Find us on: facebook 2 www.hrcc.org.au Editorial This edition brings you 4 extra pages and even then, it was a squeeze to get all the content I had to fit into 16 pages. You can read about the AGM with the HRCC President’s annual report, the Christmas dinner was fantastic and it is covered here, race reports from Claude Ciccotelli and Mike Gehde, a farewell by race driver Bill Norman and sadly a tribute following the passing of motorsport legend John Harvey. But wait there’s more…. Well, a flyer to remind everyone that the February TTT & SuperSprint weekend is not for away with entries expected to open late Dec or early Jan. And another reminder that membership for 2021 is due for renewal Wishing you all compliments of the season. Stay safe and healthy Ian Welsh

Find us on: facebook 3 www.hrcc.org.au HRCCQ PRESiDENT’S ANNUAL REPORT As delivered at the 2020 AGM Good evening to you all. Around about a year ago I stood before you at our 2019 AGM meeting and outlined the following for 2020 in the President’s Report. Our events calendar in 2020 is looking as robust as ever, we will again run Triple T Day and Sprints in February Autumn Historic Warwick in May Winter Noosa Hillclimb in June Historic Queensland in July Summer Noosa Hillclimb in November As they say, the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry Covid-19 or rather government responses world-wide to the virus put paid to a great deal of motorsport locally, nationally, and internationally. Regardless, we managed to get two events done this year, Triple T Day and Sprints in February, and our recent “No Frills Historic Warwick.” Now it must be recognised that these events would not have occurred without the determination and bloody hard work of the HRCC management and race committees. And I might add, their partners that support them and support our club, on an ongoing and often unrecognised basis. A hell of a lot of work went on behind the scenes for the last event, just making it happen. In particular, the Covid-19 compliance. They all deserve a big round of applause for their efforts. Now this year the HRCC Management Committee decided not to let this enforced hiatus put club’s visions on hold. As you are aware, we asked members for comments on 10 objectives we believed are necessary to move the club forward in the 21st century. We received great positive and supportive feedback and responses to the suggestions from members. Well done club! To recount these objectives • A Parts and Service Reference Booklet for members and sponsors. • Identify and appoint a suitable club patron. • Sponsor a charity to improve our clubs standing in the community. • To establish and implement HRCC Management Code of Conduct. • To address the short and long term financial security for the club. • The diversification of our club membership for the future of historic motor sport, to grow we need to encourage younger competitors and female competitors, as well as those who have been traditionally interested in the sport. • Obtain government participation and promotion in out events and processes. • Establish a base for our club with HRCC clubrooms, preferably one that earns income and can meet our needs for storage and administration. • Increase events and competitor numbers. • Develop new and expand stakeholder partnerships. Now I could talk for hours on each one, but you will be pleased to know I will not. Nearly all of these objectives have commenced in one form or another, and you should, if you have read Ian Welsh’s great work in theHistoric Torque be aware that the well-known and respected grandfather of Australian Motorsport Mr. Kev Bartlett has kindly agreed to be our club’s patron and that the Royal Flying Doctor Service (Qld) is the charity nominated for our club’s sponsorship. As for the rest, please keep an eye on club matters, as we will be seeking input from members as we go and as we need. 2020 also saw the HRCC, along with Motorsport Australia, and other car organisations contribute to the Qld Government’s Motor Recreational Activities Inquiry. We are optimistic this inquiry will eventually lead to better outcomes for motorsport in Queensland. Now, as for 2021. We must recognise we are still in uncertain times as we speak, and no doubt covid-19 and government reaction will have an influence on what we do moving forward. Regardless, HRCC members have indicated they would like more events. To hold more events, we need to balance the limited resources our club has, in other words, the time available for committee members to organise more events and what available options we have with venues and officials. However, at this stage we envisage that we will hold, Triple T Day and Sprints in February. Autumn Historic Warwick in May. Historic Queensland in July. Noosa Hillclimb in November (TBA). 2-3 other trackside events – possibly in combination with other events (TBA). Again, we will keep you posted as these develop and as we respond to government regulatory changes. I would again thank members for their support this year. Remember the club is you. 2021 will be an exciting year as the club continues to build upon an already solid foundation. I again am offering to throw my hat in the ring so that I, along with a stable management committee, can further undertake to achieve objectives club members have set. I Thank You All. Alan Steel. HRCCQ Club President.

