‘To be blunt I don’t think many of our guys can honestly look in the mirror after Saturday and feel satisfied with their performance.,

The last 2 games have been hugely disappointing. Football can throw up many highs and lows and previous to our last two games I think it’s safe to say most people at the club had mainly been feeling quite positive about how things were shaping up. Only a fortnight later, we find ourselves sitting on the bus home from Beechwood feeling as if the end of the world was approaching! From an objective point of view, the trip to another Premier league ground was always a tricky draw for this early in the Scottish Cup and there is certainly no shame or embarrassment in losing to Auchinleck Talbot at Beechwood. However, the nature of both defeats is basically what I need to assess.

We produced a sub-par second half performance at New Cumnock despite a loud and clear warning in the dressing room during the half-time break to keep our tempo up and the following week we conceded a goal within the first couple of minutes at Beechwood minutes after leaving the dressing room with the distinct instruction not to allow Talbot the chance to force us on to the back foot early in the game. Our failure to produce the goods in the last couple of weeks has cost the club dearly and as manager, I know that it’s my responsibility to address that! I will assess my own performance and consider if there’s anything I could have done better that could’ve avoided both defeats. Any visiting manager at Beechwood will know it is a ground where you need all your players in the right frame of mind for the task in hand. It is a ground where you can’t afford players either off-form or going into a shell when the going gets tough. We always ask the players to continually look at their own performances with a critical eye but to be blunt I don’t think many of our guys can honestly look in the mirror after Saturday and feel satisfied with their performance.

If there is a positive to be sought from the Talbot game it would only be from our second half performance. It might have been a bit of damage limitation but at least during that second half our players showed enough desire to restore some pride. But the question we all would like to know is why did it take us forty five minutes to produce that bit of fight and determina- tion?It might sound a bit daft but if I was to choose any game for us this week, my first choice would probably have been to play Talbot at Beechwood again, but as that’s not possible my thoughts have been focussed firmly on the visit from a club well known to myself and my backroom team, Arthurlie. We will find a couple of old faces in our visitors ranks (Jimmy McQuade & Stevie Dymock) and I’m sure they will both be keen to put one over on us. From our point of view, we simply have to get back to basics and realise at this level you have to earn the right to play, and I expect that to be a pre-requisite for any player whoever pulls a Clydebank strip over their head!

Onwards & upwards.

Billy McGhie.

