Match background

AC Milan will look to turn the clock back almost 50 years when Manchester United FC visit the Giuseppe Meazza defending a 3-2 lead in the UEFA Champions League semi-final.

• It was in May 1958 in the last four of the European Champion Clubs' Cup that Milan became the first and so far only team to overturn a first-leg deficit against United in Europe's élite competition. Then as now Milan lost a lead at Old Trafford and succumbed to a late goal, going down 2-1 to a Tommy Taylor strike on 80 minutes.

• Milan undid the damage on home soil, however, as Juan Schiaffino (2), Nils Liedholm and Giancarlo Danova earned the Rossoneri a handsome 4-0 victory. Save for that reverse, United have won 22 ties in the European Cup and UEFA Champions League - qualifiers included - in which they have held an advantage from the first leg.

• United hold the upper hand this time thanks to Wayne Rooney's added-time winner in a thrilling first leg. Milan appeared in control at the interval at Old Trafford as they responded to Cristiano Ronaldo's early header with two goals from Kaká. However, Rooney made it 2-2 on 59 minutes before flashing the ball past Dida for a second time moments from the end.

• United are within one victory of a century of wins in the European Cup, including qualifying, a feat that has only been achieved by three other clubs. Real Madrid CF have been successful 173 times in Europe's premier club competition, followed by FC Bayern München (115) and semi-final rivals Milan (106).

• In 50 years of European competition, United have surrendered a winning position only four times, that 1958 loss to Milan included. The most recent instance was in the 1984/85 UEFA Cup quarter-finals against Székesfehérvári Videoton SC. Following a 1-0 home win they were then beaten by the same scoreline in Hungary before bowing out 5-4 on penalties.

• For their part, Milan have faced a first-leg deficit six times before in Europe's élite competition and won through on half of those occasions. Their most recent victory in these circumstances was in the 1968/69 first round where they overcame Malmö FF 4-1 on home soil after a 2-1 loss in Sweden.

• Their most recent defeat, meanwhile, was in last season's semi-final against FC Barcelona where they went down 1-0 at home before a goalless draw at the Camp Nou.

• The last time Milan retrieved a first-leg loss in any European club competition came in their UEFA Cup quarter-final against Hapoel Tel-Aviv FC in March 2002. After a 1-0 away reverse, Milan triumphed 2-0 at San Siro through a Rui Costa strike and Shimon Gershon's own goal.

• Milan have a 100 per cent record against United in two-legged contests. Following that first confrontation in the 1957/58 European Cup semi-final, the sides met again at the semi-final stage in 1968/69. Milan won 2-1 on aggregate, following up a 2-0 home success with a 1-0 defeat in Manchester, where present-day United director Sir Bobby Charlton found the net.

• The Rossoneri recorded 1-0 victories both at home and away in the teams' first knockout round encounter in 2004/05, Hernán Crespo claiming the only goal on both occasions.

• The teams for the second leg of that tie in Milan on 8 March 2005 were: Milan: Dida, Cafu, Nesta, Stam, Maldini, Gattuso (Costacurta 88), Pirlo, Seedorf, Rui Costa (Dhorasoo 85), Kaká, Crespo (Ambrosini 78). United: Howard, Brown (Smith 85), Ferdinand, Silvestre, Heinze, Ronaldo, Keane, Scholes, Rooney, Giggs (Fortune 57), Van Nistelrooy.

• Milan have never lost at home to English opposition, recording six wins and five draws in eleven matches.

's side have had mixed fortunes at home in the UEFA Champions League this season. In the group stage they defeated AEK Athens FC 3-0 and RSC Anderlecht 4-1 before losing 2-0 to LOSC Lille Métropole with qualification already assured. In the first knockout round they beat Celtic FC 1-0 through Kaká's extra-time goal, thus securing an aggregate win by the same scoreline. Then in the quarter-finals they were held 2-2 at home by FC Bayern München before a 2-0 away success.

• United have lost three of five away games in their 2006/07 campaign. In the group stage they beat SL Benfica 1-0 in September but went down by the same score at Celtic FC and FC København. Ryan Giggs earned them a 1-0 win at Lille in the first knockout round – setting them on the path to a 2-0 aggregate success – while in the quarter-finals, they succumbed 2-1 at AS Roma but made amends in spectacular fashion with a 7-1 home triumph.

• That defeat at Roma was United's ninth in 12 visits to Italy. They have won only twice away to opposition but their first success was against a Juventus side under Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti in the 1999 UEFA Champions League semi-final. Famously United trailed 2-0 to two goals from – now a Milan player - before replying through efforts from Roy Keane, Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole to triumph 3-2 on the night and 4-3 overall.

• Milan are aiming to reach their tenth European Cup final and United their third. The Italian team's most recent final appearance was two years ago, where they lost to Liverpool FC on penalties after a 3-3 draw in Istanbul. It was in 1999, meanwhile, that United were last in the final, overcoming FC Bayern München 2-1 in Barcelona.

• Overall Milan have previously been semi-finalists eleven times in this competition and only twice have they failed to go on to the final – losing to Real Madrid CF in 1955/56 and to FC Barcelona last season. Milan reached the 1992/93 final direct from the group stage.

• United's record at this stage of Europe's élite competition is less impressive, their eight previous semi-finals bringing just two victories. The most recent of their six semi-final losses came five years ago when they went down on away goals to Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

• Milan would play another Premiership team if they reached the final. Besides their 2005 defeat by Liverpool, they have won their two other UEFA finals against English clubs. They defeated Leeds United AFC 1-0 in the 1972/73 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final and Arsenal FC 2-0 on aggregate in the 1994 UEFA Super Cup, played in February 1995.

• United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar played in Serie A between 1999 and 2001 with Juventus, while Mikaël Silvestre, out for the season with a shoulder injury, spent the 1998/99 campaign at Inter. His fellow French defender Patrice Evra also played in Italy in the late 1990s for Marsala Calcio and Monza Calcio but never in the top flight.

• The winners will face Liverpool in the final on 23 May in Athens and will be designated as the home team.

• Media representatives who intend to apply for accreditations for the UEFA Champions League final in Athens and for the UEFA Cup final in Glasgow and who have not yet registered in F.A.M.E. should send an email to [email protected] immediately in order to be considered at all. The deadline for accreditation applications is Friday 4 May.

Match facts

Milan

• Clarence Seedorf has every chance of becoming the most successful player in UEFA Champions League history if Milan manage to go all the way in this season's competition. The Dutch has been a winner on three occasions, an achievement shared with Roberto Carlos, Raúl González and Fernando Morientes, although uniquely his trio of titles each came with a different club; AFC Ajax (1995), Madrid (1998) and Milan (2002). If Milan go all the way again, Seedorf would join Phil Neal (Liverpool FC, 1977, 1978, 1981 and 1984) in becoming one of only three non-Madrid players to have won the European Champion Clubs' Cup at least four times, with moving on to five successes.

