Trauma, Dissociation, and Amnesia: Myths and Reality in Cinema and Life
Trauma, Dissociation, and Amnesia: Myths and Reality in Cinema and Life A look at the psychological responses to trauma that include dissociation and amnesia, phenomena which are often misunderstood in the media and public perception. After looking at models that explain common responses to trauma, including post-traumatic stress, traumatic amnesia, and dissociative identity disorder (formerly called multiple personality disorder), we will screen five films that portray these conditions in various contexts. All are Hollywood produced. The stories have sometimes been manipulated to add drama so as to appeal to popular audiences, which is one of the dynamics this course will examine. Session 1 / Jan 31, 2020: Lecture/discussion: An overview of the mechanisms and dynamic of memory and the ways in which it is subject to traumatic distortion, dissociations and episodes of amnesia. We will focus on understanding dissociative and amnestic responses to trauma as defensive and self-protective mechanisms. When seen in this context, behaviors that often seem bizarre begin to make sense. Session 2 / Feb 7: Prince of Tides (1991) / the screen adaptation of Pat Conroy’s portrayal of the range of responses to childhood trauma in a dysfunctional, violent family. Starring Barbra Streisand and Nick Nolte, the film was also directed and produced by Streisand. Session 3 / Feb 14: The Three Faces of Eve (1957) / The Hollywood portrayal of a real-life case of dissociative identity disorder. This is the film that brought the phenomenon of multiple personalities to public attention, was highly acclaimed when it was released, and set up beliefs about multiplicity that lasted for decades. -

gyxegsxq2ri2yvh2yp2ihqe2sgi2f y qr pive2hedes2of2humEhums3 As the summer of 2005 rolls around, we have two more Burroughs conventions on the docket, one in Chicago and one in Toronto. Information flyers are included with this issue, so we hope you can fit one or both of these events into your schedule. Meanwhile, here are some recollections by our President, Bob Hyde, on how the Dum-Dums started. This memoir was first published at the 1991 Dum- Dum in Chicago, but since some of you were not there, we publish it again. Cheers! ... “Ye Editor” GENESIS OF THE BURROUGHS BIBLIOPHILES By Bob Hyde In the beginning . Vernell Coriell started publishing THE BURROUGHS BULLETIN in 1947, and sent free copies to anyone who asked. Soon after this, he was asked to form a Burroughs fan club, and this became a topic of discussion with various fans he met in his travels over the next two years. When Vern was in California in 1949, he obtained permission from ERB, Inc. to form a fan club and to call it THE BURROUGHS BIBLIOPHILES, but not to have any official connection with ERB, Inc. It was still a matter of discussion at the 1959 WORLD SCIENCE FICTION CONVENTION in Detroit where our Pittsburgh S-F group won the election to hold the 18th (1960) World Con in Pittsburgh. This 1960 event got us off on a firm footing. Since I was a member of the Convention Committee, Vern asked me to set up an organizational meeting for him at the convention. We figured this would be the logical place where a larger group of ERB fans would be gathered. -

Visit amherstcinema.org and join our weekly e-newsletter for the latest offerings. films of Kelly Reichardt In anticipation of the March 2020 opening of her new movie, FIRST COW, Amherst Cinema is pleased to present four films from the back catalog of director Kelly Reichardt. Reichardt's dramas are small-scale symphonies; alchemical transmogrifications of the ordinary into gripping cinematic experiences. Often collaborating with the same creatives across multiple pictures, such as actor Michelle Williams and writer Jonathan Raymond, Reichardt's films turn the WENDY AND LUCY lens on those in some way at the margins of American communities. Be it a woman living out of her car in WENDY AND LUCY, a group of lost 1840s pioneers in MEEK'S CUTOFF, a reclusive ranch hand in CERTAIN WOMEN, or a hand-to-mouth ex-hippie in OLD JOY, Reichardt's characters, regardless of life circumstances, are deeply and richly human. There may be no other living filmmaker who so fully realizes Roger Ebert's assertion that "movies are the most powerful empathy machine in all the arts." All of which is to say nothing of her films' painterly cinematography, naturalistic and immersive sound design, and Reichardt's knack of scouting the perfect space for every scene, often in the wilds of the Pacific Northwest. Reichardt and her work have been honored at the Cannes Film Festival, the Venice Film Festival, the BFI MEEK'S CUTOFF London Film Festival, the Film Independent Spirit Awards, and more. -

STEEL MAGNOLIAS Artistic Team ROBERT HARLING
STEEL MAGNOLIAS Artistic Team ROBERT HARLING (Playwright) made his directorial debut with The Evening Star for Paramount, which he also wrote for the screen based on Larry McMurty’s novel. The Evening Star reunited Shirley MacLaine and Jack Nicholson and co-stars Juliette Lewis, Bill Paxton, Scott Wolf, Miranda Richardson, and Marion Ross. The Evening Star is the continuation of one of the most beloved and acclaimed movies of our time, Terms of Endearment. Before launching a successful stage and screenwriting career, Robert graduated from Tulane University School of Law, but instead of taking the bar exam, he opted to become an actor in New York. After years of productive work as an actor in voiceovers and commercials, Harling was inspired to write the highly acclaimed stage play Steel Magnolias, which was based on events from his personal life. Steel Magnolias continues to thrive in theatrical productions throughout the world. Immediately bridging a career from stage to screen, Harling adapted his original play into the popular film of the same title, which starred Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Dolly Parton, and Daryl Hannah. Over the years, Mr. Harling has become a much sought-after screenwriter: other credits, to name a few, include Soapdish, which was based on Harling’s acting experience and starred Sally Field, Whoopi Goldberg, and Robert Downey Jr., and First Wives Club for Paramount, starring Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn, and Diane Keaton. LAURA KEPLEY (Director) is in her third season as Artistic Director and has directed Cleveland Play House mainstage productions of The Good Peaches (world premiere), The Crucible, Fairfield (world premiere), The Little Foxes, Venus in Fur, Good People (also at Syracuse Stage), A Carol for Cleveland (world premiere), In the Next Room, or the vibrator play, My Name is Asher Lev and CPH readings of Roe Green Award- winning plays Soups, Stews and Casseroles: 1976, Marjorie Prime and Daphne’s Dive.
