From: Reviews and Criticism of Vietnam War Theatrical and Television Dramas (http://www.lasalle.edu/library/vietnam/FilmIndex/home.htm) compiled by John K. McAskill, La Salle University ([email protected]) T4260 THANKS OF A GRATEFUL NATION (USA, 5/31/1998) [TV] Credits: director, Rod Holcomb ; writer, John Sacret Young. Cast: Ted Danson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Brian Dennehy, Marg Helgenberger. Summary: Melodrama set in the U.S. in the 1990s. The 1991 Persian Gulf War is a military triumph for the United States. But when thousands of returning veterans start to develop medical problems, it appears that the military is trying to downplay or ignore the situation. It takes perseverance on the part of military families and members of Congress to bring to light the dilemma and prompt action on the part of the government. Jim Tuite (Danson) is a retired Secret Service agent and Vietnam veteran who is reluctantly drawn into the investigation of what he comes to believe is a conspiracy to deny Gulf War veterans deserved medical treatment. CERMINARA FINAL FORMATTED (DO NOT DELETE) 11/12/2018 12:51 PM RIP CURRENTS: ROUGH WATER FOR END OF LIFE DECISION MAKING KATHY L. CERMINARA Every day brings news of another celebrity’s passing. In 2017 alone, comedian Jay Thomas died of cancer and country singer Glen Campbell died after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. South African rugby player Joost Heystek van der Westhuizen and American playwright, actor, and director Sam Shepard both passed away after long struggles with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.1 We don’t know if these celebrities exerted control over their medical treatment choices during their final days, but we do know that some people suffering through such drawn-out illnesses wish to do so. If they have not and cannot do that themselves, loved ones will do so for them, ideally making the decisions they would have made. -

At times, they seem superhuman such is their creative genius or the magnitude of their performance. But actors, artists, sculptors, musicians, and dancers are as human as the rest of us. Their bones break, their muscles fail, and their joints creak and give them pain. Perhaps they suffer more than others given the physical demands that their chosen professions often place on their bodies. While their gifts are many and varied, these artists share an intense devotion to their careers. And if they are impaired by an illness or an injury, they are equally as motivated in their desire to recover. That is why these working artists come to Hospital for Special Surgery. They know we will treat them as we do all of our patients – providing the best musculoskeletal care available in the world today. With the construction of three CA Technologies Rehabilitation new fl oors atop Hospital for Center and the Pharmacy Special Surgery due to be Department on the 9th fl oor. -

Abstract When Netflix launched in April 1998, Internet video was in its infancy. Eighteen years later, Netflix has developed into the first truly global Internet TV network. Many books have been written about the five broadcast networks – NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, and the CW – and many about the major cable networks – HBO, CNN, MTV, Nickelodeon, just to name a few – and this is the fitting time to undertake a detailed analysis of how Netflix, as the preeminent Internet TV networks, has come to be. This book, then, combines historical, industrial, and textual analysis to investigate, contextualize, and historicize Netflix's development as an Internet TV network. The book is split into four chapters. The first explores the ways in which Netflix's development during its early years a DVD-by-mail company – 1998-2007, a period I am calling "Netflix as Rental Company" – lay the foundations for the company's future iterations and successes. During this period, Netflix adapted DVD distribution to the Internet, revolutionizing the way viewers receive, watch, and choose content, and built a brand reputation on consumer-centric innovation. -

Murray Abraham (Barnard), Kate Buddeke (Jane), Laura Esterman (Mrs. Garland), Nancy Giles (Marci), Lily Gladstone (Denise), Ed Harris (Dr. Michaels), Charlotte Hope (Mom), Mark Linn- Baker (Timothy), Amy Madigan (Evangeline), Rileigh McDonald (Frannie), Kenny Mellman (Jerome), Maulik Pancholy (Alex), Rhea Perlman (Nora) and Michael Rabe (Jimmy), will lite up the star in the New York premiere of David Rabe’s Good for Otto. Rhea Perlman took over the role of Nora, after Rosie O’Donnell, became ill. Directed by Scott Elliott, this production will play a limited Off-Broadway engagement February 20 – April 1, with Opening Night on Thursday, March 8 at The Pershing Square Signature Center (The Alice Griffin Jewel Box Theatre, 480 West 42nd Street). Through the microcosm of a rural Connecticut mental health center, Tony Award-winning playwright David Rabe conjures a whole American community on the edge. Like their patients and their families, Dr. Michaels (Ed Harris), his colleague Evangeline (Amy Madigan) and the clinic itself teeter between breakdown and survival, wielding dedication and humanity against the cunning, inventive adversary of mental illness, to hold onto the need to fight – and to live. Inspired by a real clinic, Rabe finds humor and compassion in a raft of richly drawn characters adrift in a society and a system stretched beyond capacity. -