• Maldini is untouchable in terms of current players in the European Cup having won with Milan in 1989 and 1990 as well as the 1994 and 2003 UEFA Champions League finals, although he would still need another triumph as well as success this season to move level with Madrid great Paco Gento who won the trophy six times between 1956 and 1966. Team-mate Alessandro Costacurta played in 1989, 1990 and 2003 but was suspended for the 1994 final.

• Milan have eight other players who have all won the trophy. Dida, Alessandro Nesta, Kakha Kaladze, Gennaro Gattuso, , Serginho, Massimo Ambrosini and Filippo Inzaghi all played their part in 2003. Dario Šimić was not involved in the final while Cristian Brocchi was an unused substitute.

• Only Kaká has featured in all 13 UEFA Champions League matches to date, including qualifying: Seedorf and Andrea Pirlo have both made 12 appearances in this season's competition. Marek Jankulovski, meanwhile, played in all six Group H games, both legs against Celtic and Bayern and last week's game at Old Trafford.

• Maldini made his 100th UEFA Champions League appearance in the first leg with Celtic in Glasgow. Raúl González, Roberto Carlos, David Beckham and Oliver Kahn have already reached that landmark. The record relates to 'group stage to final' matches played since the 1992/93 start of the UEFA Champions League.

• Cafu, meanwhile, made his 50th appearance in the competition away to Lille on Matchday 2, the eleventh Milan player to achieve that feat. The full-back has since taken his total to 53 games. Ambrosini brought up his half-century in the UEFA Champions League in Munich on Matchday 10.

• Maldini also leads the way in terms of UEFA club competition appearances having played 167 times. Seedorf (122 appearances) and Costacurta (121) have also passed the century mark while Nesta has played in 94 games, one more than Kaladze and three more than Inzaghi.

• Inzaghi is Milan's top scorer both in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA club competition overall; his strike in the second leg at Bayern was his 36th goal in the former and 56th in total. Kaká is next with 20 goals, all of which have come in the UEFA Champions League while new signing Ronaldo - who is ineligible - has 14 UEFA Champions League goals and 37 in UEFA club matches.

• Yoann Gourcuff made his debut in the UEFA Champions League group stage on Matchday 1 and marked the occasion with the second goal against AEK Athens FC. It was the former Stade Rennais FC midfielder's seventh European appearance and his first goal, although he had to wait for the Matchday 4 meeting with Anderlecht to make his second appearance.

• Daniele Bonera made a less successful UEFA Champions League debut on Matchday 3 at Anderlecht as he was sent off for a second bookable offence early in the second half.

• Pirlo made his 75th appearance in UEFA club competition in the first leg against Celtic. He has now appeared 79 times.

• Kaká is the leading scorer in this season's UEFA Champions League after the semi-final first legs with nine goals, including two at Old Trafford. Inzaghi has scored twice this season, including the second goal in the second leg with Bayern, while Gourcuff, Pirlo, Seedorf - who also struck in Munich - and Alberto Gilardino have all scored once.

• Gilardino's goal on Matchday 4 was his first in the competition in his ninth appearance.

• Seedorf has provided three assists so far, one more than Kaká with United's Ryan Giggs having set up the most goals to date with six.

• Kaká has had 24 shots on goal so far, the most in the competition. Inzaghi has managed 13 attempts.

• Kaká has had 15 shots wide after eleven games, three more than and Seedorf but one fewer than Cristiano Ronaldo who has had the most.

• Inzaghi has been caught offside 12 times in the first eleven games, with Mohamed Tchite, Jefferson Farfán and Totti - who are all no longer involved - and Didier Drogba having been penalised on 17 occasions.

• Ambrosini has committed 19 fouls after Matchday 10, eleven fewer than the most penalised player in the competition, Farfán and one more than Gattuso and three more than Jankulovski. Gattuso has also been impeded on 19 occasions, four behind Kaká.

• Milan have had a total of 148 shots so far, the most of the four teams left in the competition.

• Milan have had 77 shots wide and are the most prolific of the semi-finalists in terms of missing the target. In addition, only Manchester United, with 78, have had more shots on goal than Milan's eleven-game total of 71.

• Only Chelsea FC, with 187, have committed more fouls than Milan's total of 166 - one more than United.

• Milan have been caught offside 34 times in total, five less than Chelsea's total of 39 offsides.

• The Italian side won 62 corners in the first eleven matches, the most of the teams in the last four.

• Prior to the first leg with United, Milan had conceded only six goals, the lowest of the four semi-finalists. However, having been breached three times at Old Trafford, the Italian side have now conceded a goal more than both Chelsea and Liverpool FC.

• The Italian side have also scored fewest goals, however, having managed 15 in their first eleven games this season.

• Milan have collected 15 yellow cards to date, as well as that red card for Bonera on Matchday 3.

Last updated 02.05.2007 9:58:28 CET www.uefa.com Page 4 AC Milan - Manchester United FC MATCH PRESS KIT

• Gilardino missed the second leg with Bayern having picked up his third yellow card of this season's competition in the first match in Milan. Maldini will also face a one-match suspension if booked again. Bonera and Kaká were booked at Old Trafford.

• Pirlo and Gattuso were both part of an all-star Europe XI that took on Manchester United FC in the UEFA celebration match on Tuesday 13 March at Old Trafford.

• Kaká turned 25 on 22 April and Costacurta was 41 on the day of the first leg with United, 24 April. Valerio Fiori was 38 three days later and Ricardo Oliveira is 27 on 6 May.

• Costacurta became the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League when he played against AEK on Matchday 5. The veteran defender was aged 40 years and 211 days, 94 days older than previous record holder, Club Brugge KV goalkeeper Dany Verlinden when he played the full 90 minutes against AFC Ajax on 9 December 2003.

• Laurent Blanc is currently the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 36 years and 339 days having found the net for Manchester United FC in their 3-2 defeat of Olympiacos CFP on 23 October 2002.

• Costacurta has only scored twice in 456 league appearances for Milan, his last goal coming in the 1991/92 season. He has also never scored in 65 UEFA Champions League outings, or in 121 UEFA club competition matches. No outfield player has ever played as many UEFA games without finding the net.

• In terms of UEFA Champions League outfield players, only former Milan team-mate Michael Reiziger of PSV Eindhoven (74) and current colleague Nesta (69) have played more games without scoring. Nesta did find the net, however, in the 2003 final shoot-out as Milan beat Juventus 3-2 on penalties.

