POWERLORD - The Awakening (NEW*US CLASSIC*EXCITER*JAG PANZER) - 13 Euro Shadow Kingdom Records 2014 - Brandnew US Metal Classic rerelease - in the vein of Exciter, old Jag Panzer, early Savatage (Sirens). Powerlord was one of those bands that popped up out of nowhere and completely fell off into obscurity. Out of all of the rare 80's US Metal gems, Powerlord is arguably the very best at what they do. They straddle somewhere between Savage Grace and Slayer. So to describe their sound, we would call it Speed/Thrash Metal, but done extremely professional and the songs were written with such precision. You can just tell these guys were perfectionists back then and as far as the songwriting, this album is completely flawless. This is was 80's Metal was all about. If they would have gotten lucky, they could have been a much bigger band back then, but with the flood of Thrash Metal after Slayer and came out, they fell quickly into the cracks of obscurity.

The booklet contains a series of abstracted images set beside the printed lyrics marking an imagined metaphoric metaphysical path through the door. Through four songs, the band delivers their own take on traditional heavy metal, topped with killer, totally unique vocals. It’s definitely a sound to fall in love with, as it is fresh, twisted and original. Listening to this EP, you’ll get intensity, melodies and an overall inspired performance from all parts involved. King Diamond and Mercyful Fate are obvious references, but a song like the opener “All Hail Evil” also leans a bit towards newer acts like Sweden’s Portrait, and even Enforcer, the latter mainly due to the energy and some of the guitar work. The song is an intense and almost hectic opening tune, musically with lots of NWOBHM-references, great guitar work and some cool bass lines creating a solid foundation for the track along with the strong and natural drums. On top of it all you’ll find a very impressive and inspired vocal performance from vocalist extraordinaire Logon Saton.
