Innocents in Africa?
Innocents in Africa? - Tony McGregor* reviewing Antjie Krog’s “Begging to be Black” “...picking my confused way through a world where there existed not one, but two sources of light. My perception is still confused by double shadows from those twin suns. I would never say that my perception is African. But Africa is lodged in my perception all the same.” - from Innocents in Africa by Drury Pifer (Granta, 1994). Being white in Africa is a very confused way, a way that one has to tread through very carefully. Because the light from the two suns casts different shadows, and I, for one, am continually having to make some choices between one sun and the other. Do I take my time and direction from the African sun which burns and scorches with an unpredictable urgent life, or do I take my time and direction from the European sun with its comfortable, relatively predictable cultural answers to all the questions that life, in Africa, no less than in Europe, throws at one from moment to moment. When I first arrived at the University of Stellenbosch back in the early 1960s I had to be interviewed by the house committee of the residence in which I was going to be staying. I was asked my name, which, when I gave it, was greeted with the rather rude expostulation: “O, nog 'n fokken soutpiel!” Which, being translated, means, “O, another effing salt-penis!” The term “soutpiel” is a derogatory name for Englishmen and comes from the saying of [Afrikaans-speaking white South Africans] that Englishmen have one foot in Europe and one in Africa, leaving their penises to hang in the sea between the two continents. -

Designing the South African Nation from Nature to Culture
CHAPTER 3 Designing the South African Nation From Nature to Culture Jacques Lange and Jeanne van Eeden There is to date very little published research and writing about South African design history. One of the main obstacles has been dealing with the legacy of forty years of apartheid censorship (1950 to 1990) that banned and destroyed a vast array of visual culture in the interests of propaganda and national security, according to the Beacon for Freedom of Expression (http://search.beaconforfreedom.org/about_database/south%20africa.html). This paucity of material is aggravated by the general lack of archival and doc- umentary evidence, not just of the struggle against apartheid, but also of the wider domain of design in South Africa. Even mainstream designed mate- rial for the British imperialist and later apartheid government has been lost or neglected in the inadequate archival facilities of the State and influential organizations such as the South African Railways. Efforts to redress this are now appearing as scholars start to piece together fragments, not in order to write a definitive history of South African design, but rather to write histories of design in South Africa that recuperate neglected narratives or revise earlier historiographies. This chapter is accordingly an attempt to document a number of key moments in the creation of South African nationhood between 1910 and 2013 in which communication design played a part. Our point of departure is rooted in Zukin’s (1991: 16) belief that symbolic and material manifestations of power harbour the ideological needs of powerful institutions to manipulate class, gender and race relations, ultimately to serve the needs of capital (and governance). -

Odendaal The Poetic Utilization of Dialectal Varieties of the Afrikaans Language for Strategic Purposes in the Southern African Context Abstract: Afrikaans is a southern African language named after the continent on which it has evolved from seventeenth-century Dutch in a complex contact situa- tion between European settlers, their imported slaves, and indigenous peoples. It was standardized in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries for literary purposes, among others. The poetic utilization of dialectal or colloquial varieties of Afrikaans, however, has been an important trend in its literary history, espe- cially since the advent of the so-called Movement of the 1960s. The relevant vari- eties include geolects like Karoo Afrikaans, but also sociolects like “Loslitafri- kaans” (informal Afrikaans, characterized by being mixed with English), Cape Afrikaans, and Griqua Afrikaans. As a stylistic device, the use of dialectal Afri- kaans has served both literary-strategic purposes (literary renewal) and socio-po- litical aims (as actuality literature or socio-politically engaged poetry). As a whole, it transpires that the pressing socio-political and broader cultural condi- tions that have dictated past developments, or are driving present ones, in South and southern Africa (resistance to nineteenth-century efforts at anglicizing south- ern Africa, the advent and decline of Apartheid, the increasingly hegemonic posi- tion of English in the post-Apartheid dispensation) loom large behind the relative importance of this trend in Afrikaans poetry. The present author's new translation of Leroux's prize- winning novel Sewe Dae by die Silbersteins (1962) is the focal point of an enquiry into how “rewriting”, in translation theorist André Lefevere's coinage, has shaped the reception of Leroux's work outside the Afrikaans literary system. It is shown from a literary-histori- ographical viewpoint that translation played a crucial role in Leroux's rise to international prominence and subsequent eclipse. It is demonstrated that Leroux's standing within the English literary system rests predominantly on extant translations of his novels, without taking into account the cyclical quality of his fiction, especially the overarching nine-novel cycle – the basis of Leroux's renown in Afrikaans. The distortions produced by this fact are critiqued. In particular, the received idea of Leroux as an apolitical obscurantist is chal- lenged, the work of J.C. -

African Studies Quarterly | Volume 13, Issue 4 | Winter 2013 BOOK REVIEWS David Attwell and Derek Attridge (eds.). 2012. The Cambridge History of South African Literature. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press. xvii, 877 pp. The Cambridge History of South African Literature is a veritable gold mine. Its organization is intelligent and coherent, and its range and coverage is appropriately encyclopedic. The individual essays that make up the collection are without exception extraordinarily well informed; they are lucid in expression and organization, and they frequently provoke thought well beyond the boundaries of the dense, summative survey-form that the volume’s form imposes on them. Editors Attwell and Attridge have marshaled the very best specialists for each of the chapters, scholars who have written the definitive monograph on the topic, built the most comprehensive web-site, edited the definitive journal, or otherwise been a dominant voice in their sub-field. Thus we have, for example, (picking more or less at random from the volume’s six sections) Nhlanhle Maake’s unparalleled insights into Sesotho lifela (songs), Carli Coetzee’s delving into the seventeenth-century VOC (Dutch East India Company) archives and their use by contemporary writers, Laura Chrisman’s compendious discussion of the imperial romance, Ntongela Masilela’s densely illustrated description of the New African movement, Hein Willemse’s account of Afrikaans literature between 1948 and 1976, and Peter McDonald’s remarkably comprehensive summary of the history of the book in South Africa. Attwell and Attridge deserve particular credit not just for lining up such an outstanding array of scholars but also for letting their subject-specialists speak for themselves. -

Through an analytical-discursive engagement with their work, it explores the relationship between confession and embodiment, drawing attention to the ethical potential located at the confluence of these theories and modes. The theory informing this thesis is drawn from three broad fields: that of feminism, embodiment studies and ethical philosophy. More specifically, foundational insights will come from the work of Simone de Beauvoir, Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Emmanuel Levinas. While much of the theory used originates from Western Europe and North America, this will be mediated by sensitivity towards Krog and Metelerkamp’s South African location, as is fitting for a study focused on embodied confession and the ethical treatment of the other. -
