Vascular Plant Survey of Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve, Malawi
YIKA-VWAZA TRUST RESEARCH STUDY REPORT N (2017/18) Vascular Plant Survey of Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve, Malawi By Sopani Sichinga ([email protected]) September , 2019 ABSTRACT In 2018 – 19, a survey on vascular plants was conducted in Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve. The reserve is located in the north-western Malawi, covering an area of about 986 km2. Based on this survey, a total of 461 species from 76 families were recorded (i.e. 454 Angiosperms and 7 Pteridophyta). Of the total species recorded, 19 are exotics (of which 4 are reported to be invasive) while 1 species is considered threatened. The most dominant families were Fabaceae (80 species representing 17. 4%), Poaceae (53 species representing 11.5%), Rubiaceae (27 species representing 5.9 %), and Euphorbiaceae (24 species representing 5.2%). The annotated checklist includes scientific names, habit, habitat types and IUCN Red List status and is presented in section 5. i ACKNOLEDGEMENTS First and foremost, let me thank the Nyika–Vwaza Trust (UK) for funding this work. The Silte of southern Ethiopia is among those ethnic groups with their own conflict resolution mechanism. The main purpose of this study is to explore the indigenous institutions of conflict resolution among the Silte people of southern Ethiopia. This study has employed a qualitative research to meet the stated objectives of the study. To achieve the above objectives, the study collected primary data from different informants in Silte Woreda by employing such qualitative data collection techniques as an interview, focus group discussions and observation. The secondary data sources were obtained from published and unpublished government documents; such as books and magazine and. The finding of this research reveals that the indigenous conflict resolution institution is one of the ways of resolving conflict in the study area. The study also came up with the major causes of conflict in the study area and the indigenous means to resolve them through the Baliq conflict resolution institution. -
Early Growth and Survival of Different Woody Plant Species Established Through Direct Sowing in a Degraded Land, Southern Ethiopia

The objectives of this study paper were (1) evaluate the growth, biomass and survival of different woody plant species established through direct seeding in a semi-arid degraded land; (2) identify woody plant species that could be further used for restoration of degraded lands. To achieve the objectives eight woody plant species seeds were gathered, their seeds were sown in a degraded land, in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) (n=4). Data on germination, growth and survival of the different woody plants were collected at regular intervals during an eleven-month period. At the end of the study period, the remaining woody plants' dry biomasses were assessed. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used for the data analysis and mean separation was performed using Fisher’s least significant difference (LSD) test (p=0.05). The result revealed significant differences on the mean heights, root length, root collar diameters, root to shoot ratio, dry root biomasses and dry shoot biomasses of the different species (p < 0.05). -
Specificity in Legume-Rhizobia Symbioses

Gresshoff and Brett Ferguson Received: 12 February 2017; Accepted: 21 March 2017; Published: 26 March 2017 Abstract: Most species in the Leguminosae (legume family) can fix atmospheric nitrogen (N2) via symbiotic bacteria (rhizobia) in root nodules. Here, the literature on legume-rhizobia symbioses in field soils was reviewed and genotypically characterised rhizobia related to the taxonomy of the legumes from which they were isolated. The Leguminosae was divided into three sub-families, the Caesalpinioideae, Mimosoideae and Papilionoideae. Bradyrhizobium spp. were the exclusive rhizobial symbionts of species in the Caesalpinioideae, but data are limited. Generally, a range of rhizobia genera nodulated legume species across the two Mimosoideae tribes Ingeae and Mimoseae, but Mimosa spp. show specificity towards Burkholderia in central and southern Brazil, Rhizobium/Ensifer in central Mexico and Cupriavidus in southern Uruguay. These specific symbioses are likely to be at least in part related to the relative occurrence of the potential symbionts in soils of the different regions. Generally, Papilionoideae species were promiscuous in relation to rhizobial symbionts, but specificity for rhizobial genus appears to hold at the tribe level for the Fabeae (Rhizobium), the genus level for Cytisus (Bradyrhizobium), Lupinus (Bradyrhizobium) and the New Zealand native Sophora spp. (Mesorhizobium) and species level for Cicer arietinum (Mesorhizobium), Listia bainesii (Methylobacterium) and Listia angolensis (Microvirga). -

1. ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND 1.1. Establishment / Organizational Aspiration: Love In Action Ethiopia/LIA-E/ is an indigenous, not-for-profit, non-governmental charitable organization established and registered in 2001 with the ministry of Justice and re-registered on October 30, 2009 with Charities and Societies Agency of Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia as an Ethiopian Residents Charity. Love In Action Ethiopia was established with a view to serving the poorest, underserved, most vulnerable, most at risk, and marginalized segments of the population; including children, youth and women. Over the years, LIAE has grown to serve its target beneficiaries through participatory development programs focusing on creating access to quality educations for children and adults; HIV/AIDS prevention, care and support; and capacity development. All through its periods of struggles, LIAE has grown beyond simply raising awareness and developing skills into rendering more sustainable and meaningful solutions for the multifaceted socio-economic problems of the community and in turn start to save life of the generation. 1.2. VISION: Love In Action Ethiopia aspires to see improved life in the rural (remote) and urban areas by the effort of the people themselves, and with the minimum external intervention. 1.3. MISSION: LIA Ethiopia is committed to bring sustainable change and transformation among the society through concerned effort of the community and genuine participation of all stakeholders. LIA Ethiopia, at its heart of activities promotes peoples’ awareness so as to enable them participate meaningfully and practically in the development processes of their locality, region and nation. 1.4. Acacia What’s in a name? Acacia is an Australian icon. It’s up there with emus and kangaroos! It’s our national floral emblem! We celebrate National Wattle Day and our international sporting teams compete in gold and green. How is it then that we came so close to losing the name Acacia for our wattle trees? And yet, until the International Botanical Congress in Melbourne, 2011, this almost happened. The controversy starts with the International Code of Nomenclature for Algae, Fungi and Plants, a set of rules agreed by the world’s scientific community to manage the names of these organisms. There are about 1,300 species in what has been known until recently as the genus Acacia including ~ 1,000 from Australia, ~ 150 from Africa, and a few from south-east Asia and the Americas. The first Acacia to be named was an African species, Acacia scorpioides (syn. A. nilotica), which, according to the International Code, then Acacia longifolia – Sydney Golden Wattle, became the type species for the genus from eastern and southern Australia. Acacia. However, in recent years, botanists determined that there were sufficient differences between groups of Acacia species to separate the genus into five genera. According to the tradition the origin of the name “Koshe” is originated from the plant which called by the name Koshe which abundantly grow in the area. The establishment of Koshe town is directly associated with the five years Italian occupation. Due to the expansion of patriotic movement in the area Italian officials of the area forced to establish additional camp in the area in a particular place Koshe. This paper explores the role of Fascist Italy for the establishment of Koshe town. The former weekly market shifted its location and established around the Italian camp. Following the evacuation of Fascist Italy the Ethiopian governments control the area. During the government of Emperor Haile Selassie Koshe town got some important developmental programs.
