MAizeuianJusellm PUBLISHED BY THE AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY CENTRAL PARK WEST AT 79TH STREET, NEW YORK 24, N.Y. NUMBER 2202 DECEMBER I5, I964 Results of the Puritan-American Museum of Natural History Expedition to Western Mexico 20. The Recent Mollusks: Gastropoda: Harpidae, Vasidae, and Volutidae BY WILLIAM K. EMERSON' INTRODUCTION The present paper continues a study of the Recent marine mollusks collected in west Mexican waters during the course of the expedition. Previous reports considered the family Conidae (Emerson and Old, 1962), the superfamily Cypraeacea (Emerson and Old, 1963a), and the super- families Strombacea, Tonnacea, and Cymatiacea (Emerson and Old, 1963b). The present report treats the gastropod families Harpidae, Vasi- dae, and Volutidae. Specimens were taken by shore and intertidal collecting, by skin div- ing, and by dredging from a small skiff and from the schooner "Puritan." Dredging operations were restricted to depths no greater than 50 fathoms. The itinerary and descriptions of the collecting stations were recorded in the general account of the expedition (Emerson, 1958). The present collection contains three of the four eastern Pacific species that represent the families covered by this paper. An attempt is made to 1 Chairman, Department of Living Invertebrates, the American Museum of Natural His- tory. 2 AMERICAN MUSEUM NOVITATES NO. 2202 determine for the west Mexican region the modern and fossil distributions ofthese species. A new species of Vasum is described from the Pliocene de- posits of the Imperial formation of Imperial County, California. • The Paleontograph______
__________The Paleontograph________ A newsletter for those interested in all aspects of Paleontology Volume 5 Issue 1 March, 2016 _________________________________________________________________ From Your Editor Welcome to our latest issue. I hope you enjoyed the holidays. If you are anything like me, you are looking forward to Spring. We've had a mild winter here in CO. Weather is different than the east coast. While the nights are colder, the days are warmer. It's a nice change for me. I finally have my fossil lab up and running and I am spending my days, or part thereof, working off my backlog of fossils. It has been a couple of months since our last issue but Bob has kept writing and so we have an interesting issue for you to enjoy. The Paleontograph was created in 2012 to continue what was originally the newsletter of The New Jersey Paleontological Society. The Paleontograph publishes articles, book reviews, personal accounts, and anything else that relates to Paleontology and fossils. Feel free to submit both technical and non-technical work. We try to appeal to a wide range of people interested in fossils. Articles about localities, specific types of fossils, fossil preparation, shows or events, museum displays, field trips, websites are all welcome. This newsletter is meant to be one by and for the readers. Issues will come out when there is enough content to fill an issue. I encourage all to submit contributions. It will be interesting, informative and fun to read. It can become whatever the readers and contributors want it to be, so it will be a work in progress.

Since the work of J.J. Heckel (1846-1849), the number of valid species has increased significantly and the systematic status of many of the species has changed, and reorganization and updating of the published information has become essential. Here we take the opportunity to provide a new and updated checklist of freshwater fishes of Iran based on literature and taxon occurrence data obtained from natural history and new fish collections. This article lists 288 species in 107 genera, 28 families, 22 orders and 3 classes reported from different Iranian basins. However, presence of 23 reported species in Iranian waters needs confirmation by specimens.

  • Mapping the Creation-Evolution Debate in Public Life
MAPPING THE CREATION-EVOLUTION DEBATE IN PUBLIC LIFE by ANDREW JUDSON HART (Under the Direction of Edward Panetta) ABSTRACT Evolution versus creation is a divisive issue as religion is pitted against science in public discourse. Despite mounting scientific evidence in favor of evolution and legal decisions against the teaching of creationism in public schools, the number of advocates who still argue for creationist teaching in the science curriculum of public schools remains quite large. Public debates have played a key role in the creationist movement, and this study examines public debates between creationists and evolutionists over thirty years to track trends and analyze differences in arguments and political style in an attempt to better understand why creationism remains salient with many in the American public. In order to obtain a hypothesis of relationships, we used maximum parsimony and model-based methods with 4435 bp of DNA sequences from mitochondrial and nuclear genes for 179 taxa (130 genera and eight out-groups). We estimated dates of origin and diversification for major clades, and performed a biogeographic analysis using a dispersal–vicariance framework, in order to infer a scenario of the biogeographical history of the group. We found long-branch taxa that affected the accuracy of all three methods. Moreover, different methods produced incongruent phylogenies. We found that Satyrini appeared around 42 Mya in either the Neotropical or the Eastern Palaearctic, Oriental, and/or Indo-Australian regions, and underwent a quick radiation between 32 and 24 Mya, during which time most of its component subtribes originated. Several factors might have been important for the diversification of Satyrini: the ability to feed on grasses; early habitat shift into open, non-forest habitats; and geographic bridges, which permitted dispersal over marine barriers, enabling the geographic expansions of ancestors to new environ- ments that provided opportunities for geographic differentiation, and diversification.

Fundación La Salle de Ciencias Naturales. Apartado 144 Porlama,. Isla de Margarita, Venezuela. ABSTRACT Marine endolithic and wood-boring bivalve mollusks living in rocks, corals, wood, and shells were surveyed on the Caribbean coast of Venezuela at Isla Margarita between 2004 and 2008. These surveys were supplemented with boring mollusk data from malacological collections in Venezuelan museums. A total of 571 individuals, corresponding to 3 orders, 4 families, 15 genera, and 20 species were identified and analyzed. The species with the widest distribution were: Leiosolenus aristatus which was found in 14 of the 24 localities, followed by Leiosolenus bisulcatus and Choristodon robustus, found in eight and six localities, respectively. The remaining species had low densities in the region, being collected in only one to four of the localities sampled. The total number of species reported here represents 68% of the boring mollusks that have been documented in Venezuelan coastal waters. This study represents the first work focused exclusively on the examination of the cryptofaunal mollusks of Isla Margarita, Venezuela. KEY WORDS Shipworms, cryptofauna, Teredinidae, Pholadidae, Gastrochaenidae, Mytilidae, Petricolidae, Margarita Island, Isla Margarita Venezuela, boring bivalves, endolithic. INTRODUCTION The lithophagans (Mytilidae) are among the Bivalve mollusks from a range of families have more recognized boring mollusks.
