Mashonaland Central Province Zimbabwe Vulnerability Assessment Committee (ZimVAC) 2020 Rural Livelihoods Assessment Report Foreword The Zimbabwe Vulnerability Assessment Committee (ZimVAC) under the coordination of the Food and Nutrition Council, successfully undertook the 2020 Rural Livelihoods Assessment (RLA), the 20th since its inception. ZimVAC is a technical advisory committee comprised of representatives from Government, Development Partners, UN, NGOs, Technical Agencies and the Academia. In its endeavour to ‘promote and ensure adequate food and nutrition security for all people at all times’, the Government of Zimbabwe has continued to exhibit its commitment for reducing food and nutrition insecurity, poverty and improving livelihoods amongst the vulnerable populations in Zimbabwe through operationalization of Commitment 6 of the Food and Nutrition Security Policy (FNSP). As the country is grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic, this assessment was undertaken at an opportune time as there was an increasing need to urgently collect up to date food and nutrition security data to effectively support the planning and implementation of actions in a timely and responsive manner. The findings from the RLA will also go a long way in providing local insights into the full impact of the Corona virus on food and nutrition security in this country as the spread of the virus continues to evolve differently by continent and by country. In addition, the data will be of great use to Government, development partners, programme planners and communities in the recovery from the pandemic, providing timely information and helping monitor, prepare for, and respond to COVID-19 and any similar future pandemics. Thematic areas covered in this report include the following: education, food and income sources, income levels, expenditure patterns and food security, COVID-19 and gender based violence, among other issues. -

The district is occasionally affected by floods caused by overflowing rivers and, partly, by backwaters from the downstream Cahora Bassa hydropower dam. This flooding affects soil properties due to rapid moisture fluxes and deposition of fine sediments and nutrients. Despite the hazards associated with the floods, the riparian communities benefit from high moisture levels and the nutrients deposited in the floodplains. The residual moisture after flooding events enables the cultivation of crops just after the rainfall season with harvesting taking place around July-August. These periods are outside the normal rainfed agricultural season elsewhere in Zimbabwe where such flooding is not experienced. This study sought to investigate the soil moisture and nutrient dynamics in relation to natural and man-made flood occurrence in the Middle Zambezi valley of Zimbabwe. Twelve trial pits were dug using manual methods along four transects at three different study sites across the floodplain during the period April 2011 to May 2012. At each trial pit, three soil samples were collected at depths of 0.2 m, 0.5 m and 1.2 m and these were analysed for moisture content, nutrient status, pH, texture and electrical conductivity. -

Since they are domesticized versions of wild plants growing naturally throughout the continent, they are excellently adapted to the climate of the region they are growing in. Furthermore, they are rich in minerals and micronutrients and have therefore a large potential for alleviating hunger and malnutrition in Africa. Although they have a significant role in the traditional diets of many countries, economic development and change of values challenges the use of these vegetables. Little is known about consumer attitudes towards AIVs. Therefore, we analyse determinants of AIVs demand based on a consumer survey in Zimbabwe. The survey was conducted in four districts of varying prevalence of food insecurity. We analyse the relationship between household income and AIVs consumption. Second, we examine the effects of the geographical location of the household as an indicator of the socio-economic environment it is living it. Third, we explore consumers’ attitudes. Regions of lowest economic development and highest food insecurity show highest levels and variations in AIVs consumption. -

2019 Gonarezhou Hunting Concession Boundries
GONAREZHOU SAFARI AREAS IN SOUTH EASTERN ZIMBABWE The Gonarezhou Safari areas are hunting areas that are open/un fenced areas adjoined to the Gonarezhou National or Kruger National Park or the Mozambique National Park, these are massive areas made up of different concessions that form part of the collective Gonarezhou Hunting concessions, the ones that TAS offers are as follows from North to South. · Mahenye is a Gonarezhou hunting area that is situated on the North Eastern Boundary of the Gonarezhou National Park and has a further boundary with Mozambique. The Mahenye riverine jess bush including forests along the river is perfect territory for elephant bulls and buffalo bulls, this area has produced very big ivory in the past, the concession changed hands in 2018 allowing Take Aim Safaris the opportunity to market and sell these sought after Gonarezhou hunts, there has been very little to no hunting here for the last 10 years. The Northern parts of the Gonarezhou National Park that are adjoined and unfenced to Mahenye have this highest concentration of elephant bulls in the entire park, this is due to the volume of water being high and available feeding being high, there is lots of water on the hunting area side. Keys species of Mahenye are elephant, buffalo, hippo and crocodile. Mahenye borders on Mozambique and onto the Gonarezhou National Park in its North Eastern region of the park. The confluence of the Save River and Runde River is within the Mahenye Safari area including many large islands formed by the confluence of these rivers, most famous of these islands is Muchemeni Island, and also well known within the area is Chilo Gorge. -

In order to under- stand the abundance, distribution, and population trends of Nile crocodiles in Gonarezhou National Park (GNP), south- eastern Zimbabwe, we carried out 4 annual aerial surveys, using a Super Cub aircraft, along 3 major rivers, namely, Save, Runde and Mwenezi, between 2008 and 2011. Our results show that Runde River was characterised by a significant increase in Nile crocodile abundance whereas both Save and Mwenezi rivers were characterised by non-significant increases in Nile crocodile abundance. Overall, we recorded a significant increase in total Nile crocodile population in the three major rivers of the GNP. The non-significant increase in Nile crocodiles in the Mwenezi and Save rivers was likely due to habitat loss, through siltation of large pools, and conflicts with humans, among other factors. We suggest that GNP management should consider halting crocodile egg collection in rivers with low crocodile populations and continuously monitor the crocodile population in the park.