Ross Campbell 3 3 1 1 7 1 116 5 121 8 In the two main cup competitions they have started positively. In the West of Scotland Cup they were paired with Port Glasgow Gordon Moffat 1 7 1 2 2 11 2 68 2 70 11 but returned a 3-0 win to go into round two. In the Scottish Cup they were handed a first round bye but had a narrow 2-1 win Ross McPherson 2 2 2 7 5 1 1 2 1 12 2 9 41 29 70 23 over Broxburn last weekend to progress to the third round. Tommy Martin 3 1 1 5 1 2 11 1 1 61 7 68 5 Robert Hamilton 4 7 1 2 14 46 46 Up front for Arthurlie will be a familiar face to Bankies fans as Stevie Dymock makes a return to face his former club. Dymo’s Andy Paterson 4 6 1 2 13 46 46 spell at Clydebank didn’t go as well as it perhaps could have. In three seasons at Holm Park he had fifty nine starts and twen- Vinny Berry 1 6 1 1 8 1 33 33 5 ty eight substitute appearances where the striker managed to score twenty five goals for Bankies. Paul Bell 4 5 1 2 12 32 1 33 There was some recent debate amongst Clydebank fans on the team’s results in 2012. So far the clubs have played thirty Chris Wilson 4 2 6 1 1 1 1 12 1 3 31 2 33 7 games in this calendar year returning a very impressive twenty one wins and three draws with just six defeats for a 70% win Michael MacAdam 2 1 2 2 3 20 12 32 1 rate. The only other year that comes close to this is back in 2004 when the club played a total of forty games winning twenty Ian Gold 2 1 6 1 2 1 1 2 11 2 3 19 10 29 4 seven, drawing five and losing just eight which is 67.5% of games ending in wins. The “annus horribilis” has to be last year as Joe Andrew 2 2 6 1 1 1 2 1 1 2 10 4 5 10 4 14 5 in 2011 the club played thirty six games winning sixteen drawing seven and losing thirteen for a measly 44.4% of winning Ally Graham 4 1 1 5 1 1 6 6 1 6 6 12 1 games and losing 36.1% over those twelve months. It could be argued that this statistic is flawed as one of the draws last year Graeme Smith 11 11 3 was in a net win as Bankies disposed of Yoker in a penalty shoot-out but then again the old saying of statistics, damned statis- tics and lies can be applied as they don’t actually prove anything and are more a piece of fun with numbers. Just out of inter- Dale Clark 1 1 2 2 4 2 4 4 2 est, in total Clydebank have played three hundred and sixty nine games winning a total of one hundred and ninety seven, Ryan Kelly 2 1 1 2 2 2 2 4 drawing sixty eight and losing one hundred and four for a win percentage of 53.3% and a loss percentage at 28.2%. Winning, Michael Morris 2 1 2 1 2 1 3 on average, every second game isn’t at all a bad return. Trialist AR 1 1 1 1 Allan MacPherson 1 1 1 1 Clydebank fans are baffled as to how the last two games have seen the side ship eight goals. In the three games prior to that Scott Walker 1 1 1 1 the defence were magnificent and kept three clean sheets. At New Cumnock in the Scottish Cup tie against Glenafton the Craig McPherson team lost three easily avoidable goals all of which were in the “lucky” category. However there were frailties in the back line that afternoon that became all too apparent at Beechwood Park last weekend where five were conceded in a torrid first half display. It could be argued that Auchinleck Talbot were as good as Clydebank were bad on the day but Bankies gaffer Budgie McGhie will have been working on this with his players during training this week and hopefully the defensive problems will have been rectified. In this division any defensive lapses are severely punished and Talbot strolled to victory in a first half demolition job without having to work too hard to score their goals. In fact many Bankies fans felt that had Talbot been a little more clinical they could have scored even more in that first half. If the defensive problems have not been fixed then players like Stevie Dymock and James Marks, who both scored in the Scottish Cup last week, could profit. 12 CLYDEBANK FC OFFICIAL MATCH PROGRAMME SEASON 2012 / 2013 CLYDEBANK FC OFFICIAL MATCH PROGRAMME SEASON 2012 / 2013 25 West Super Premier News Todays Visitors - Arthurlie

22 CLYDEBANK FC OFFICIAL MATCH PROGRAMME SEASON 2012 / 2013 CLYDEBANK FC OFFICIAL MATCH PROGRAMME SEASON 2012 / 2013 15 Glenaon Athlec v Clydebank 20/10/2012

Injuries forced the Glenafton to replace Richie McKillen with Craig Menzies and captain Paul Murphy with John Paul Boyle. The fresh faces were soon in the thick of the action as the home side’s determination saw them take the ball down the right to the bye -line where Menzies cut the ball across the face of goal for Campbell but he sclaffed his shot high and wide of target. On 50 minutes Hamilton got his fingers to a thunderous free-kick from McEwan to tip the ball over the bar as Glenafton continued to press. Soon after Boyle breached the Bankies box skipping past Martin McInnes to home in own goal but his shot from the narrowest of angles found the side netting. Just after the hour mark Glenafton were back on level terms. Great work by Potter and Menzies down the right touch line ended with the latter firing the ball from the corner to the far side of the box where McKen- zie headed it back into the mix. As both sides fought for the loose ball Ryan Kelly’s attempted clearance was met by the blocking foot of the incoming Craig Potter on the penalty spot and the ball flew into the bottom corner of the net.

Bankies bounced back and quickly forced a corner kick which was won in the air by substitute Ross Campbell only for Semple to plummet to the ground and clutch the loose ball. The keeper then bravely dived at the feet of Andrew after a lightning break down the left by substitute Ally Graham had set up the striker for a sniff at his hat-trick. At the other end a Campbell drive from 20 yards was helped on its way by McKenzie some 10 yards out from goal but Hamilton parried the ball and gathered it safely before Boyle could hunt down the loose ball.

