MGA and MGB: Aussie doctor and the world's fastest ‘Super Bee’ 27 September 2018 By MarkOastler Doctor Iain Corness and the ‘Super Bee’ were a potent combination, reaching the peak of their performance in 1971. Here they’re in full flight at Sydney’s Warwick Farm in 1970. Love the decal on the windshield, which reads 'The Civilised Sports Car' - it was anything but civilised by the time Corness had finished with it! The MGA and MGB were the ultimate in MG sports cars during the halcyon days of Australian production sports car racing (ProdSports) in the 1950s and 1960s. In fact, at one stage it was claimed that a locally-developed MGB was the fastest Prodsports MGB in the world. That bold statement, by none other than parent company British Leyland, was in 1971 when Queensland doctor Iain Corness and his hand-built ‘Super Bee’ were part of the company’s factory-backed racing team called the British Leyland Young Lions. In reality, Leyland’s claim would have been difficult to authenticate, given that Australia was little more than an international backwater at the time and MGBs were competing successfully in other much larger markets including the UK and USA. Even so, by 1971 the Super Bee was more highly developed than even factory-backed MGBs competing in the UK, given that it was equipped with a unique locally developed DOHC engine. And after several seasons it was continuing to set new lap records, with one remaining unbeaten for eight years. On some tracks it was recording similar times to the top V8 Mustang touring cars of its day. -

Wally aboard the Denny Hulme McLaren M23 Work is well in hand for next season. The calendar has been finalised and the tracks booked and HRC are just waiting to finalise with the classes what events they wish to run at before we announce the full list of classes running at each event. Some events are already full with eleven classes which is really the limit we can run at a two day meeting. Some interesting projects coming up including a possible new motoring TV show (f we can get support) and a rerun of the B & H 500. HRC are endeavouring to run Classic meetings and Mixed Meetings as separate events with the classic meetings with older cars and hopefully cars with COD’s. Unfortunately for commercial reasons we have to have some non-classic classes at these meeting to make them viable. The classic meetings are the Icebreaker 28/29th September Hampton Downs, Tasman Revival Hampton Downs 25/26th January, Tasman Revival Pukekohe 22/23rd February, Paul Fahey NZ Legends of Speed 21/22nd March Hampton Downs, Jack Nazer Classic Taupo 25/26th April. At these we will run BMW classes and ERC and while COD’s for these classes are not mandatory the cars competing in most cases could get COD’s. Race meeting organisers do need classes to combine as entry fees cannot keep rising. -

Not content to stay stagnate, our Club Racing program continues to evolve. In 2011, we began the BFGoodrich Tires SCCA Super Tour program. With the help of our partner, BFGoodrich Tires, the series expanded to nine events for 2012, and included one special event in each division. These race weekends featured elements that aren’t always available at National Races, adding to the competitors’ experi- ence. We also unveiled the Majors program in the middle part of the coun- try this season, giving racers in the Rocky Mountain, Midwest and Southwest Divisions an opportunity to run for a larger championship without having to travel the country. -

Major D. G. M. MURPHY AM [1914 – 2005] Major Murphy was President of the Club 1954-55 Douglas Gordon Murtagh Murphy was born in Elsternwick, Victoria, on 17 August 1914 – son of Murtagh Robert Murphy and Kathleen Mary (née Bell). He had two siblings, Peter, and Margaret. He was educated at Tocumwal Public School, Ivanhoe Grammar School, and at Hay War Memorial High School (NSW). He was awarded a Scholarship to Sydney Teachers College, Sydney in 1930, and completed a Bachelor of Economics at the University of Sydney in 1938. We thank the History Interest Group and other volunteers who have researched and prepared these Notes The series will be progressively expanded and developed. They are intended as casual reading for the benefit of Members, who are encouraged to advise of any inaccuracies in the material. File: HIG/Biographies/MURPHY Page 1 In March 1941 Douglas became engaged to Agnes Millicent "Nancy"(née McWhirter) [2014 - 2017] of Brisbane, and they were married on 5 June 1941 at Larrakeyah Barracks, Darwin - where he had been serving as Adjutant of the Darwin Mobile Force. They had four children: • Diana Margaret (b.1944) who became a teacher. • Derek James Murtagh (b.1946) who became a stockbroker, barrister and businessman in both Hong Kong and Australia. • Susan Mary (b.1948) • Douglas Robert Murtagh (b.1951) who became a barrister and later Queens’s Counsel in Brisbane Douglas joined the Army and graduated from the Royal Military College, Duntroon in 1939. He initially served in the Infantry including Darwin Mobile Force; and later transferred to Signals (including in 3 Division in Melbourne in 1942) before appointment to staff positions. -

Profile: Allan Moffat by James Cockington of Sidney Morning Herald – October 15, 2008 Former Bathurst champion Allan Moffat. It's a little-known fact that Canadian-born Allan Moffat, regarded as one of Australia's motor racing legends, briefly studied politics in Melbourne. "My father was working here with Massey Ferguson," he says. "In 1962 I was given a marketing cadetship with Volkswagen Australia on the condition that we do an outside degree. I'd always been interested in politics so I enrolled in economics and politics at Monash University, which had just opened." The deal was the cadets were supposed to turn up at university at 4pm twice a week. That didn't happen a lot in Moffat's case, he admits, because that same year he bought his first car - a Triumph TR3A - and decided to race it. His first race was at Calder. "It was my road car as well. I'd bought it on hire purchase, so I couldn't race it at two meetings in a row in case the insurance company was checking the programs and noticed my name turning up all the time," he says. Racing soon took over from his studies and Moffat received a letter from the chancellor suggesting he not return for the second year of his degree. He now wishes he'd kept that letter. It changed the direction of his life. He returned home to Toronto and in 1964 drove over the border to watch the Indianapolis 500 race. While sitting in the grandstand he decided then and there that he too would be a professional driver. -

The Ex - Piers Courage, John Coombs 1967 McLaren M4A Chassis Number: M4A/2 • One of two works cars run by McLaren in 1967 for the European Formula 2 season, long before customer M4As became available. Owned by John Coombs and driven by Piers Courage while he was also a works BRM Formula 1 driver, scoring 2nd place at Zandvoort and 3rd at Hockenheim. • Bought by Courage in time for the 1968 Tasman Series, where he scored a phenomenal victory by a huge margin in the final round, beating the likes of Jim Clark in a Lotus 49. Courage also took a 2nd and three 3rds to finish 3rd in the series. • Sold to Australia at the conclusion of the Tasman Series in 1968 and raced successfully there by subsequent owners before returning to Europe in 1991. • Recently maintained by Speedsport, with Michael O’Brien taking victory at Cadwell Park in HSCC Classic Racing Cars. Benefitting from limited use on the Geoff Richardson built Cosworth FVA engine, 2017 fuel bag tanks and 2018 FIA HTPs. • A significant and fabulous McLaren in which you can race at some of the best circuits in Europe with Historic Formula 2 and in England with HSCC Classic Racing Cars and Aurora XL, while also being the pride of any collection. Formed in 1963 by New Zealander Bruce McLaren, McLaren Motor Racing has become a household name thanks to the continued presence and success in Formula 1. Bruce had begun his Formula 1 career as a driver, competing for Cooper alongside Jack Brabham. McLaren took the first of three Grand Prix wins for Cooper in 1959, as the youngest victor to that point at just 22, and finished second in the 1960 World Championship. -
