• VLA DETECTS CO IN MOST DISTANT KNOWN : Astronomers using the VLA to study the most distant quasar yet found, discovered a massive reservoir of CO gas already present in an object seen as it was only 870 million after the Big Bang. The quasar, Jl 148+4251, at a of 6.4, was discovered by the earlier this . The amount of CO found indicates that, even at such an early time in the history of the Universe, already had large reservoirs of molecular gas from which new generations of could be formed. The carbon and oxygen forming the CO detected by the VLA in this object had to be formed in the cores of some of the first stars in the Universe, during the of Reionization.

FIRST DOUBLE-PULSAR BINARY SYSTEM DISCOVERED: The system, designated J0737-3039 and discovered late last year at Parkes, was further studied with the GBT. Its salient properties are 22.7 ms and 2.77 sec pulsars (A and B) a slightly eccentric orbit (~0.1), a very compact orbit (period ~ 2.5 hr) viewed nearly edge on (-88 deg), all of which make this an ideal system to conduct fundamental new tests of relativistic theories of gravity. The eclipses and flux variations during each orbit of each pulsar when coupled with geodetic precession are providing unique probes of the structure of pulsar magnetospheres, winds, and the pulsar emission mechanism. The nearly achromatic eclipse lasts for -30 seconds, ingress taking 2-3 times longer than egress. A highly accurate mass ratio of 1.068 is obtained, which combined with the measured advance of periastron and inclination angle, give 1.336 and 1.250 solar masses for A and B respectively. Future observations will determine many aspects of pulsar physics.

HIGH-VELOCITY CLOUD INTERACTING WITH THE : GBT observations of HI emission from the high-velocity cloud Complex H give clear evidence that this cloud is interacting with the Milky Way, and is thus located somewhere within the halo of the Galaxy rather than at intergalactic distances. The main features of the HI kinematics are matched by a model in which Complex H is a satellite of the Milky Way in a bound, circular, retrograde orbit inclined to the at a distance of 33 kpc from the Galactic Center. This model also reproduces the overall head-tail morphology of Complex H. Scientific Highlights mfc Observin? Jummary 2003

GAMMA-RAY OBSERVATION RULES OUT ALTERNATE MODEL: The gamma-ray burst of 29 March 2003 (GRB 030329) was the closest yet known, and was repeatedly observed with the VLB A, both alone and in conjunction with Effelsberg, the VLA, and the GBT. One important early result of these high-resolution studies was to test a prediction of the "cannonball model" of afterglow emission. Soon after GRB030329 was detected, the proponents of that alternate model predicted that VLBI monitoring would reveal a specific amount of . Instead, the VLBI observations show no proper motion.

COSMIC EXPLOSIONS HAVE COMMON ORIGIN: Using data from VLA observations of GRB030329 along with observations from other instruments, researchers have concluded that strong and weak gamma-ray bursts and X-ray flashes, which emit almost no gamma rays, have a common origin—the explosive death of a massive . Such explosions produce both narrow and wide polar beams and can distribute their energy quite differently between those beams. The narrow beam contains the gamma rays, and if it receives little energy, the explosion will appear as an X-ray flash rather than as a gamma-ray burst. Despite such differences, however, the explosions all produce about the same amount of total energy.

FIRST JET-PRODUCING DISCOVERED: Observations with the VLA, , and the Gemini-South 8-Meter Telescope have revealed the first spiral galaxy known to be emitting giant radio jets. The galaxy, 0313-192, originally was found in a VLA survey of Abell clusters. Subsequent observations with the VLA and with the Apache Point 3.5-Meter Telescope suggested that the galaxy was a spiral. HST observations with the Advanced Camera for Surveys, installed in 2002, confirmed the galaxy's spiral nature. Further studies will focus on possible merger events and on the nature of the intracluster medium as explanations for how a jet can originate from a spiral.

VLBA SHOWS "SUPERNOVA FACTORY" IN MERGING GALAXIES: The VLBA was used to study a "super " in the merging-galaxy pair Arp 299. Observations in 2002 showed four likely supernova remnants. In early 2003, another observation showed those four plus a new source, shown by follow-on observations to be a supernova. This "supernova factory" is expected to produce a new supernova every two years, and should provide data useful in understanding the star-formation process in merging systems in the early Universe. • STAR-FORMING DISK REVEALED IN DISTANT QUASAR: VLA observations of the IR-bright quasar PSS 2322+1944 reveal an Einstein Ring of CO emission in this object at a redshift of 4.12. The result is best modeled as a star-forming disk surrounding the QSO nucleus with a radius of 2 kpc. The disk of prolific star formation (900 solar masses per year) around an active nucleus provides strong support for the hypothesis that stars and supermassive black holes formed simultaneously in primeval galaxies.

VLBA DISTANCE MEASUREMENT SOLVES ASTROPHYSICAL MYSTERIES: Astronomers have used the unique abiUty of the VLBA to do ultra-precise astronomy of a pulsar to measure its parallax, thus resolving questions about its origin and also possibly solving the mystery about the energy distribution of cosmic rays. The VLBA parallax measurement resolved a dispute about the distance of pulsar B0656+14, placing it at essentially the same distance as the Monogem Ring supernova remnant, supporting the association of the two. With this resolved, B0656 and the Monogem Ring appear to be at the proper distance and the correct age to account for an excess of cosmic rays at a specific energy.
