Football can throw up many highs and lows and previous to our last two games I think it’s safe to say most people at the club had mainly been feeling quite positive about how things were shaping up. Only a fortnight later, we find ourselves sitting on the bus home from Beechwood feeling as if the end of the world was approaching! From an objective point of view, the trip to another Premier league ground was always a tricky draw for this early in the Scottish Cup and there is certainly no shame or embarrassment in losing to Auchinleck Talbot at Beechwood. However, the nature of both defeats is basically what I need to assess. We produced a sub-par second half performance at New Cumnock despite a loud and clear warning in the dressing room during the half-time break to keep our tempo up and the following week we conceded a goal within the first couple of minutes at Beechwood minutes after leaving the dressing room with the distinct instruction not to allow Talbot the chance to force us on to the back foot early in the game. Our failure to produce the goods in the last couple of weeks has cost the club dearly and as manager, I know that it’s my responsibility to address that! I will assess my own performance and consider if there’s anything I could have done better that could’ve avoided both defeats. Any visiting manager at Beechwood will know it is a ground where you need all your players in the right frame of mind for the task in hand. It is a ground where you can’t afford players either off-form or going into a shell when the going gets tough. We always ask the players to continually look at their own performances with a critical eye but to be blunt I don’t think many of our guys can honestly look in the mirror after Saturday and feel satisfied with their performance. If there is a positive to be sought from the Talbot game it would only be from our second half performance. It might have been a bit of damage limitation but at least during that second half our players showed enough desire to restore some pride. But the question we all would like to know is why did it take us forty five minutes to produce that bit of fight and determina- tion?It might sound a bit daft but if I was to choose any game for us this week, my first choice would probably have been to play Talbot at Beechwood again, but as that’s not possible my thoughts have been focussed firmly on the visit from a club well known to myself and my backroom team, Arthurlie. We will find a couple of old faces in our visitors ranks (Jimmy McQuade & Stevie Dymock) and I’m sure they will both be keen to put one over on us. From our point of view, we simply have to get back to basics and realise at this level you have to earn the right to play, and I expect that to be a pre-requisite for any player whoever pulls a Clydebank strip over their head! Onwards & upwards. Billy McGhie.
