CERMINARA FINAL FORMATTED (DO NOT DELETE) 11/12/2018 12:51 PM RIP CURRENTS: ROUGH WATER FOR END OF LIFE DECISION MAKING KATHY L. CERMINARA Every day brings news of another celebrity’s passing. In 2017 alone, comedian Jay Thomas died of cancer and country singer Glen Campbell died after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. South African rugby player Joost Heystek van der Westhuizen and American playwright, actor, and director Sam Shepard both passed away after long struggles with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.1 We don’t know if these celebrities exerted control over their medical treatment choices during their final days, but we do know that some people suffering through such drawn-out illnesses wish to do so. If they have not and cannot do that themselves, loved ones will do so for them, ideally making the decisions they would have made.

  • Flagstaff Visitor Study 2017-2018
Acknowledgements The authors would like to recognize all the people who helped to make this study possible. First, thanks go to the Flagstaff Convention & Visitors Bureau, which has been an advocate of tourism research to inform its marketing and promotion efforts. In particular, we want to thank Trace Ward, Flagstaff CVB Director, and Lori Pappas, Marketing and Public Relations Manager, for their support and participation in the project. Without the support of everyone at the CVB, this critical market research project would not have been possible. Thanks also go to Kari Roberg, Research Manager and Colleen Floyd, Director of Research at the Arizona Office of Tourism without whose help this project would also not have been possible. We want to acknowledge the help of many individuals in the Flagstaff tourism community who were key to the success of this project, including: • Little America Hotel – Susan Jennings • Flagstaff Visitor Center – Anna Good • Museum of Northern Arizona – Suzanne Shenton • Flagstaff Extreme – Rachel Buzzard • Lowell Observatory – Molly Baker • Best Western Pony Soldier Inn & Suites – Scott Grams and Mark Ross • Residence Inn by Marriott Downtown – Misty Medina • DoubleTree by Hilton Flagstaff – Belen Mendez • GreenTree Inn – Frank Benitez • The Weatherford – Klaudia Ness The dedicated staff at these locations contacted visitors, asked them to complete the survey, and collected responses. It was through their efforts that this project achieved the sample sizes needed. Finally, we extend a special thank you to all those who visited Flagstaff and agreed to share information about their experiences. Without their willingness to participate in the survey process, this report simply would not have been possible.

Voters making selections in their own branch categories list only film titles on their ballots, not the individuals responsible for the various achievements. For that reason, as well as for reasons of printing time and convenience of using this pamphlet, full credit rosters are not provided for the listed films. An exception to the above exists in the four Acting categories, where simply listing titles would not provide enough voting information. Actors Branch members filling out their Nominations ballots must indicate both titles and the particular performers they are voting for. For that reason, the Reminder List provides a listing of up to fifty cast members for each film. Pictures eligible in the Animated Feature Film, Documentary Feature and Foreign Language Film categories are also eligible in the Best Picture category, provided they meet the qualifications for the category.
