AUGUST 2016 SUMMER DRAMA INTRIGUES AND DELIGHTS Sunday nights in the summer are reserved for must-see dramas, and Dancing on the Edge is just that, combining murder and romance with the sultry sounds of 1930s jazz. The stylish new murder mystery series, premiering Tuesdays at 8pm, beginning August 16, written and directed by Stephen Poliakoff (The Lost Prince) follows the rise and fall of the fictional Louis Lester Band, a black jazz band in 1930s London. The band becomes the toast of high society, earning approval from the Prince of Wales, despite the racism and classism they encounter — until Louis finds himself entangled in a murder case. The all-star cast includes Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) as the debonair Louis, John Goodman (O Brother, Where Art Thou?) as an affluent American entrepreneur named Masterson, and Jacqueline Bisset as socialite Lady Cremone, a performance which won her a Golden Globe. Masterpiece favorites Matthew Goode (Downton Abbey) and Joanna Vanderham (The Paradise) also star in the eight-part series. “Dancing on the Edge is a thing of beauty to watch,” states The Hollywood Reporter. Add to this the Kingdom’s pristine natural beauty, rich history and vibrant cultural heritage, and you have a setting which offers photographic opportunities at every turn. A select few will have the chance to join acclaimed photographer Basil Pao on a photographic tour of Bhutan in February 2014. Renowned for his work with Michael Palin, Basil took the photos for the books that accompanied every one of Palin’s BBC travel documentaries from the late 1980s onwards. These include ‘Pole to Pole’, ‘Full Circle’, ‘Hemingway Adventure’, ‘Sahara’, ‘Himalaya’, ‘New Europe’ and ‘Brazil’. Around The World In Eighty Days was to become around the world in twenty years. I had intended to stop once we reached the unyielding doors of the Reform Club and return to a normal life – slapping people with fish, running over Kevin Kline in a steamroller and singing the Lumberjack Song in German to selected audiences. The attempt to circle the world in less than three months without ever leaving its surface had, I felt, offered me enough adventure to last a lifetime. But something had happened on all those long sea trips, on battered cargo boats and creaking container ships, on heaving Indian trains and racing dog sleds in the Rockies. Though I had travelled with a course of painful injections and bag full of pills and potions, nothing had protected me against the overpowering, aching desire to do the whole thing again. It was as if a door had been opened through which I could see a big beckoning world. I could see North Poles and South Poles and Equators and Tropics and rapids and volcanoes and it was all much more exciting than slapping people with fish.
