Dis die mens wat van belang is, en nie sy fraiings nie. ~ Hennie Aucamp ~ Pluk die dag (1994) ii OPSOMMING Hennie Aucamp: ʼn gerontologiese oeuvrestudie Die ekstensiewe en diverse oeuvre van Hennie Aucamp word afgesluit met sy dood op 20 Maart 2014 en is derhalwe gereed om benader te word vanuit nuwe perspektiewe soos die gerontologie wat die bestudering van veroudering is. Die oorspronklike bydrae van hierdie proefskrif setel in die daarstel van ʼn gerontologiese benadering tot die literêre werke van Hennie Aucamp met verwysing na die literêre gerontologie, narratiewe gerontologie, queergerontologie en intergenerasionele verhoudings. Gemeet aan die omvang van sy oeuvre is daar relatief min navorsing oor Aucamp gedoen en geeneen van die bestaande studies benader sy literêre werke uitsluitlik vanuit ʼn gerontologiese perspektief óf ondersoek sy volledige oeuvre nie. Die onderskeie literêre tekste van Aucamp, en die konvensies van die genres waarin daardie tekste geskryf is, het die ontleding en interpretasie gelei. Benewens die literêre tekste as estetiese objekte wat op komplekse maniere weerspieëlings van die werklikheid is, is relevante egodokumente van Aucamp ook betrek ten einde ʼn meer geskakeerde insig te bied in sy literêre oeuvre en meer spesifiek in die manier waarop die gerontologie en aanverwante temas deur hom hanteer word. Vanuit beide die literêre tekste en egodokumente het heelwat perspektiewe op die veroudering van queer seniors na vore gekom en hierdie queergerontologiese beskouing is ʼn belangrike bydrae omdat die stem van veral die senior queer selde in/deur die Afrikaanse letterkunde weerklink. Literêr-gerontologiese temas en verhoudings wat in Aucamp se literêre tekste uitgebeeld word sluit in biologiese aftakeling weens veroudering; die spieël as tegniek om ʼn konfrontasie met die effekte van veroudering te bewerkstellig; die verskil tussen mentale en chronologiese ouderdom; die toedig van spesifieke eienskappe aan spesifieke ouderdomme; die rol van herinnering by die senior; die sosiale isolering van seniors; (queer) manlike ervaring van veroudering; die ouerwordende kunstenaar se belewing van veroudering; intergenerasionele verhoudings wat romanties, familiaal, platonies, heteroseksueel, homoseksueel of verskillende kombinasies hiervan kan wees; vriendskappe en verhoudings tussen seniors; die gebruik van kuns, en die idealisering van skoonheid en jeug, om veroudering en verganklikheid te probeer besweer; seniors se jaloesie op die jeug van jonger mense; praktiese sake wat verband hou met iii veroudering; die tehuis vir seniors as literêre ruimte waarin veroudering uitspeel; en die essay as brug tussen die literêre en narratiewe gerontologie. Egodokumente van Aucamp wat die literêre ontledings en interpretasies aangevul het sluit in dagboeke, onderhoude, briefwisselings, essays, literêre kritiek wat deur hom geskryf is en bloemlesings van akademiese tekste deur homself en ander literati. Hierdie dokumente bevestig dat daar deurgaans by Aucamp ʼn diepe bewustheid van veroudering, ouderdom en die algemene menslike toestand bestaan het. Hy hanteer die subjektiwiteit van veroudering op verskillende maniere en met die lees van sy egodokumente verkry die leser insig in sy eie verouderingsproses en die manier waarop Aucamp (as skrywer en persoon) dit hanteer het. Wat die uitbeelding van die queerbelewenis van veroudering en ouderdom betref, is dit duidelik dat Aucamp op baie spesifieke maniere te werk gegaan het om met deernis en begrip die gemarginaliseerde subjektiwiteit van hierdie belewing in die kollektiewe bewussyn van die Afrikaanse letterkunde te vestig. Dit is veral die homoseksuele intergenerasionele verhouding tussen senior en jonger mans wat in Aucamp se oeuvre van naderby verken word om die kompleksiteite van queerveroudering uit te wys. Queergerontologie is ʼn resente ontwikkeling binne die gerontologie wat daarop fokus om bestaande idees rondom die veroudering van queer mense te bestudeer, dit te ondermyn en alternatiewe voor te stel. Die interseksie tussen veroudering en seksualiteit word verpersoonlik deur die ouerwordende queer, en die belewing van queerveroudering word treffend deur Aucamp in sy literêre tekste verken en ge(de)konstrueer. Die literêre gerontologie, narratiewe gerontologie en queergerontologie is betreklik onderontginde teoretiese benaderings wat in hierdie proefskrif op ʼn eksperimentele manier met literêre ontledings en interpretasies vervleg word ten einde nuwe insigte te verkry in die manier waarop gerontologiese temas deur Aucamp benader word. Intergenerasionele verhoudings en die konsep van laatwerk/laatstyl