• Four days ahead of the visit of Manchester United, Milan maintained their push for a top-four place in Serie A with a 1-0 win at Torino FC. Seedorf scored the winner just before the half-hour mark with a powerful right-foot shot from long range. Milan were always on top and their path to victory was smoothed when Oscar Brevi was sent off for the home side in the closing stages.

• Ancelotti began with just six of the side that started at Old Trafford, namely Dida, Nesta, Seedorf, Pirlo, Ambrosini and Gilardino. Coming in alongside them were midweek substitutes Bonera and Brocchi along with Cafu, Favalli and Ronaldo, who is ineligible for Europe. Kaká remained on the bench and Ancelotti will have been grateful that he could give him the weekend off.

• "It was really hot today and it was not easy for both sides to play at a high tempo,” said Ancelotti. “For us it was important to earn three points without wasting too much energy. Probably Manchester United will have less pressure on them after the results in the Premiership but a UEFA Champions League semi-final is unique, nothing else will matter. We know we have to play at our very best without making mistakes if we want to beat them. I would like my team to play the whole game as they did in the first 60 minutes at Old Trafford."

• Pirlo was voted man of the match against Torino and said: “We are in good physical condition in the right moment of the season. I'm sure we will play a great game against Manchester United on Wednesday."

• Seedorf's strike was his sixth of the Serie A season, beating his previous record of five goals in 2004/05. The 31-year-old Dutch international has also scored twice in the UEFA Champions League this season for a total of eight goals. This is also a record for him in the Milan shirt having scored seven goals in all competitions both in 2002/03 and 2004/05.

• The win against Torino was the fifth consecutive in Serie A for Milan. During this streak the Rossoneri have scored 15 goals and conceded five.

Last updated 02.05.2007 9:58:28 CET www.uefa.com Page 5 AC Milan - Manchester United FC MATCH PRESS KIT

• Pirlo and Seedorf are the Milan players with most appearances in Serie A this season, 31 each. They have both played eleven times in the UEFA Champions League but Seedorf played five times in the , one more than Pirlo.

• The victory against Torino was the first clean sheet for Milan since 18 March, a 1-0 win over Atalanta BC. The Rossoneri had always conceded at least one goal in their last five Serie A games. Milan have scored at least one goal in their last 13 games in all competition. The last team not to concede against them was Celtic FC in the UEFA Champions League first knockout round first leg on 20 February.

• Maldini, Gattuso, Kaladze, Costacurta and Serginho were all left out of the squad on Saturday but only Maldini is carrying an injury. He had to be substituted at half-time at Old Trafford having suffered a recurrence of a long-term knee problem. "He has four days to recover and we are optimistic," said Ancelotti.

• Gattuso, who was substituted early in the second half in Manchester due to a foot injury, is set to be fit for the return leg. "Gattuso has fully recovered," Ancelotti said, adding that Inzaghi was also "in good condition" and could also play.

• After a board meeting on Saturday, Milan vice president Adriano Galliani confirmed Milan were in no mood to let go of Kaká. He said: "He has a four-year contract and we will renew his contract every year."

• Kaká admitted in his uefa.com diary the first-leg result was not what his side had hoped for, saying: "We left Old Trafford a little bit disappointed but not with our heads down at all. I only say that we were sad because of the late goal we conceded. If the match had finished 2-2 I still feel we would have a mountain to climb although those away goals are very important. But losing the first leg is not the end of the world and we stand a great chance of turning the tie around at the San Siro. The game at Old Trafford was a real spectacle and I'm convinced the second leg will be another amazing game – perhaps even more amazing than the first match. It was a wonderful show for the fans and it could be another one on Wednesday."

• Former Milan defender Marcel Desailly was full of praise for United after watching the first leg, telling uefa.com: "Not only counterattacking, for me they're the best team in Europe, especially if they stay in their classic 4-4-2 formation. They manage to keep a good shape. They can make the difference at any time – [Ryan] Giggs on the left, Cristiano Ronaldo, Scholes, Wayne Rooney and [Louis] Saha if he is fit. It is the best team. They can play collectively, each of them can play individually, but most of all they can all make the difference." Despite that, the former French international believes the trip to Milan will be a step too far, adding: "I expect to see Chelsea and Milan, my last two clubs, in the final."

Manchester United

• United are within one victory of a century of wins in the European Champion Clubs' Cup, including qualifying, a feat that has only been achieved by three other clubs. Real Madrid CF have been successful 173 times in Europe's premier club competition, followed by FC Bayern München (115) and semi-final rivals Milan (106).

• Four members of the United squad have tasted success in a UEFA Champions League final. Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs and Ole Gunnar Solskjær all appeared in United's 1999 victory while Edwin van der Sar was part of the AFC Ajax side that defeated Milan four years earlier. Wes Brown and Paul Scholes both missed the final eight years ago, the latter through suspension while the former was an unused substitute.

• The visit of SL Benfica in the final Group F game marked Sir Alex Ferguson's 200th match on the bench in UEFA club competition.

• Three United players have featured in all eleven UEFA Champions League matches to date: Van der Sar, Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney. Only Van der Sar has played all 990 minutes so far. Scholes had been ever present prior to his suspension for the second leg against Roma.

Last updated 02.05.2007 9:58:28 CET www.uefa.com Page 6 AC Milan - Manchester United FC MATCH PRESS KIT

• Scholes and Van der Sar made their 100th appearances in UEFA club competition against Benfica. Neville and Giggs had already reached the landmark with the latter now having played 110 games, two more than Neville.

• Neville and Giggs are both closing in on a century of UEFA Champions League appearances having featured in 98 and 94 'group stage to final' matches respectively.

• Carrick, meanwhile, made his UEFA Champions League debut against Celtic on Matchday 1, which was also only his second appearance in UEFA club competition. Nemanja Vidić took his bow in the competition against Benfica on Matchday 2.

• Scholes scored his 20th goal in the UEFA Champions League on Matchday 3 and has now made 94 appearances in the competition. Solskjær, meanwhile, is one goal short of the same total having played 17 games fewer.

• Alan Smith made his 50th appearance in UEFA competition in the 1-0 defeat at FC København on Matchday 4.

• Rooney's goal in the first leg with Roma was his first in the competition since his debut against Fenerbahçe SK on 28 September 2004, when he scored a hat-trick. The game in Rome was his 19th appearance in the UEFA Champions League and he was on target again on Matchday 10 and 11.

• Three United players scored their first UEFA Champions League goals in the 7-1 defeat of Roma in the quarter-final second leg; Patrice Evra, Carrick and Cristiano Ronaldo who was making his 27th appearance in the competition. Vidić, John O'Shea, Kieran Richardson and Louis Saha have all opened their scoring accounts in the competition this season.

