Surgery at Sea: An Analysis of Shipboard Medical Practitioners and Their Instrumentation By Robin P. Croskery Howard April, 2016 Director of Thesis: Dr. Lynn Harris Major Department: Maritime Studies, History Abstract: Shipboard life has long been of interest to maritime history and archaeology researchers. Historical research into maritime medical practices, however, rarely uses archaeological data to support its claims. The primary objective of this thesis is to incorporate data sets from the medical assemblages of two shipwreck sites and one museum along with historical data into a comparative analysis. Using the methods of material culture theory and pattern recognition, this thesis will explore changes in western maritime medical practices as compared to land-based practices over time. TIMELINE Søren Larsen © James D Parbery 2020-2021 this edition 22 March 2021 The Danes have been building wooden ships since long before the Viking Era (c.790-1100 AD) and passing on skills from father to son while refining the method and ship design through the centuries. The principal building material, oak, was seriously depleted in most European countries by the late 19th century except in Denmark where oak forests were well managed at the initiative of King Frederich VI 1768 – 1839. Consequently wooden ship building in Denmark continued well into the 20th century. Søren Larsen, launched in 1948, was one of the last of these ships built in the 20th century for commercial cargo - a Baltic trader or sejlede paket (sailing packet) as the Danes called it. The builders, Søren Larsen og Sønners, named the ship after themselves as she was exceptionally well built and the last of a kind - a ship they could name with pride. Søren Larsen now has a rich history spanning almost seventy-five years and has sailed every ocean. She is in excellent condition, still sailing, currently based in Sydney, Australia. Mines had been laid throughout the Danish sea lanes during the war and these remain a hazard to shipping, with a significant loss of life until at least 1950 when all mines were finally cleared. -

The Effect of 17Th-Century Naval Ordnance on Ship Structure

Ships, shot and splinters: the effect of 17th-century naval ordnance on ship structure Abstract In 2014 the Friends of the Vasa Museum carried out live firing trials of an accurate replica of the main ordnance system used on the Swedish warship Vasa, sunk in 1628. The purpose of the trials was to assess the ballistic performance of this type of lightweight 24-pounder bronze gun, its effect on ship structure and the ergonomic aspects of servicing the piece. This article reports on the effect aspects of the trials, with specific attention to the affect that the details of ship structure have on the creation and dispersion of splinters inside the ship. Introduction The conventional impression of the nature of naval centimetres of oak that a shot of a given size could penetrate warfare in the age of sail and broadside gunnery is one with a given charge. (December 2005) Gustavo Adolfo Garcia, B.S.C.E., Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. Luis F. Vieira de Castro On 30 December 1986, a local fisherman incidentally discovered the remains of a seventeenth-century merchantman off the coast of Rincón, a small municipality on Puerto Rico’s west coast. Some days later, he and some acquaintances extracted objects from the site and stored them in a nearby restaurant. The assemblage of artifacts recovered included, among others, pins, scissors, ordnance, pewter ware, woodworking tools, a myriad of concretions and a nautical astrolabe. It is from the latter that the wreck site took its name. The operation continued for months until local authorities, alerted by a member of the salvage group, issued a cease and desist order. At that point, the whole affair entered a legal process that on the summer of 2005 had not reached its conclusion.