verskaf verdere perspektiewe op die manier waarop veroudering en letterkunde met mekaar verband hou. Die idees van teoretici soos Anne Wyatt-Brown, Hannah Zeilig, Mike Hepworth, Jan Baars, Paul Ricoeur, Jesus Ramirez-Valles en Michel Foucault is gebruik om ʼn teoretiese raamwerk daar te stel. The original contribution of this thesis resides in proposing a gerontological approach to the literary works of Hennie Aucamp with reference to literary gerontology, narrative gerontology, queer gerontology and intergenerational relations. Compared to the scope of his oeuvre there is a relative dearth of research on Aucamp and none of the existing studies approach his literary oeuvre from a gerontological perspective exclusively or investigate his complete oeuvre. The respective literary texts of Aucamp, and conventions of the genres in which the texts have been written, guided the analysis and interpretation. In addition to the literary texts as aesthetic objects, which in complex ways are reflections of reality, relevant ego- documents by Aucamp were also included to give a more variegated insight into his literary oeuvre and more specifically the ways in which he explores gerontology and related themes. The present author's new translation of Leroux's prize- winning novel Sewe Dae by die Silbersteins (1962) is the focal point of an enquiry into how “rewriting”, in translation theorist André Lefevere's coinage, has shaped the reception of Leroux's work outside the Afrikaans literary system. It is shown from a literary-histori- ographical viewpoint that translation played a crucial role in Leroux's rise to international prominence and subsequent eclipse. It is demonstrated that Leroux's standing within the English literary system rests predominantly on extant translations of his novels, without taking into account the cyclical quality of his fiction, especially the overarching nine-novel cycle – the basis of Leroux's renown in Afrikaans. The distortions produced by this fact are critiqued. In particular, the received idea of Leroux as an apolitical obscurantist is chal- lenged, the work of J.C.

Abstract Since the transition from apartheid, there has been much discussion of the possibilities for the emergence of a truly ‘national’ literature in South Africa. This thesis joins the debate by arguing that Black Consciousness, a movement that began in the late 1960s, provided the intellectual framework both for understanding how a national culture would develop and for recognising it when it emerged. Black Consciousness posited a South Africa where formerly competing cultures sat comfortably together. This thesis explores whether such cultural equality has been achieved. Does contemporary literature harmoniously deploy different cultural idioms simultaneously? By analysing Black writing, mainly poetry, from the 1970s through to the present, the study traces the stages of development preceding the emergence of a possible ‘national’ literature and argues that the dominant art versus politics binary needs to be reconsidered.

He studied Law at Stellenbosch University (BA, LLB) and worked for a short time at a solicitor's office in Bloemfontein. From 1946 he farmed and lived as a writer Etienne Leroux is the nom de plume of Stephanus Daniël Petrus le Roux. He was born on 13 June 1922 in Oudtshoorn where he spent his early childhood. His father was a politician and later Minister of agriculture. Etienne and Renée were divorced in 1969. Etienne was married to the pianist, Elizabeth Joubert. Mokoena Abstract If South Africa’s intellectual history is defined in generational terms then it is possible to speak of a “generation gap” in the history of political and social ideas. Whereas in the 1940s, the elitist and qui- escent leadership of the African National Congress was jostled into action by the “Young Lions” of the Youth League; and whereas the literary opposition to apartheid was led from within the Afrikaner/ Afrikaans community by the Sestigers—“the Generation of the Sixties”—“youth” in South Africa today is not synonymous with political and philosophical innovation. This paper will explore the problems of “youthfulness” and “rejuvenation” in South African political thought by describing the ways in which the “Born Frees” could conceive an intellectual “manifesto,” as both an alternative to the post-apartheid “death of ideas” and as a revision of the his- toriography on “youth” that has been the foundation of narratives about the young since the 1976 Soweto uprising. Even philosophers are young men for a time. They must be born somewhere, some time and begin to think and write.

