Wonderful Stuff. Palin is brilliant.By CustomerThis is truly exceptional. It was a wonderful TV series, and the book adds detail that they couldn't squeeze into the episodes, as well as more of Palin's wonderfully wry sense of humour. If you like travel books, or you like books about other cultures, or you just like a good non-fiction read - you could certainly do a hell of a lot worse than this one.Seriously, someone needs to find a way to get Michael Palin and David Attenborough to breed. That is probably about the only way anyone is going to come up with a better documentary.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. It took me back.By Darcy HooverHaving spent over a year travelling and living through most of Palin's Sahara route, I am very impressed with how he captured the magic of the area. Mr. Palin is funny, respectful and insightful. A very enjoyable read that took me back to the desert.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Disappointed.By peteMostly superficial and touristy to a fault. Very disappointed. What he didn't undersatnd, he too often disparaged. Any weekend tourist can do that. Michael Palin is off again, this time to the seemingly desolate Sahara Desert. There's no easy way across, as he and his team discover on their most challenging expedition yet. From a starting point in Gibralter, Michael makes his way to Morocco, then over the Atlas Mountains to the little-known countries of Mauritania, Mali, and Chad. He travels on the longest train in the world, meets with the Paris-Dakar Rally in the middle of nowhere, and sees the world's largest mud mosque before arriving in Timbuktu. Then it's a journey with nomadic herders and a camel caravan, to Algeria and a recently re-opened Libya. Finally, Michael returns to the classical remains of Tunisia, where Life of Brian was filmed and he was crucified. The mysterious, barren desert is revealed to be a place full of people, landscapes, and stories, a vibrant land with a history of civilisation, trade, and conquest stretching from the ancient Egyptians to the oil-rich Islamic republics of today. From Publishers WeeklyFifty years after he was given his first book, Tales from the Arabian Nights, consummate traveler and Monty Python founding member Palin trekked to Francophone Africa, believing that the Sahara embodies "the thin line between survival and destruction, the power to take life or to transform it." Fortunately for his readers, the Sahara seems to have transformed Palin (Around the World in 80 Days, Full Circle). This tie-in to the Bravo series airing in April consists of Palin's journal entries, full of his trademark self-deprecating humor (writing about the far- removed city of Djenne, which a British tour group nonetheless infiltrated, Palin confesses that "I know I shouldn't feel this way, but when I'm asked if I've ever been to Stoke-on-Trent all my romantic illusions of desert travel begin to wilt"). But Palin is also a piquant political observer (he notes that African women may be "by nature more direct, more open, more honest and considerably less submissive than their menfolk expect them to be"), and the Sahara's exoticism frequently inspires him to craft beautiful descriptions (the bizarre "battleship-grey" baobab trees "look like some prehistorical arboreal throwback, gnarled and twisted like old prize-fighters"). Readers looking for engaging, detailed insight to the Sahara will hit paydirt here, although newcomers to Palin's work may find themselves dismayed by his ubiquitous appearance in the photographs that dot nearly every page of this book. 175 color and bw photos.Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc. 'One of the most fascinating aspects of his account is the range of cultures that have left their mark on the area, from Roman amphitheatres to enormous natural gas pipelines, and from mud-brick mosques to French railway stations. Palin's brisk, wry narrative also includes stunning photographs by Basil Pao.' THE SUNDAY TIMES (5/10/03) 'Entertaining account of Michael Palin's journey across the Sahara that ties in with the TV series'. WOMAN HOME (October 2003) '... an epic voyage that uncovers a surprisingly large and diverse range of cultures and memerising landscapes... Sahara is a witty insight into this fascinating region. The sardonic humour of his Monty Python days stays with him throughout the trip and helps to provide a refreshingly alternative view of this alluring part of the world. If you've enjoyed Palin's other books you'll love this. And if you haven't, make Sahara your first introduction to his writing.' AUGUST 2016 SUMMER DRAMA INTRIGUES AND DELIGHTS Sunday nights in the summer are reserved for must-see dramas, and Dancing on the Edge is just that, combining murder and romance with the sultry sounds of 1930s jazz. The stylish new murder mystery series, premiering Tuesdays at 8pm, beginning August 16, written and directed by Stephen Poliakoff (The Lost Prince) follows the rise and fall of the fictional Louis Lester Band, a black jazz band in 1930s London. The band becomes the toast of high society, earning approval from the Prince of Wales, despite the racism and classism they encounter — until Louis finds himself entangled in a murder case. The all-star cast includes Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) as the debonair Louis, John Goodman (O Brother, Where Art Thou?) as an affluent American entrepreneur named Masterson, and Jacqueline Bisset as socialite Lady Cremone, a performance which won her a Golden Globe. Masterpiece favorites Matthew Goode (Downton Abbey) and Joanna Vanderham (The Paradise) also star in the eight-part series. “Dancing on the Edge is a thing of beauty to watch,” states The Hollywood Reporter. Sharing a similar sentiment, British outlet Cultbox proclaims, “With its blend of compelling storytelling, sumptuous period production values and toe-tapping music, Dancing on the Edge has us hooked for what looks to be a thrilling ride.” Want more drama? The highly anticipated ninth and final season of Inspector Lewis on Masterpiece will premiere on Wednesday, August 17 at 9pm. For the last time, Inspector Lewis (Kevin Whately) and CS Hathaway (Laurence Fox) will investigate new cases of murder and other crimes in the academic haven of Oxford, together struggling with personal dilemmas and their future on the force.

