Ryan May 2021 Examining Committee Members: Jan Fernback, Advisory Chair, Media and Communication Nancy Morris, Media and Communication Fabienne Darling-Wolf, Media and Communication Ron Becker, External Member, Miami University ABSTRACT This study considers the case of representation of transgender people and issues on American fictional television from 2004 to 2014, a period which represents a steady surge in transgender television characters relative to what came before, and prefigures a more recent burgeoning of transgender characters since 2014. The study thus positions the period of analysis as an historical period in the changing representation of transgender characters. A discourse analysis is employed that not only assesses the way that transgender characters have been represented, but contextualizes American fictional television depictions of transgender people within the broader sociopolitical landscape in which those depictions have emerged and which they likely inform. Television representations and the social milieu in which they are situated are considered as parallel, mutually informing discourses, including the ways in which those representations have been engaged discursively through reviews, news coverage and, in some cases, blogs. ii To Desmond, Oonagh and Eamonn For everything. Trauma, Dissociation, and Amnesia: Myths and Reality in Cinema and Life
Trauma, Dissociation, and Amnesia: Myths and Reality in Cinema and Life A look at the psychological responses to trauma that include dissociation and amnesia, phenomena which are often misunderstood in the media and public perception. After looking at models that explain common responses to trauma, including post-traumatic stress, traumatic amnesia, and dissociative identity disorder (formerly called multiple personality disorder), we will screen five films that portray these conditions in various contexts. All are Hollywood produced. The stories have sometimes been manipulated to add drama so as to appeal to popular audiences, which is one of the dynamics this course will examine. Session 1 / Jan 31, 2020: Lecture/discussion: An overview of the mechanisms and dynamic of memory and the ways in which it is subject to traumatic distortion, dissociations and episodes of amnesia. We will focus on understanding dissociative and amnestic responses to trauma as defensive and self-protective mechanisms. When seen in this context, behaviors that often seem bizarre begin to make sense. Session 2 / Feb 7: Prince of Tides (1991) / the screen adaptation of Pat Conroy’s portrayal of the range of responses to childhood trauma in a dysfunctional, violent family. Starring Barbra Streisand and Nick Nolte, the film was also directed and produced by Streisand. Session 3 / Feb 14: The Three Faces of Eve (1957) / The Hollywood portrayal of a real-life case of dissociative identity disorder. This is the film that brought the phenomenon of multiple personalities to public attention, was highly acclaimed when it was released, and set up beliefs about multiplicity that lasted for decades.

South African rugby player Joost Heystek van der Westhuizen and American playwright, actor, and director Sam Shepard both passed away after long struggles with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.1 We don’t know if these celebrities exerted control over their medical treatment choices during their final days, but we do know that some people suffering through such drawn-out illnesses wish to do so. If they have not and cannot do that themselves, loved ones will do so for them, ideally making the decisions they would have made.

by BWW News Desk October 18, 2014 Alan Bennett's prize-winning comedy Talking Heads will receive its central Ohio premiere when APT launches its third professional touring production with three public performances beginning on November 13-21. Talking Heads will be performed at the BalletMet Performance Space in downtown Columbus on November 13, at the First Unitarian Universalist Church in Clintonville on November 20 and at the Abbey Theater of Dublin on November 21st. All performances are at 8 pm. Linda Dorff plays "Violet," who at nearly one hundred years of age has lost some of her memory but none of her wicked sense of humor. Kerry Shanklin is "Irene," a lonely woman who writes one-too-many poison-pen letters. Anne Diehl is "Miss Fozzard," a prim, middle-aged department store saleswoman whose sore feet lead her into a rather unusual romance. All three are members of Actors Equity Association, the union of professional actors. Originally produced on the BBC in 1988 and 1998, Talking Heads is a series of twelve prize-winning dramatic monologues focusing on seemingly unremarkable people (mostly women) whose lives are nonetheless filled with tragedy, melodrama and especially comedy. Acclaimed by critics - and now included in the advanced high school curriculum in Britain - these mini-plays have become what one critic called "a British cult classic." Talking Heads was produced in the West End (the British equivalent of Broadway) in 1992 and 1998, and has been produced on professional stages all over the English-speaking world. An award-winning Off-Broadway production in 2003 ran for two hundred performances and several of the pieces have been seen on PBS's Masterpiece Theatre.
