This study was conducted in a fragment of deciduous seasonal forest (DSF), located between the municipalities of Piratuba and Ipira, Santa Catarina. The objective was to evaluate the floristic composition and the successional stage through the ecological groups, the Shannon diversity index (H') and the dispersal syndromes of species, also using the H' and the McGinnies index (IGA) to determine the pattern of spatial distribution of species. 14 transects were installed, each with 1,000 m2, considering all trees with Diameter at Breast Hight (DBH) ≤ 4.0 cm. In total, 2,125 individuals were sampled, belonging to 113 species and 34 families. Myrtaceae and Fabaceae were the families with the highest species richness, with 14.2% and 11.5%, respectively. Euphorbiaceae and Lauraceae added approximately 25% of the individuals. The most abundant species were Actiniostemon concolor (Spreng.) Müll. -

The entire plant possesses pharmaceutical constituents of great significance. The present article gives an update on bioactive compounds and medicinal importance of Albizia amara. This plant has been used as an important folk medicine for the treatment of several diseases like diarrhea, gonorrhea, skin diseases, poisonous bites and leprosy. Further, phytochemical investigation revealed the presence of wide variety of bioactive compounds such as macrocyclic spermine alkaloids, triterpene saponins, phenols, flavonyl glycosides, tannins, sterols in the plant extract of A. amara. In addition, the plant extract possess the pharmacological properties like anticancer, antihyperlipidimic, antiinflammatory, antimicrobial, analgesic and antioxidant activities. Because of the presence of several phytoconstituents, pharmacological activities and wide distribution, this will be an ideal plant resource for the treatment of several endemic diseases. We combine published molecular data for the chloroplast regions matK and rbcL with 66 morphological characters surveyed for 73 ingroup and two outgroup species, and use Parsimony and Bayesian approaches to explore matrices with different missing data. All combined analyses using Parsimony recovered the topology Polygalaceae (Leguminosae (Quillajaceae + Surianaceae)). Bayesian analyses with matched morphological and molecular sampling recover the same topology, but analyses based on other data recover a different Bayesian topology: ((Polygalaceae + Leguminosae) (Quillajaceae + Surianaceae)). We explore the evolution of floral characters in the context of the more consistent topology: Polygalaceae (Leguminosae (Quillajaceae + Surianaceae)). This reveals synapomorphies for (Leguminosae (Quillajaceae + Suri- anaceae)) as the presence of free filaments and marginal ⁄ ventral placentation, for (Quillajaceae + Surianaceae) as pentamery and apocarpy, and for Leguminosae the presence of an abaxial median sepal and unicarpellate gynoecium. An octamerous androecium is synapomorphic for Polygalaceae. The development of papilionate flowers, and the evolutionary context in which these phenotypes appeared in Leguminosae and Polygalaceae, shows that the morphologies are convergent rather than synapomorphic within Fabales. -

A fitossociologia florestal no Paraná: listagem bibliográfica comentada 1 Phytossociology in Parana state, southern Brazil: a commented list of papers Ingo Isernhagen 2 Sandro Menezes Silva 3 Franklin Galvão 4 Resumo A fitossociologia é o ramo da Ecologia Vegetal mais amplamente utilizado para diagnóstico quali-quantitativo das formações vegetacionais no estado do Paraná. Vários pesquisadores defendem a aplicação de seus resultados no planejamento das ações de gestão ambiental, como no manejo florestal e na recuperação de áreas degradadas. O presente trabalho apresenta uma listagem de 162 referências bibliográficas de estudos fitossociológicos realizados no Paraná, a maioria realizada após o ano de 1980. Foram disponibilizadas informações como o tipo de publicação, a localidade e a tipologia vegetacional em que os estudos foram conduzidos, método de amostragem adotado, área amostral, critério de inclusão e número de famílias e espécies encontradas. Apesar de várias semelhanças, existem entre os estudos diferenças significativas de métodos que impedem a comparação entre os resultados obtidos em uma mesma tipologia vegetacional e principalmente entre diferentes tipologias. O fato de a maioria das referências encontradas ser de resumos também dificulta as comparações, já que as informações contidas nesta categoria de publicação são bastante limitadas e possuem pouca divulgação. Sugere-se a discussão conjunta entre os pesquisadores para uma maior padronização dos métodos de análise florística-estrutural das tipologias vegetacionais paranaeneses. A influência de outras variáveis ambientais, como geopedologia e microclima, também deveriam fazer parte dos estudos desta natureza. Isto possibilitaria um entendimento mais detalhado da composição e dinâmica da vegetação e do ecossistema, garantindo um melhor embasamento das ações de gestão ambiental no Paraná. -