After a challenging year, much effort was put towards making the night one to remember. Wendy Goulden and Monica Tupicoff and their partners are to be congratulated for putting the ingredients together that made for a fun night for the 85 members and friends that came along. Of course, a good atmosphere at an event such as this comes from a good MC and for the night it was Mike Gehde at his entertaining best with humour that raised good laughs, possibly an eyebrow too.. Great also to have club patron Kevin Bartlett along and playing a big part in the night with award presentations and conversations. A quiz was part of the evening, with questions derived from Kevin’s book “Big Rev Kev”, very informative, fun while producing some good banter.

With minimal racing happening during the year, the committee had made a decision not to allocate racing trophies and awards for 2020. Well except for the Group N Don Thallon Trophy where there were enough events to make it competitive. Instead of the normal racing related awards, a decision was made to recognise the efforts of club members or their partners with Special Service Awards. Recipients received great applause and congratulations from the audience as they were presented with their awards. A list of the awards is shown on page 7. Matt Clift was announced as the winner of the Don Thallon Cup for 2020 however, it was unfortunate that he could not attend to receive the trophy. Following navigation problems finding the venue, Qld ex Rally Champ Bruce studies the route Did someone say prizes? HSRCA Summer Festival - Sports 2000 Report from Mike Gehde

There were 3 cars entered at SMSP & located into Q&R racing/sports. Weather was forecast to be hot and it was. David Stone did some damage through heat, during some very quick times and after the engine cooled down, still appeared to have an issue so he decided to not run in the first race leaving Bruce Taylor and Ron Hay the remaining two S 2000. Both Bruce & Ron said their cars were running on track around boiling point, Ron says he Elected to back off to save destroying his motor. Many competitors did damage or chose to go home after running Saturday. Unfortunately, many of the flaggies were also suffering from the heat which was 41C so they didn’t come Sunday. The HSRCA then had a problem with insufficient marshals so a change of circuit was necessary. They used the “North Circuit “which cuts out going around corporate hill cutting across the back of the pits & re-joining at the hairpin. This seems a pretty quick layout given our guys were circulating around 1.16 secs/lap. Ron chose not to run in the last race, but Bruce did with only 4 competitors.

Find us on: facebook 12 www.hrcc.org.au A GOODBYE NOTE FROM BiLL NORMAN

Sadly I have run my last races in the eastern states. As you can see in the picture, my two remaining racing cars are together on one trailer, ready for the 4250km journey to Perth early next year. The RALT RT4, weighing 475kg, is naturally on the bottom and my homebuilt Gekko hillclimb special, weighing 232kg (sic) is on top. The reason quite simply is the arrival of grandchildren in Perth. As departure approaches I have been forced to the realisation that a quart (in my case a gallon) simply will not fit in a pint pot - hence the clearing sale of raceparts for Torque magazine. This note is mainly a thank you and goodbye to all those friends and competitors; especially those vital, hard working committee members who have made my racing life so enjoyable over the years. This applies to GEAR and the wonderful MG Car Club of Queensland as well as to the HRCCQ. A bunch of narcissistic race drivers like me frankly would never produce a race meeting! I've never met a racetrack I didn't like but Queensland is blessed with Australia's best hillclimb in Mt Cotton and a superb historic track in Lakeside. Both scary in a fast car but wonderful nonetheless. Then there is Morgan Park which never fails to delight and impress, all due to the incredible enthusiasm of the WDSCC. I am looking forward to becoming the Old Man of Barbagello, but there is something irreplaceable about driving on the same track as the 1960s internationals, which you do at Lakeside. Lots of memories...I ran my first race at 17 in a 1955 Standard 10 with crossply tyres, 3.5inch rims and zero horsepower, and won it due to a handicapping mistake. Of course that fooled me into thinking I could drive. The Standard wasn't a great handler but was infinitely better than my next, a supercharged MGTC on methanol which I somehow had road registered and which introduced me to the NSW Highway Patrol. Suffice to say, I was very very lucky to survive those early years with no seatbelts or roll cage. And blissful ignorance of car dynamics... Best wishes to you all, Bill Norman