• Saha and Rooney are two of six players who has scored four goals in the first eleven games; Kaká is the top scorer with nine goals. Ronaldo has scored three goals, one more than Giggs and Carrick.

• Giggs has set up six goals in the first eleven matchdays, one more than Ronaldo and the most in the competition. Scholes, Saha and Solskjær have two assists to their names.

• Saha and Rooney have had 12 shots on goal, nine fewer than Ronaldo and 12 less than Kaká, who had the most in the first eleven matchdays.

• Ronaldo has missed the target on 16 occasions, the most in the competition. Rooney has had 15 shots wide, while Saha has missed the target eleven times to date.

• Rooney and Ronaldo have been caught offside eight times, nine fewer than Totti, Mohamed Tchite and Jefferson Farfán, who are all no longer involved, and Didier Drogba.

• Scholes has committed 24 fouls, six fewer than Farfán, the competition's most penalised player.

• Ronaldo is the most fouled player in the United squad, having been impeded 29 times, nine fewer than Francesco Totti, whose AS Roma side lost to United in the quarter-finals. Saha has been impeded on 16 occasions, as have Rooney and Gabriel Heinze.

• United have scored 23 goals in the competition, and are the UEFA Champions League's top scorers this season. Prior to Matchday 10 they had yet to find the net inside the first 29 minutes of any game but Carrick, Smith and Rooney all struck in the opening 19 minutes against Roma at Old Trafford.

• United have had 145 shots in total, three fewer than Milan who have had the most of any team in the last four.

• The English side have had 78 shots on goal, the most in the competition.

• An all-star Europe XI featuring the club's former striker Henrik Larsson took on United in the UEFA celebration match on Tuesday 13 March at Old Trafford. Sir Alex's lineup was: Tomasz Kuszczak (Thomas Heaton), Neville (O'Shea), Brown, Heinze, Richardson, Ronaldo (Chris Eagles), Scholes, Giggs (Carrick), Ji-Sung Park, Rooney (Andrew Cole - guest), Smith (Dong Fangzhuo).

• The game also marked 50 years of United's involvement in UEFA club competition; the Manchester club became the first English team to play in the European Champion Clubs' Cup in 1956 and were the first from the country to win it, in 1968. Sir Bobby Charlton, who scored twice in the final, said of that night: "The crowd were alive because they had never seen anything like this. The quality of players was sensational and United were winning. It's still the same adventure today."

• Evra is suspended for the trip to Milan having picked up his third yellow card in the competition this season in the first leg. Giggs was also cautioned in the first leg but is not under threat of a ban if booked again, unlike Scholes, Heinze and Ronaldo.

• O'Shea was 26 on 30 April.

• Before being ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury, Park was hoping to become the first Korean footballer to win the UEFA Champions League. It means only team-mate Dong could make history as the competition's first Asian winner, although the China forward has to make his UEFA Champions League debut.

• Premiership leaders United came from two goals down to win 4-2 at Everton FC on Saturday lunchtime, in a match played simultaneously with Chelsea FC's 2-2 home draw against Bolton Wanderers FC. Rooney, for the second time in a week, scored United's third goal on his return to his former club. United are now five points clear of champions Chelsea with three games to play.

• Everton were in front on eleven minutes when Alan Stubbs' long-range free-kick deflected in off Carrick. The second came early in the second half when Manuel Fernandes held off Brown before smashing in a shot from the edge of the area. O'Shea quickly pulled one back after a goalkeeping error, prompting the arrival of Ronaldo from the bench. The Portuguese then made his presence count with a header that caused confusion in the Everton defence before former United player Phil Neville put the ball into his own net. That set up Rooney's chance to shine with a neat finish before youth-team product Chris Eagles, another replacement, struck a superb fourth in added time.

• From the side that faced Milan, Solskjær came in for Fletcher, while Smith started in place of the rested Ronaldo, with Sir Alex concerned about a slight-pre-game knock, although the two would swap places in the second half. There was no place on the bench for Saha, despite pre-game speculation that he had recovered sufficiently from a hamstring injury. Ferdinand (groin) and Vidić (collarbone) both missed out entirely, despite making good progress.

• Sir Alex said: "I can't explain the game. I didn't think were we doing badly but they scored two goals from two great strikes. In football that can happen. The second was an incredible hit. We were toying with bringing on Ronaldo and we felt if we got a goal, bring him on. We got a break with the first goal and at that moment I felt we had a chance. I think it was waiting to happen."

• Rooney has 14 Premiership goals this season, making him the top English marksman in the division. Overall, Didier Drogba (19) and Ronaldo (16) lead the way.

• Eagles, making his Premeirship debut, had played 15 games on loan for Dutch club NEC Nijmegen earlier this season, having also gained past experience at Watford FC and Sheffield Wednesday FC.

• United have lost one of their last eleven league matches. In addition, they have won more Premiership matches this season than any other club (27), drawn fewer (four), dropped fewer points (20) and scored more goals (82) than any other club.

Last updated 02.05.2007 9:58:28 CET www.uefa.com Page 8 AC Milan - Manchester United FC MATCH PRESS KIT

• United have lost only four Premiership matches this season; only Chelsea, with three, have fewer defeats.

• The Premiership leaders have failed to score in just two Premiership matches this season and have not been involved in a goalless draw to date.

• United have scored more away Premiership goals than any other club with 36.

• They have already beaten eleven clubs home and away in this Premiership season - Wigan, Aston Villa, Watford, Tottenham, Charlton, Fulham, Liverpool, Bolton, Blackburn, Sheffield United and Everton.

• Sir Alex recognises Evra's suspension will force a defensive reshuffle in Milan, saying: "We're going to try hard to get Rio Ferdinand fit, there is some improvement. But I'm anticipating I'll have to play Darren Fletcher at right-back, John O'Shea at centre-back and move Gabriel [Heinze] to left-back."

• Sir Alex also confirmed Park underwent an operation on his troublesome knee in America last Friday. The Korean international, who has not played since the 4-1 Premiership win against Blackburn Rovers FC on 31 March, has travelled to the USA to visit knee specialist Dr Richard Steadman.

• Carrick is nevertheless confident United can translate their first-leg lead into a final place, saying: "We are not getting carried away but we know we're good enough to go away from home and win. We will not be going over there to defend, we're not a team that can do that - we haven't got the players. We want to attack and play good football and it's going to be a good game."

• Rooney is hopeful United, who have an FA Cup final against Chelsea FC on 9 May, can triumph in the Premiership and in Europe. "I'd like to win all of them to be honest," he told uefa.com. "Personally I'd most like to win the league, being from England and watching the Premiership all my life, so hopefully we can win that and do well in the Champions League as well. It would be a dream come true, a Champions League final. It's what all players want to do."

