Popular music can be any style of music, all that matters is that the music has a large enough following. For example, Jazz was the popular music of the 20’s and 30’s. Reggae is the popular music of Jamaica. Hip-hop is the popular music of the 80’s in America etc.
The difference is pop music is a term to describe a specific genre, while popular music is broad term which can describe many genres throughout history.