Midway through the half the Clydebank came within a whisker of taking the lead for the third time. Another exquisite pass into the box was met first time by Andrew and his flick at goal was blocked by Semple on the edge of the six yard box who then dived to grab the loose ball only for Graham to kick it goalward from his grasp but Glen Mitchell was on hand to clear it off the line. The ball then fell conveniently into the arms of the grounded keeper, who held it tightly and saw off the hefty challenge from Gold. Semple then held a well struck shot from 20 yards out by Paterson and soon after Ryan McChesney and Mitchell double- teamed to prevent Tommy Martin from testing the keeper after fine play saw him menace his way into the box. With two minutes of regulation play remaining Glenafton got their noses in front for the first time with Menzies again the provider. His quickly taken throw-in from wide on the right was returned by Boyle and the ball instantly whipped over deep into the box where Gold’s attempt to head clear was gathered by Paul McKenzie and then drilled for goal the ball deflecting of the leg of Gold and into the roof of the net. In a frantic finish Boyle released Campbell but Hamilton won the race for the ball rushing to the 18 yard line to block the Glens’ striker. At other end Martin won a corner-kick which was cleared with conviction by McChesney, Mitchell & Co. In the Bankies’ last throw of the die, Gold launched a long throw deep into the box with defender Gordon Moffat the target only for Menzies to get a toe to the ball and his clearance greeted by the final whistle. 16 CLYDEBANK FC OFFICIAL MATCH PROGRAMME SEASON 2012 / 2013 CLYDEBANK FC OFFICIAL MATCH PROGRAMME SEASON 2012 / 2013 21 Glenaon Athlec v Clydebank 20/10/2012

A gutsy Glenafton maintained their 100% cup record over Bankies (albeit three games) despite going behind twice in the brilliant sunshine at Loch Park to the side that had outshone them at Holm Park three weeks ago. Gareth Armstrong returned to the front-line partnering Gareth Campbell up front, while Gus Cochrane came in for the suspended Danny Mitchell. Both sides came out of the blocks in best cup-tie fashion and in the opening minutes keeper Robert Hamilton cut out a dangerous cut-back by Gareth Campbell while at the other end a cracking Chris Wilson drive whistled wide of Ally Semple’s post, taking a nick on the way to win a corner. Panic ensued in the home box when the ball took a wicked bounce from a Wilson shot and foiling Semple but the keeper recovered to make a brave block from Ross Macpherson only for the Bankies to come back for a second and third bite as the home guard struggled to clear their lines. Eventually the breakthrough came when a clever pass by Andy Paterson from the centre circle picked out Joe Andrew, wide on the right and breaking into the busy box, who then drilled the ball low and hard into the far corner of the net, just shy of the five minute mark.

However, within two minutes the home side were on level terms when Paul McKenzie tight on the right-touchline whipped the ball into the goal mouth but it was too near Hamilton to cause any damage, or so it seemed, before the unfortunate keeper let the ball slip from his clutches and fall into the net.

The sides swapped chances as play continued to move from end to end and both keepers came out on top in aerial battles, Semple denying MacPherson and Hamilton fending off Gareth Armstrong. With a quarter of an hour gone Glenafton conjured up their best move when Craig Potter deftly lofted the ball over the Bankies back-line into the box for the overlapping Craig McEwan to gather and then drive for the outskirts of the six yard box before blasting the ball for goal from an acute angle only for it to bulge the side netting. A series of corner of kicks at both ends came and went with neither side able to convert them into a lead. On 20 minutes however the Paterson and Andrew combination put Clydebank ahead for a second time. Paterson pushed his way up the left flank unimpeded before chipping a perfectly placed ball over the heads of the Glens’ defence for the alert Joe Andrew who then killed the ball expertly before rounding the keeper and slamming the ball home.

Four minutes later Armstrong won the ball in the air and his knock down into the box was met by Campbell who fended off the attention of Paterson only for Hamilton to rush from his line and make a fine block. Up the park and the Bankies won a free kick 25 yards out and although Macpherson’s well struck attempt beat the wall it sailed over Semple’s bar. Bankies enjoyed a spell of sustained pressure creating a number of half chances that were mopped up by the home defence; however they could only look on when fine play by Wilson ended with his fierce shot beating Semple at full stretch but whiz wide of the post. End- to-end play resumed but neither side could add to their tally before the break. H/T Glenafton 1 Clydebank 2
