We assume that the failure of a function is linked with a system internal state transition. It is then possible to model the sequencing of different possible states, and by this means different functional failures which lead to critical feared states, thus, taking into account the random nature of the occurring failures. The approach presented is explained using an extended stochastic petri net with switching time to model the failure behavior of a cognitive walker.