Head coach profiles

AC Milan: Carlo Ancelotti Date of birth: 10 June 1959 Nationality: Italian Playing career: Parma FC, AS Roma, AC Milan Coaching career: AC Reggiana, Parma FC, Juventus, AC Milan

One of only five people – the others being Miguel Muñoz, Giovanni Trapattoni, Johan Cruyff and Frank Rijkaard – to have lifted the European Champion Clubs' Cup as both a player and coach, Carlo Ancelotti is one of the most highly-regarded coaches in European football. He claimed the UEFA Champions League in 2003 in only his second season at the AC Milan helm - he would have added a second but for Liverpool FC's stunning fightback two years later - and has added Serie A and Coppa Italia medals to an individual trophy cabinet teeming with honours.

His coaching career is proving every bit as illustrious as his days as a no-nonsense midfielder. Ancelotti started out at AS Roma, winning the Scudetto in 1983, before moving to Milan three years later after his hometown club deemed him too injury-prone. He quickly went about proving them wrong, thriving at San Siro in five years of unyielding success which brought two more Serie A crowns and back-to-back European Cup wins in 1989 and 1990.

He started his coaching career in similar vein, leading AC Reggiana to promotion in his debut season in 1996 and went on to Parma FC who he guided to an unprecedented second-placed finish. By 1998 he was at Juventus and although he never managed to better runners-up spot, Ancelotti did earn a return to San Siro in summer 2001. There he thrived, winning the UEFA Champions League, Coppa Italia and UEFA Super Cup in his second season and completing the set with the Serie A title in 2003/04. He guided the Rossoneri to second in the next two campaigns, although they were subsequently demoted to third last term following the Italian sporting fraud tribunal. In March, he extended his contract until summer 2008. Manchester United FC: Sir Alex Ferguson Date of birth: 31 December 1941 Nationality: Scottish Coaching career: Falkirk FC, East Stirlingshire FC, Saint Mirren FC, Aberdeen FC, Manchester United FC

Sir Alex Ferguson has enjoyed more than two decades at the top, restoring Manchester United FC to their position as one of Europe's foremost clubs. He helped nurture a group of young players including David Beckham, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville who formed the backbone of United's treble-winning side in 1999. The esteem in which his peers hold him is reflected by his position as head of the UEFA Coaches Panel.

Ferguson enjoyed a relatively successful playing career that included a spell at Rangers FC before becoming player-coach at Falkirk FC. He then managed East Stirlingshire FC and Saint Mirren FC before shooting to prominence at Aberdeen FC. In 1980 the club won the Scottish title to break the Old Firm's 14-year stranglehold, a dominance which has returned since Aberdeen's last title in 1985. Ferguson's greatest success with the Dons came in 1983, when they beat Real Madrid CF to win the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.

United appointed Ferguson in 1986 and after a difficult start the Scot led the club to their longest period of sustained success. Their first trophy was the 1990 FA Cup, followed next season by Cup Winners' Cup glory. In 1993 came the first of eight Premiership titles, to which five FA Cups were added. Ferguson's finest moment came in 1999, when two added-time goals gave United a 2-1 UEFA Champions League final victory against FC Bayern München. After failing to get beyond the 2005/06 group stage and finishing runners-up behind Premiership champions Chelsea FC, Ferguson is keen to hit the heights again. On 6 November, he celebrated 20 years in charge at Old Trafford.

Frank De Bleeckere is carrying on a family tradition which has endured for more than four decades. De Bleeckere's grandfather was a referee in Belgium in the 1950s and 1960s, and his father René a top-flight match official in the domestic game some 20 years ago. A PR manager born in Oudenaarde, he speaks English, Flemish, French and German and is married with a daughter. He started refereeing in 1984, oversaw his first top-flight match in 1995, and received his FIFA badge in 1998. The same year he officiated at his first UEFA tournament, the UEFA European Under-16 Championship in Scotland, and quickly graduated to UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup duties.

He sandwiched UEFA EURO 2004™, where he was one of four specialist fourth officials, with appearances at the 2003 FIFA U-20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates and 2005 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Peru, where he refereed the final between Mexico and Brazil. De Bleeckere had earlier overseen a showpiece closer to home, the 2005 Belgian Cup final between Club Brugge KV and KFC Germinal Beerschot Antwerpen.

De Bleeckere was in the middle for six UEFA Champions League matches in 2004/05, including the quarter-final first leg between Liverpool FC and Juventus, and four in 2005/06 before travelling to the FIFA World Cup where he took charge of four matches culminating in Italy's quarter-final defeat of Ukraine. He was soon back in the rarified air of the UEFA Champions League, beginning the 2006/07 campaign with Manchester United FC's 1-0 win at SL Benfica.

UEFA information

Final accreditation UEFA has confirmed the media accreditation process for the UEFA Champions League final, including a new registration and accreditation process. The final of the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League will take place at 20.45CET at the Athens Olympic Stadium on Wednesday 23 May. Media representatives wishing to cover the final must apply directly to UEFA, and can do so as of now via the online accreditation service on uefa.com. The deadline for accreditation requests is Friday 4 May.

UEFA is only handling accreditation requests and is not responsible for ordering telephone lines, ISDN lines or any other form of communication facilities that might be required by media representatives. All international media are asked to make telecom requests via their national telecom company as soon as they receive accreditation confirmation from UEFA. In case of cancellation due to unforeseen circumstances, please immediately advise UEFA Media Accreditation Services by email on [email protected].

Champions Festival UEFA has confirmed the staging of the UEFA Champions Festival in the five days prior to this season's final in Athens on 23 May. The activities will take place each day from 11am to 11pm at the Ancient Olympic Stadium, Syntagma Square and Zappeion Square. A UEFA statement said: "We will aim at bringing the fans closer to the match and make them feel as being part of the final, and at the same time help promote football and its values to the supporters. By doing this, we will give the opportunity for the local population to experience the final as a memorable event for their city."

Among the attractions will be a trophy display allowing fans to get their hands on and be pictured with the European Champion Clubs’ Cup; clinics where fans will be able to practise their skills; display of memorabilia; and an informative UEFA booth. Ther will also be the Champions Gallery, a sound and image exhibition revisiting the proud history of the competition. There will also be a youth tournament named Young Champions.

