Halvt gömda av utomjordiskt distade gitarrer och sjövilda solon hittar man ändå alltid de sötaste melodier och mest vilsna kärlekstexter. I augusti kommer Dinosaur Jr till Skandinavien. Helt fantastiskt! Efter att ha lagt ned sitt hardcoreband från high school, Deep Wound, startade J Mascis och Lou Barlow, tillsammans med trummisen Murph, Dinosaur Jr i mitten av 80-talet. En lågbudgetinspelad debutskiva senare och några resor fram och tillbaka mellan Massachusetts och New York, så var deras största fan Thurston Moore från Sonic Youth. Med hans inflytande skrev de kontrakt med Black Flags skivbolag SST där de släppte monumentala "You're Living All Over Me". Det efterföljande albumet "Bug" var det sista som Lou Barlow medverkade på innan han och J Mascis slutade att tycka om varandra. Bandet fortsatte utan Barlow, som istället fokuserade på sitt Sebadoh. Det tog nästan 20 år innan de tog sina första trevande steg tillbaka mot varann och spelande in "Beyond" med de tre originalmedlemmarna åter samlade och i osannolik toppform. När Sebadoh spelade på KB förra året tittade J Mascis, som också var ute på vägarna, förbi bara för att säga hej på sin återfunna kompis. Kan det bli bättre? I know nothing about this music series, but I know it’s very to close to the beach. Beach, outdoor music, one last chance at redeeming summer. Sister Sparrow are an eight-piece funk / soul act hailing from Brooklyn and seem like they would be perfect in at sunset. So where should one get dinner in Westerly? As a true Rhode Islander, I’ve never been — too far to not have a casino. 2. Tuesday, August 19: Arcade Fire, Antibalas, Dan Deacon; $40 and up?; 7pm; All ages; XFinity Center (GREAT WOODS), Mansfield, Mass. What price were tickets set at? No clue. Clicking on the venue’s site directs you to the Ticket Liquidator. Thanks for everything, Ticketmaster. Anyway, being a fan of Arcade Fire is much like being a fan of Kanye West in that you have to consistently be an apologist for their actions and words. And this tour has ruffled some feathers with the band’s instructions that patrons should wear formal attire or costume. I will be wearing my iron-on tuxedo t-shirt to the 15,000 plus Mansfield costume ball. The huge crowd should be an excellent contrast in high concept art piece meets suburb culture.

Heavy-metal in the 1970s was Blue Oyster Cult, Aerosmith, Kiss, AC/DC, Journey, Boston, Rush, and it was the most theatrical and brutal of rock genres. It was not easy to reconcile this genre with the anti-heroic ethos of the punk era. It could have seemed almost impossible to revive that genre, that was slowly dying, in an era that valued the exact opposite of machoism, and that was producing a louder and noisier genre, hardcore. Instead, heavy metal began its renaissance in the same years of the new wave, capitalizing on the same phenomenon of independent labels. Credit goes largely to a British contingent of bands, that realized how they could launch a "new wave of British heavy metal" during the new wave of rock music. Motorhead (1), formed by ex-Hawkwind bassist Ian "Lemmy" Kilminster, were the natural bridge between heavy metal, Stooges/MC5 and punk-rock. They played demonic, relentless rock'n'roll at supersonic speed: Iron Horse (1977), Metropolis (1979), Bomber (1979), Jailbait (1980), Iron Fist (1982), etc.

Album of the Week: Dinosaur Jr.’S Give a Glimpse Of
Album Of The Week: Dinosaur Jr.’s Give A Glimpse Of What Yer Not How exactly can a band that started out in the ’80s be considered a breath of fresh air now? Well you’ll have to start listening to what Amherst, Massachusetts, sludgy alternative rock trio Dinosaur Jr. have been putting out since the original trio of guitarist J Mascis, bassist Lou Barlow and drummer Murph got back together in 2005. Since then the band has released four stellar albums including their most recent, Give A Glimpse Of What Yer Not, that was released on August 5. It still has that trademark shred from the band’s beginnings in the ’80s and the polish from the band’s releases in the ’90s. What makes it different than the other post-reunion albums is that the song structures are a bit more abstract. Give A Glimpse Of What Yer Not is intriguing with how everything is set up. A few of the tracks in the beginning are loud, abrasive and upbeat. Then it gets changed up with a few songs that are sludge ballads alternating with other diverse material. It makes Dinosaur Jr.’s new album very unique, but don’t worry — there are still plenty of stunning solos courtesy of Mascis. The trio isn’t afraid to take chances on themselves musically and for a band with a dedicated and cult-like fan base, that takes some guts. Dinosaur Jr. have always been one of the most consistent acts out there today. If someone likes music that’s heavy, energetic and emphatic, then chances are they’re a fan of the trio from Amherst.