These include ‘Pole to Pole’, ‘Full Circle’, ‘Hemingway Adventure’, ‘Sahara’, ‘Himalaya’, ‘New Europe’ and ‘Brazil’. 80 Days_2nd Proof_01.qxd 13/5/09 12:22 Page iii Around the world in 80 days MICHAEL PALIN 80 Days_2nd Proof_01.qxd 13/5/09 12:22 Page 1 Preface to the new edition Little did I imagine, as I was turned away from the doors of the Reform Club in London after completing my circumnavigation of the globe back in December 1988, that far from being an end to my travelling career, this was just the beginning. Around The World In Eighty Days was to become around the world in twenty years. I had intended to stop once we reached the unyielding doors of the Reform Club and return to a normal life – slapping people with fish, running over Kevin Kline in a steamroller and singing the Lumberjack Song in German to selected audiences. The attempt to circle the world in less than three months without ever leaving its surface had, I felt, offered me enough adventure to last a lifetime. But something had happened on all those long sea trips, on battered cargo boats and creaking container ships, on heaving Indian trains and racing dog sleds in the Rockies. Though I had travelled with a course of painful injections and bag full of pills and potions, nothing had protected me against the overpowering, aching desire to do the whole thing again. It was as if a door had been opened through which I could see a big beckoning world. I could see North Poles and South Poles and Equators and Tropics and rapids and volcanoes and it was all much more exciting than slapping people with fish.

More than 100 years later the city’s association with cinema continues to evolve, and Bradford International Film Festival remains at the very heart of it. The Festival’s reputation is growing. Bradford has become a byword for exciting, adventurous programming – a showcase for the new, the ground-breaking, the unusual and the obscure. In 2008 our line-up is once again constructed from a disparate mix of fresh material and tributes in the form of retrospectives. Thus Bradford straddles the cinema of the past and the cinema of the present while, always, looking forward to the future. This year special seasons are devoted to Michael Palin, Kenneth Branagh, Julien Temple, Leslie Norman and Christian Petzold. We will also be joined by Barry Norman, Patrick Doyle and Mike Figgis. Together they represent an incredible, unique cast list. Balanced with the films themselves – shorts and features – the offer is some- what overwhelming.

These titles offer narrative accounts of the authors’ travels, contributing unique perspectives on the many and diverse cultures throughout the world. The bibliography encompasses travel literature produced from the 1940’s through the present, cov- ering destinations around the globe.