Referee seminar The seventh UEFA talents and mentors seminar for up and coming referees takes place at UEFA headquarters in Nyon for three days from next Tuesday (8 May). In the programme, promising officials are given constant expert guidance by experienced former referees. UEFA is of the view that young referees can benefit from the wisdom of colleagues who have served as match officials at the highest levels. The programme began in 2001, and has already borne considerable fruit. During the wide-ranging seminar, the talents will be given an update on UEFA's recent instructions to European referees on protecting players, as well as the image of the game. Also at the event Pierluigi Collina, now a UEFA Referees' Committee member, will give a presentation of tactical match preparation.

Draw/match dates The draw for the remaining rounds of the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League took place at the Megaron International Conference Centre in Athens, Greece on 9 March. It featured a straight draw involving all eight clubs without seedings or country protection. As well as the quarter-finals, the draw was also made for the semi-finals, meaning teams knew who they would meet should they progress. The ceremony coincided with the official trophy handover from 2006 winners FC Barcelona to UEFA, with the European Champion Clubs' Cup being passed on to city mayor Nikitas Kaklamanis for display until the 23 May final at the Olympic Stadium in the Greek capital.

Competition facts

UEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know?

• Teams have come back from a first-leg deficit to go through to the next stage on 18 occasions. The biggest losing margin a side has overturned was achieved by RC Deportivo La Coruña in 2003/04 when the Spanish club fought back from a 4-1 defeat at AC Milan to win 4-0 at home and progress to the semi-finals.

• Fifteen ties, including three in this season's first knockout round, have been decided on the away goals rule, including five where the triumphant team lost the first leg.

• Manchester United FC hold the record for the biggest first-leg lead with a 4-0 home success against FC Porto in the 1996/97 quarter-finals, eventually going through by that margin after a goalless return.

• Only five ties have gone to penalties. Four of these were finals – 1996, 2001, 2003 and 2005. The only two-legged tie decided on spot-kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 win against Olympique Lyonnais on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2 aggregate draw.

• In all, eleven ties have required extra time, including AC Milan's meeting with Celtic FC in the first knockout round this season. Along with the five ties mentioned above, four quarter-final and two first knockout round encounters have also needed an additional 30 minutes in an attempt to determine a winner.

• Real Madrid CF set a new record for knockout stage qualification in successive seasons. This was the tenth straight season since 1997/98 that they made it to this stage, moving them ahead of United, who appeared nine times in a row between 1996/97 and 2004/05. Overall, they have now played in the knockout stage eleven times, one more than United and FC Bayern München.

• Had FC Bayern München beaten AC Milan in the last eight, it would have meant the first time the UEFA Champions League final four had no representation from at least one club from either the Primera División or Serie A.

• The last European Champion Clubs' Cup season that featured not one semi-finalist from either Spain or Italy, or English for that matter, was the 1990/91 campaign.

• England's success has been matched on two other occasions in European football's premier club competition since 1992/93. In 1999/00, Valencia CF, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid CF all made it through, again with Bayern as the odd one out, with Madrid ultimately going all the way. Then, in 2002/03, Madrid gate-crashed the Italian semi-final party, as eventual winners AC Milan, FC Internazionale Milano and Juventus all contested the penultimate round.

• Teams from the same country have contested the final on two previous occasions. Madrid overcame Valencia 3-0 in Paris in 2000, and three years later Milan defeated Juventus 3-2 on penalties after a goalless draw at Old Trafford.

• In terms of semi-finals, the biggest winning margin in a single game has been three goals. AFC Ajax recorded a 5-2 home success in the 1994/95 second leg against Bayern, while there have been 4-1 victories on three occasions. Juventus did it twice at home against Ajax (second leg) and AS Monaco FC (first leg) in 1996/97 and 1997/98 respectively, and Valencia at home to Barcelona (first leg) in 1999/00.

• On four other occasions, teams won 3-0. In the 1993/94 semi-finals, played as one-off matches, home teams Milan and Barcelona beat Monaco and Porto respectively. The other instances were by Ajax at Panathinaikos in 1995/96, the only time a team has lost at home and gone through, and Valencia at home to Leeds United AFC in 2000/01.

• That 4-1 win for Juventus against Monaco in 1997/98 was part of the biggest aggregate semi-final score. The principality club won 3-2 in their home return to make it ten goals in the tie.

• Looking back to the history of European Cup semi-finals, Madrid's 6-0 second-leg win against FC Zürich in the 1963/64 edition remains the biggest victory. Eintracht Frankfurt's 12-4 aggregate success against Rangers FC in 1959/60 is the biggest two-leg total overall.

• The 2004/05 first knockout round encounter between Lyon and Werder Bremen featured more goals (12) over its two legs than any previous UEFA Champions League knockout tie – as Lyon defeated Bremen 10-2.

• United's 7-1 victory against Roma is the biggest victory in a UEFA Champions League quarter-final match. The previous best were Barcelona's 5-1 second-leg defeat after extra time of Chelsea (1999/00), RC Deportivo La Coruña's 4-0 return victory against AC Milan (2003/04) and United's 4-0 first-leg success against Porto (1996/97).

• Roma-United featured eleven goals over the two legs, a quarter-final record shared by Chelsea's 6-5 aggregate victory against Bayern in 2004/05 and Madrid's success by the same margin against United in 2002/03.

• The biggest European Cup quarter-final victory was Madrid's 8-0 first-leg defeat of Sevilla FC in the 1957/58 edition.

• There has never been a knockout tie ending goalless after two legs. Eight have finished 1-0 on aggregate, most recently Milan's narrow victory against Celtic after extra time in this season's first knockout round.

• Clarence Seedorf is the only player to win the European Cup with three clubs (Ajax 1995, Madrid 1998 and Milan 2003). Had Bayern gone all the way, Ottmar Hitzfeld would have joined Liverpool FC's Bob Paisley – 1977, 1978 and 1981 - as the only coach to win three times, having won with BV Borussia Dortmund in 1997 and Bayern in 2001.

• Hitzfeld and Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburger SV 1983) are the only coaches to win with two different clubs, an exclusive club that José Mourinho (Porto 2004) could join if Chelsea go all the way.

• All four of the coaches involved in this season's semi-finals have already lifted the European Cup; Sir Alex Ferguson guided United to glory in 1999, Carlo Ancelotti's Milan claimed a sixth title at Old Trafford in 2003, the following year José Mourinho led Porto to victory and in 2005 Liverpool, under Rafael Benítez, overcame Ancelotti's Milan in Istanbul.

• Players from 28 countries have appeared in this season's competition from the four clubs in the semi-finals.

• Three of those countries – Chile (Mark González, Liverpool), Ivory Coast (Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou, Chelsea) and Korea Republic (Ji-Sung Park, Manchester United) – have never produced a winner. China is not one of those 28 countries as Dong Fangzhuo is yet to appear in the competition for United, although the forward and team-mate Park are striving to become the first Asian player to lift the famous trophy.

