With its tag-team compartments, its exploitation of hundreds of people and its formidable stealth, The Octopus will help to unravel the most compelling puzzles of the twentieth century. Know your prey Perhaps his mistake was not that he didn’t realise what he was getting into; it was that he didn’t understand what he was hunting. When leaving for his ill-fated trip to Martinsburg, he proclaimed in a phone call : “I am going to bring back the head of The Octopus.” But what he had uncovered was not just an octopus; it was a Hydra.