    LitNet Akademies Jaargang 13, Nommer 2, 2016, ISSN 1995-5928 Van Calvinisme tot Romantiek: Die invloed van die Bybel op die skrywerskap van Hennie Aucamp Lina Spies Lina Spies, Departement Afrikaans en Nederlands, Universiteit Stellenbosch Opsomming Hierdie artikel is die resultaat van my belangstelling in die neerslag van die Bybel en die godsdiens in die Afrikaanse letterkunde en spesifiek in die werk van Hennie Aucamp. Aucamp se omvattende oeuvre sluit sy groot kortverhaaloeuvre in, sy kabaret- en liedtekste, sy dagboeke en memoires. In sy memoires in In die vroegte (2003) skryf hy oor die sentrale rol van die Bybel en huisgodsdiens in die tipiese Afrikanergesin waarbinne hy grootgeword het. Ek bepaal my hoofsaaklik by Aucamp se kortverhaaloeuvre. In dié verband bespreek ek twee verhale uit sy debuut, Een somermiddag, waarin sy alter ego, die kind Wimpie, se skuld- en sondebesef ’n spelbederwer is. Twee personasies verteenwoordig in sy tweede bundel, Spitsuur, die buitestander wat breek met die tradisionele godsdiens van die Afrikanergemeenskap (“Au claire de la lune”) en die ek-spreker as reisiger (“My tante wat in Chelsea woon”), wat die voorloper is van die reisende romantikus en van die prominente romantiese en dekadente argetipes in Aucamp se latere werk. Hierdie argetipes is teenpole van die Bybelsgevormde Stormbergse boere in Aucamp se werk wat hy herskep as geesverwante van die wyse manne van Spreuke en Prediker. Waar Aucamp in sy memoires die lewensgevoel in sy kabaret- en liedtekste toeskryf aan die invloed van Prediker en ’n verband lê tussen die Prediker en Eugène Marais, kom ek tot die gevolgtrekking dat Aucamp se dekadentistiese sinisme inderdaad aansluit by die lewensgevoel van die digter van Prediker en van Eugène Marais.

    Carol van der Westhuizen School of Teacher Training, Groenkloof Campus, University of Pretoria Judging the book This article focuses on the extrinsic factors ABSTRACTcontributing to the popularity of novels in general and Dalene Matthee's Afrikaans "forest" novels in particular. Any group of agents involved in the production, dissemination and promotion of fiction comprises a literary institution. These literary institutions regulate the complex process of classifying and valuing a text as "literary fiction". The collective body of literary institutions constitutes the literary system in which each institution influences the way literature is viewed. Literary institutions perform a social function as "gatekeepers" between the book and its audience, thus influencing its publication and reception. Keywords: novel, literary fiction, institutional approach 1. Introduction: The distinction between "high" and "low" texts The distinction between "high" and "low" or literary and popular texts has long been debated. Literary scholars nowadays seem to advocate the view that serious and popular literature are categories in the same literary system and should be regarded as parallel categories which differ from each other in many respects but also have several characteristics in common (Malan 1983; Barsch 1996; Sutherland 2002). Moreover, Barsch (1996: 696) contends that "dealing with literature in the classroom has to be put on another foundation" as there is no "automatic developmental sequence for reading from 'low' to 'high'". Literary scholars' and teachers' acceptance of "different, but functionally equivalent concepts of literature" would give equal significance to both "high" and "low" literature. The teacher's role is crucial in educating learners to deal with literature at school, as it "is likely to influence the way they look at and act on literature outside school and in later life" (Janssen & Rijlaarsdam 1996: 513).