• Twenty-one English players have appeared for the semi-finalists this term, six more than from Italy. France (7), Brazil and the Netherlands (6), Portugal (4), Argentina and Spain (3) are the next in the list, followed by , Ivory Coast, Norway, Republic of Ireland and Wales (all 2). Australia, Cameroon, Chile, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, Georgia, Germany, Ghana, Korea Republic, Nigeria, Poland, Scotland, Serbia and Ukraine (all one).

• If Chelsea go all the way, it would be the first European Cup success for London. Only five capital cities have been successful in this way: Madrid (Real Madrid CF), Belgrade (FK Crvena Zvezda), Bucharest (FC Steaua Bucuresti), Amsterdam (AFC Ajax) and Lisbon (SL Benfica).

• England manager Steve McClaren, who as assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson in the 1999 triumph would particularly have enjoyed every minute of United's 7-1 victory against Roma, will be a particularly happy man. Nine of his first-choice starting UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying eleven could all be involved in the semi-finals, with Tottenham Hotspur FC goalkeeper Paul Robinson and Bayern midfielder Owen Hargreaves the only exceptions.

• Athens was awarded the 2007 final after a decision by the UEFA Executive Committee at its meeting in Tallinn, Estonia in April 2005. The Greek capital will play host to its first European final on 23 May since the venue was rebuilt to stage the 2004 Olympic Games. The stadium previously provided the backdrop to the UEFA Champions League showpiece of 1993/94, when Milan were 4-0 winners against FC Barcelona. Prior to 1994, Athens also saw the European Cup lifted in 1982/83, the year after the venue was first inaugurated. On that occasion, Hamburger SV beat Juventus 1-0. The ground also staged the 1986/87 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final when AFC Ajax were 1-0 winners against 1. FC Lokomotiv Leipzig.

Team facts

AC Milan

UEFA club competition milestones • Milan have been crowned champions of Europe six times, making them the second most successful club in the history of the competition behind Real Madrid CF. They won the European Champion Clubs' Cup in 1962/63, 1968/69, 1988/89 and 1989/90 before lifting the UEFA Champions League with a 4-0 victory against FC Barcelona in 1993/94 and most recently in 2002/03 when they triumphed on penalties after a goalless draw with Juventus FC.

• Alongside their success in the European Cup, Milan also lifted the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup twice - defeating Hamburger SV 2-0 in the 1967/68 final and Leeds United AFC 1-0 in 1972/73 thanks to a Luciano Chiarugi goal after just four minutes in Thessaloniki. The following season they were runners-up against German side 1. FC Magdeburg.

UEFA club competition honours • European Champion Clubs' Cup: 1962/63, 1968/69, 1988/89, 1989/90, 1993/94, 2002/03 • UEFA Cup Winners' Cup: 1967/68, 1972/73 • European/South American Cup: 1969, 1989, 1990 • UEFA Super Cup: 1989, 1990, 1994, 2003

Ten-year record (including current season) • Milan are making their fifth successive appearance in the UEFA Champions League and their seventh in eight seasons. They got past FK Crvena Zvezda in the third qualifying round to reach the group stage. The Italian side recorded three victories and a draw from their six outings in the group stage to top the standings with ten points, one ahead of LOSC Lille Métropole.

2005/06 season Domestic record: Milan ended the Serie A season in second place but a 30-point deduction following a sporting fraud investigation in Italy meant they were relegated to third and did not get an automatic place into the UEFA Champions League group stage. They were the highest goalscorers in the league, scoring 85 times in 38 games.

European record: Milan coasted through the group stage of the UEFA Champions League, losing once at PSV Eindhoven, before a 5-2 aggregate win against FC Bayern München in the first knockout round secured their last-eight place. After drawing 0-0 at Olympique Lyonnais, Milan won the second leg 3-1 but their path to a second successive final was blocked by FC Barcelona in the semi-finals - the eventual winners triumphing 1-0 over two legs.

It was the first time they had failed to do so since 1994/95. However, United returned to the knockout stages once more this season, topping their group with four wins from their six outings to post a 12-point tally, three clear of second-placed Celtic FC.

European record: Although Debreceni VSC were brushed aside in qualifying, United came unstuck in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. The only win came in a 2-1 home defeat of SL Benfica and losses in the return fixture as well as at LOSC Lille Métropole saw United finish in last place. Two draws with section winners, and eventual semi-finalists, Villarreal CF showed that United were not totally outclassed.

Competition information

UEFA's most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the 1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992.

• Away goals rule: For ties in the first knockout round, quarter-finals and semi-finals, the team which scores the greater aggregate of goals in the two matches qualifies for the next round. If the two teams involved in a tie score the same number of goals over the two legs, the team which scores more away goals qualifies for the next stage. If this procedure does not produce a result - i.e if the two teams score the same number of goals at home and away - extra time of two periods of 15 minutes shall be played at the end of the second leg. If during extra time both teams score the same number of goals, away goals count double (i.e. the visiting club qualifies). If no goals are scored during extra time, kicks from the penalty mark determine which team qualifies.

• Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced that the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA club competitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and from season 2006/07, at least four places on this list will be reserved for players trained by the club's own football academy of which half can be players trained by other clubs from within the same association of the said club. The 'B' list will also continue to exist - involving an unlimited number of Under-21 players who have been at the club for two seasons. In 2007/08, the number of locally-trained players in a squad will increase to six before rising to eight in 2008/09, with up to half of each figure allowed to be association trained.

A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the club between the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at least three seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21. UEFA is concerned some clubs are not training enough of their own players, but simply taking them from elsewhere. The proposed measures have the objective of creating a better balance in domestic competitions, preventing clubs from simply 'hoarding' players in squads and creating a system whereby locally-trained players would be given a greater opportunity to play regularly in club sides - ensuring a large reservoir of talent for national teams as a consequence.

• Financial information: UEFA says the estimated budgeted income for the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League is €750m – higher than the 2005/06 campaign revenue which amounted to CHF943m (approx. €610m). Under the competition regulations, 75 per cent of the total revenue received from television and commercial contracts concluded by UEFA, up to a maximum of €530m will go to the 32 clubs taking part in the group stage of Europe's premier club competition. The remaining 25 per cent is earmarked for European football and remains with UEFA to cover organisational and administrative costs, as well as for solidarity payments to associations, clubs and leagues.

It is also stipulated that participating clubs will receive 82 per cent of any revenue received from the same stream in excess of €530m, with the remaining 18 per cent allocated to UEFA for European football. In addition, 50 per cent of the revenue received from new media contracts concluded by UEFA will also be available for distribution to the clubs, and the remaining 50 per cent will be allocated to the above-mentioned European football portion/quota.

The gross income for 2006/07 is estimated at €750m, and according to projections, will be made up of €743.3m from TV and commercial contracts and €6.7m from new media contracts. The fixed amount to the clubs is €276.6m. Each of the 32 clubs in the group stage will receive a starting bonus of €2m. In addition, they will receive a match bonus of €400,000 per match. Performance bonuses will amount to €600,000 for a win and €300,000 for a draw in the group stage. The 16 teams playing in the first knockout round will receive €2.2m, the eight quarter-finalists €2.5m each and the four semi-finalists €3m each. The UEFA Champions League winners will receive €7m, and the runners-up €4m.

This means that a total minimum amount of €4.4m per club is guaranteed for the group stage. A club could receive, at best, up to €22.7m, not counting the market pool share and gate receipts. The remaining €270.4m will be distributed according to the proportional value of each TV market represented by the clubs taking part in the UEFA Champions League, and to be split among the number of teams – four, three, two or one – participating from a given association.

Gattuso takes heart from Kaká class Despite seeing his side succumb to a 3-2 defeat by Manchester United FC in their UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg, Gennaro Gattuso is convinced AC Milan will reach the final thanks to the "devastating" form of Kaká.

Kaká class The Brazil forward inspired Milan's short-lived revival at Old Trafford with two goals in 15 minutes that gave the visitors a 2-1 half-time lead - and Gattuso has every faith that Kaká will continue his UEFA Champions League heroics on Wednesday night. "If he is as devastating as he was in the first leg, we will win," said the Italian international, whose excellent display last week was curtailed when he limped off after 53 minutes with a foot injury.

'Important player' Gattuso has recovered in time for the rematch, though, and is raring to go. "I feel fine," the 29-year-old said. "I thought it was going to be a lot worse but instead I have managed to recover so I am delighted." Milan's rival manager at San Siro, Sir Alex Ferguson, is another Kaká fan - though he also has a word of praise for Gattuso himself. "The obvious threat was there for everyone to see last week in the shape of Kaká," Sir Alex told uefa.com. "Kaká is the obvious threat. I thought he gave a terrific performance and we have to pay attention to that. We know where their threat's come from. They also have important players like Gattuso. He brings a lot of energy to them, he's a very important player."

'Incredible hand' The combative former Rangers FC midfielder is demanding similar commitment from the stands at the Giuseppe Meazza, calling for British-style support for the Rossoneri. "I noticed with Liverpool [FC] and Manchester United that the English never give up and it's thanks to their fans," he said. "It's not a criticism of ours, of course, they always get behind us and sing. However, this time they need to give us an incredible hand. We know it will be tough but that's normal in the Champions League semi-finals. All Rossoneri fans should be proud because it's a miracle we've reached this stage. No one expected it. Considering the way we started the season and what happened, it has been a great result to get here. But we don't want to stop now." Gattuso, for one, will not be stopping. "I know only one way of preparing for this kind of game: I think about running and running until I cannot run any more."

O'Shea calls for United front Manchester United FC defender John O'Shea said it was time to "step up to the plate" as his side look to clinch a place in the UEFA Champions League final.

Past masters United lead AC Milan 3-2 going into Wednesday's second leg, and the 26-year-old Irish international aims to make that count at San Siro. There are four UEFA Champions League winners in Sir Alex Ferguson's ranks - Ryan Giggs, Ole Gunnar Solskjær and Wes Brown with United in 1999, Edwin van der Sar in AFC Ajax colours four years before - yet O'Shea insists the Red Devils will not be relying on the old guard to take them to Athens.

'A great buzz' "In the changing room before the match, that's when they'll guide us and help us with their experience," O'Shea said. "But you can't always rely on other people. You have to step up to the plate yourself sometimes. That's how you get your own experience. But we're lucky we have these players in our team because they're going to be vital for us. It's just a great buzz. You can't wait for the game to start. That's why you're at a club like Manchester United - to be playing in games like this, in stadiums like the San Siro."

Outstanding talent O'Shea's versatility has been a godsend to his manager, who has had to juggle his resources as injuries take their toll. Playing at right-back last week, O'Shea saw at first hand the damage Kaká can do. Despite that two-goal cameo, the academy product claims the Brazilian will not be given special attention: "He's an outstanding talent. We know we'll have to be on top form to stop him, but if we concentrate too much on Kaká, the other Milan players will take advantage. You have to get the balance right."

'Confident' That is something Sir Alex has done throughout the campaign as United chase trophies on three fronts. Late recoveries against Milan then Everton FC on Saturday have put United in strong positions in Europe and the Premiership, and confidence is high as they seek to push home their advantage. "When you're losing 2-1 to a team like Milan, for the game to finish the way it did gives you great belief," said O'Shea. "You saw that as well from the weekend, how we responded to going two goals down. But that's been the case all season and we'll be looking for that to continue. When you're winning, all the little knocks you have seem to disappear and you feel really strong and confident. That's how the team is feeling and we just hope it continues."

Ferguson has faith in fair play Manchester United FC manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes the spirit in which AC Milan and his side play the game should ensure there is no repeat of the disciplinary heartache Paul Scholes and Roy Keane suffered in the semi-final of the UEFA Champions League eight years ago.

Trio on edge Both players missed United's 2-1 victory against FC Bayern München in the 1999 final after collecting yellow cards in the second leg of their last-four triumph against Juventus. With United players Scholes, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gabriel Heinze all one booking away from a suspension that would rule them out of the Athens showpiece, Sir Alex hopes history will not repeat itself. "I think it's a tragedy to miss a final," he said, as his team aim to build on last week's thrilling 3-2 victory.

'Confidence' "My biggest confidence is in AC Milan because I don't think they're a team who do anything bad to get players booked because there's no point to it. Neither team benefits because we don't play each other again. It's a semi-final so it can only help the opponents in the final. From what I've seen in the last two games against AC Milan - the last game, and the two before, two years ago [in the first knockout round] - there was absolutely no evidence of anything wrong. You only have to see the manner and spirit in which the game was played in Manchester. I think it was a credit to both sets of players and their professionalism, and I expect the same tomorrow. I'll be in Athens no matter, whether it's with United or to see the final, and I think a tournament like that should get the best players."

'Thrilling spectacle' UEFA President Michel Platini praised both clubs for the style in which the first leg was played, describing the match as a "thrilling spectacle" and a "positive advertisement for European football". They are comments Carlo Ancelotti clearly took to heart. "I'm pleased he said that because, at the moment, it is very important to represent Italian football in the best way," said the Milan coach. "We need to follow the example of other countries in order to improve the situation at home."
